Look, I’m gonna give it to you straight, the Lemur Motors Bluedriver is the best OBD2 scanner for Mercedes for a couple of reasons, but it’s also the most expensive (compared to other scanners).

Here’s why I recommend this scanner to everyone that asks which diagnostic tool they should choose.

Number 1 – It’s high quality, comes with a warranty, and is manufactured by a legitimate company. Here’s the truth, you can buy some 10-20$ generic ELM327 scanner from Ebay or Amazon and it might work for you… but it’s unlikely to last as long as the Bluedriver, and will probably not read the Mercedes DTC codes that you need to see. The Bluedriver company also has a real website, a support phone number, and a 24/7 support page. This isn’t some repackaged Chinese junk.

Number 2 – It communicates with BOTH iOS/iPhone AND Android devices over BLUETOOTH. If you’ve ever used a WiFi code reader with your iPhone, then you know what a pain in the butt they are to disconnect from your home WiFi, and connect to the OBD2 WiFi. Your cheaper scanners usually only use WiFi connection, but the Bluedriver has done the extensive leg work to use certified bluetooth connectivity for iOS and Android.

Number 3 – Alright this is the third and final case for this scanner being the best bluetooth OBD2 scanner for Mercedes and it’s the app that Lemur Motors includes. Almost all other scanner require you to purchase an Android/iPhone app like Torque Pro or OBD Fusion to use the code reader with your phone and these cost from 10-25$ bucks. The 427201 OBDLink LX starts around 50 bucks, making it one of the most affordable scanner for the features. This product works flawlessly on Ford, Chrysler, GM and Chevrolet vehicles. Real-world use of the 427201 OBDLink LX (and the rest of our scanners)

Our test car was a 2012 Ford Focus Titanium with a 2.0-liter DURATEC engine and 5-speed manual. We plugged in the 427201 OBDLink LX OBD2 scanner to the diagnostic port and fired up our Android phone. The scanner immediately displayed 3 fault codes, and were able to determine the meaning of the codes from the V1.5 database.

Our test car was really ill. First, it had a PO302 error code, which was a misfire on cylinder #2. Next, the code PO400 was diagnosed, which had something to do with the EGR or exhaust gas recirculation system. Finally, the Focus also had a P1100 error code, which meant that there was a problem with the MAF or mass airflow sensor. No wonder the Focus was idling erratically, and the owner of the car also reported acceleration problems and poor MPG.

Now that the mechanic knows what’s wrong with our test car, we proceeded to test our other OBD2 scanners for the Ford Focus. The Veepeak Mini OBDII Scanner is one of the cheapest diagnostic tools that we found. But don’t let the price fool you. This scanner is compatible with Apple/iOS and Android phones because it uses WiFi to connect to your phone. We love these small scanners. They are convenient and easily used to convert your smartphone to an invaluable vehicle repair tool!

We plugged it in and fired up on Eddie’s iPhone 7s. The Veepeak Mini Scanner was able to read all the error codes that we diagnosed earlier. Our test car was now idling more erratically, and it even refused to start when the engine died. We started the car again and proceeded to read the error codes for a second time. TheVeepeak Mini OBD2 scanner simply works, and it is designed to be compatible to all OBD2 protocols including CAN-BUS. Make sure that you get the right app for your phone. For Android we suggest Torque (or Torque Pro). For Apple, Eddie has used BlueDriver (free) and Dash Command (paid). Try out the free apps, they might be enough for you. The paid apps do offer a lot more features and car information like manufacture specific codes… but we don’t want to get too off track on that!

Eddie’s mechanic began to remove the air cleaner box and the MAF sensor. He sprayed some cleaner into the MAF sensor to somehow fix the idling problem. It worked for a while, but the idling problem was back when we were in the middle of testing our third OBD2 scanner for the Ford Focus.

This Foseal OBD 2 scanner supports all Ford vehicles manufactured in the USA after 1998. It utilizes the latest ELM processor for improved speed and performance. It also works via Wifi, supports Android and iOS and it costs less than 20 bucks. This scanner will also work on Ford diesel and Benzine cars.

The device worked well on our test car, and it was able to read the trouble codes from the MAF sensor, the EGR, and the cylinder misfire from the database of over 3,000 generic and manufacturer-specific trouble codes.

As we previously mentioned earlier, our test car was really struggling during this time of the test. The unstable idling required us to start the car again at least 10 times when the engine died, and the garage was now beginning to smell like unburned fuel. We needed to hurry, as Eddie’s mechanic was not itching to go back to work and solve the problems once and for all.

Conclusion

Our test car was in really bad shape, but it was the perfect candidate to test the 4 best OBD2 scanners for the Ford Focus. Eddie’s mechanic wanted to get back to work.. but not before requesting that we leave him the Big Banana so he can test it on his Ford F-150. As it turns out, even seasoned mechanics need all the help they can get.

This device will work on VW, Audi, Seat and Skoda vehicles. It can read and erase diagnostic trouble codes (DTC) of the engine, automatic transmission, ABS brakes and SRS airbags. This VW OBD2 scanner might be low-priced, but it doesn’t skimp on features.

We love that the U281 OBD2 CAN Auto Scanner has an easy to read backlit 2-DIN LCD display. Sure, a four-liner full graphic display is much preferred, but we’re not talking about mobile phones here. For the price, the display is okay, but it is nothing to write home about. If you previously thought that wireless OBD2 scanners are expensive, then you better think again. This code reader will also work on Android, Windows,  Apple and iOS devices. This tool can also display current sensor data including intake manifold pressure, mass air flow, fuel level barometric pressure and air intake temperature.

The Foseal OBD2 Diagnostics Scanner Tool for VW will work on all Volkswagens manufactured from 2002 to 2016. It works via Wi-Fi, so it connects to your phone or tablet via wireless. You will have to install an app on your phone. We used OBD2 Car Doctor for iPhone and Torque for Android

We personally tried the MAXSCAN VAG409.1 on Patrick’s VW Golf MK4, and it worked fine. It was able to reset the oil service light and retrieve the VIN number of the Golf.

Amazon reviews are very mixed for this VW OBD2 reader. However,  if you’re not scared to get a little “techy” it’s not too hard to get working. Here’s how we got the Maxscan VA409.1 working on our Golf MK4.

1. Grab a cup of coffee.
2. Install the CH341SER Driver on your WINDOWS Computer. This was the hardest to find, but we eventually found it on a Chinese site. Here’s the link: http://www.wch.cn/download/CH341SER_EXE.html
3. Install VCDS-Lite on your WINDOWS computer. Here’s the link: http://www.ross-tech.com/vcds-lite/download/index.php
4. You should now be able to connect your VAG409.1 to your computer and update it.

For the price, the MaxScan VAG409 is compatible with ISO9141 and KWP2000 protocols, which are used by Volkswagen, Audi, skoda, seat. If you don’t mind some extra leg work, it’s a great code reader for your Volkswagen. Please be sure to read the compatible vehicle list to make sure your car is compatible because it does not support VPW, PWM or CAN-bus protocols.

It can also read and erase generic trouble codes for VW models using ISO 9141-2 (CARB), ISO 14230 (KWP2000) and ISO-15765 (CAN) protocols. Whether you have an old or new VW, the VS450 OBD2 Auto Scanner and Code Reader will do the dirty job for you.

The cost is a lot of money to spend if you’re a novice enthusiast. However, you ultimately get what you pay for, because this baby is feature-packed compared to other cheap OBD-2 scanners.

I thought this guide would be helpful for those of you who own Hondas and don’t mind crawling under the hood once in a while to get your hands dirty. The Foseal OBD2 Scanner is a very affordable option. If you’re pinching pennies to save up for that new turbo charger, this just might be the best OBDII scan tool for your Honda.

Coming in at less that $$ at the time of this article, the Foseal is one of the cheapest OBD2 scanners that you can buy. But don’t think that means this code reader is inferior. Oh no! This device supports all Honda vehicles, and it can do more than just read those bothersome trouble codes.

We tested the Foseal on Jeff’s modified Civic, and the scanner was able to point out that the throttle sensor is defective. We were scratching our heads since we sourced that particular throttle body from a salvage yard, and we forgot to check the throttle sensor before installing the throttle body. Thankfully, the Foseal was able to read the trouble code (DTC) in virtually seconds.

I tested it using an iPhone, and believe me, it’s pretty rare to find an OBD2 scanner that supports IOS… and without any weird bugs. I opted to fork out the $10 for Dash Command because I love the extra features of Dash Command for the IOS. You can also use OBD Car Doctor if you’re cheap 🙂 My buddy Vince had a Samsung (S5 I think?) and we connected the Samsung with the Foseal scanner with no issues. The Autel MaxiScan MS300 Scan Tool will work on all Honda vehicles from 1996, including newer models that use CAN-BUS protocol. Using this device, we were able to read and clear generic and manufacturer specific trouble codes, and turn off the annoying check engine light on Roman’s stock Civic.

Next, we tried if this device can retrieve the VIN, but we found out that this feature only works on 2002 and newer Honda cars (Roman’s Civic is a 2001 model). We used tested it out on Jeff’s 1996 civic, and sure enough, the ABS code popped right up! Not keep in mind, if you’re going to use this scanner for ABS, please see the List of Supported Vehicles – It should work on nearly any Honda, but just double check! We don’t want you to buy a scanner that doesn’t help yu get the job done

On top of ABS/SRS support, it will read, diagnose and erase diagnostic trouble codes on your Honda and Acura. It automatically refreshes data every 30 seconds, so you can view the status of your engine sensors. We mainly used this feature to observe the data readings on Jeff’s modified Civic, and it worked beautifully.
The INNOVA 3150 might be pricey for some. But we included it on our Top 5 list because it’s got some awesome features that are not found in the cheaper scan tools.  As an added bonus, we were able to retrieve the VIN, CIN and CVN of our 1996 Honda Civic vehicle using this device. Two thumbs up!

Dealing with Check Engine Lights in your Honda

Check Engine Lights are placed in cars to warn owners that there is something wrong with the engine. It can mean a multitude of different things and is primarily there to warn you to get the engine looked at. It has been part of standard automobiles since the 1980s and is central to their diagnostics systems. As computers continue to become an integral part of every automobile, the check engine lights will grow more complex and will monitor intricate details that point to problems within the engine.

Why is the Check Engine Light on in my Honda?

If the Check Engine light in your Honda turns on, there are a few things that you’ll need to check. There are standard things like the quantity of fuel in the tank (is it dangerously low or is it overfilled?), any other warning lights going on etc. And then there are some subtle things that you need to think about such as excessive humidity in your car, the installation of any new electronic devices. If you have let someone else drive your car recently, or have taken it in to the shop, the problems may lie there too.

All of these questions may hold the answers to your check engine light. If there’s excessive humidity, there may be a leak in your car, if another light has turned on, there might be an engine problem related to that part of the car, if a new device has been installed in the car, it may be interfering with the car’s central system, etc.

Important Distinctions to Make

It’s important not to panic, whatever the situation may be. And you shouldn’t confuse the check engine light with the maintenance reminder that is on your dashboard.

It’s also important to notice whether the light is just on, or if it’s flashing. If it’s the latter, there may be a serious problem with your car, and it’s important to call a mechanic or a tow truck to get your car to the shop.

Resetting a Check Engine Light in a Honda

There are a few ways you can do this, but the most direct way is to use an OBD2 scanner (see above for our favorite choices). You should connect the scanner to the Onboard Diagnostic Connector under the steering column. Then turn the ignition ON and the scanner should boot right up.

Next, press the READ button on the scanner to see the error codes from the engine. It’s better to get a pen and paper to write down the codes rather than remembering them in the order they were received. This will help with future repairs.

Then press the ERASE button to remove the error code. The Check Engine Light should automatically turn off if the codes are all cleared.

Some scanners may have a CLEAR or YES button instead of an ERASE button. Go along with the instructions as you see them, and be wary of the process. Don’t forget to turn the ignition on before your erase the codes.

By following these simple instructions, your Honda is going to stay in optimum condition. Even if you are not able to solve the issue, it’s better to know exactly what might be wrong with the car.

Final Thoughts

When the check engine light of your Honda turns ON, you can do 2 things: rush to your mechanic, or grab your own OBD2 scanner and save money. We have to admit that we don’t know very much about Volvo cars. Not that we don’t love the look of a 1975 Volvo Turbo 242! But mainly because Volvo’s are not very common cars. Most younger people seem to prefer to drive Corollas and Civics. Volvo makes a fantastic, safe, and reliable car, but this also comes at a higher price tag.

Luckily for us, our good friend Eddie came to the rescue. His mom drives a 2006 Volvo S60, while his girlfriend just bought a 2008 Volvo V70. Eddie was complaining about a pesky check engine light on the S60, so we proceeded with our test.

If you’re looking for the best Bluetooth OBD2 scanner for Volvo, then look no further than the Bluedriver! We’ve only recently stumbled across this wireless diagnostic scanner and let me tell you, it’s a beast!

When we got our hands on the iCarsoft i906 OBD2 Scanner, Andy was surprised that the device was less than $$$. Why? It felt pretty good to the touch, and the entire thing feels like it was screwed together by a professional engineer. It also helps that the iCarsoft i906 had an impressive TFT full-color screen. The package was pretty impressive, but it’s time to put it to the test.

We fired up the S60 and plugged in the iCarsoft i906 to the OBD2 diagnostics port. The device was able to diagnose the ABS and SRS error code of the Volvo, but Eddie was perplexed. The car didn’t have a problem with the airbags or braking system, but he did remember upgrading the stereo a couple of weeks ago.

We went online and found out that Volvos are notorious for this kind of error code, especially if you tinker with any part of the vehicle’s electrical system.

It’s a good thing we had the iCarsoft i906 OBD2 scanner to play with. It was able to read, diagnose and clear the SRS and ABS diagnostic trouble codes, and we were able to view live data in real-time.

This is not the cheapest Volvo OBD2 scanner here, but it certainly worked the first time around.

German or European vehicles are not exactly the cheapest to service or maintain, so it only makes sense to invest on a quality OBD2 scanner for your Euro car. The Ancel AD310 is middle priced and scans and clears DTCs. It comes with a 3 year warranty, and is a popular scanner. However, one of it’s downfalls is that it doesn’t read/clear ABS and SRS codes. So if you need that functionality, you’ll check out one of our other OBD2 scanners for Volvo.

This device is known as the fastest full color Volvo OBD2 scanner and other European brand cars. We didn’t exactly use a stop watch to verify the speed of this device, but it quickly diagnosed the O2 sensor error code of our S60 test car.

I’m gonna be honest with you, I’m not sure what the difference is between the Autophix ES610 and Ancel AD310. They look identical and have similar features. The Ancel is quite a bit cheaper. With that said, the Autophix ES610 Professional Volvo Scan Tool is one of our favorite corded Volvo OBD2 scanners. It’s not the cheapest OBD2 scanner by a long margin. But this device provides quick access to all Volvo control systems including the engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, HVAC, etc.

The Autophix ES610 can also display detail definitions of all Volvo trouble codes. It can also retrieve vehicle information such as the VIN, CIN and CVN. We tested this on both our Volvo test cars and the results were conclusive. Our Volvo V70 had an ABS and SRS error code similar to the S60, and the Autophix ES6110 was able to point out the O2 sensor problem of our V70 as well.

We’ve saved the best fault code reader for Volvo for last! If you’ve tried other scanners and found them lacking, you’ve gotta get your hands on the Autel MD802. This tool will set you back, but it’s the last OBDII scanner you’ll ever need to buy for your Volvo.

The Autel MD802 OBD2 Code Scanner has global support coverage. Most OBD tools will only support domestic vehicles like Ford, Chevy, etc, and just display generic codes for the rest. Not the Md802! This tool is specifically designed to work on US, Asian, and European cars! Please keep in mind that you might need to purchase the 38 pin Mercedes adapter, 20pin BMW adapter, etc. From the factory, it only includes the OBD2 plug.

While this is definitely not the cheapest scan tool available, it’s one of the best that you can buy for European cars. If you’re on a tight budget and you want to diagnose the check engine light on your Volvo, we highly recommend the Kitbest OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner. This code reader clocks in at around $$ bucks, making it the cheapest OBD2 scanners for Volve. This scanner will also work on other European brands such as BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, Jaguar and Porsche. We wish we could try this scanner on a Porsche or Jag, but we will focus on our Volvo test cars for the meantime.

Strangely enough, our Volvo V70 test car had the same SRS and ABS error as the S60. Eddie wasn’t exactly thrilled, because they just purchased this car about a week ago. We connected the Kitbest Scanner to the OBD2 port, and found out that the code was a P0135 (faulty O2 sensor) DTC code. After some troubleshooting, we found that the O2 sensor wasn’t getting power due to a short in the harness. Looks like the shielding had rubbed away (or maybe chewed?) and we just wrapped it in electrical tape. I know, I know, not the best fix, but we’ll fix the harness correctly when we get time 🙂

While the mood was quite sour, we were sure glad that the Kitbest was able to retrieve all the error codes on our V70 test car. Eddie is going to bring his girlfriend’s V70 to the nearest garage for a thorough inspection on Monday.

The Kitbest OBD2 Scanner works on all OBDII protocols including CAN-BUS, and comes with a 5-year warranty. The only thing we didn’t like about it was you can only connect it to your Android phone. No iPhone connectivity is available.

We spend a lot of money on car maintenance and repair, so it makes sense to choose an OBD2 scanner that is easy on the pocket. The Foseal WiFi OBDII Diagnostic Scanner is a great low price, and it works via Wifi. No more wires, no more fuss. This is one of our favorite OBD2 scanners because it’s one of the only code readers that works with Apple iOS AND Android (and Windows…). It’s always a toss up around here between the BAFX 34T5 vs Foseal wifi. We haven’t been able to decide which one is the best because they both have awesome features. However, for this list of Nissan OBD2 scanners, we decided to rank the BAFX just under the FoSeal simply because it doesn’t supports iOS and costs slightly more… If don’t care about iPhone support and want a code reader that has a 2 year warranty and guaranteed vehicle support, the BAFX is a great option! 

We love Bluetooth scanners, because we like scanning without using wires. Robert’s Nissan Maxima was having acceleration issues, so we hooked up the BAFX 34t5 OBD2 Scanner to determine the cause of the issue. Mind you, there was no check engine light on the dash, but Robert insisted that there are times when the check engine light will remain on, and turn off after a while.

As it turns out, the Maxima had a faulty throttle sensor. After further investigation, we were able to deduce that Robert didn’t do a very good job of cleaning the throttle body. We simply purchased a can of throttle-body cleaner, removed the throttle body, and cleaned the entire part with the spray.

We know that the BAFX 34t5 OBD2 can scan, read, diagnosis and erase trouble codes, but it also saved us a lot of money and headaches in the process. The best part? The device cost just over (Click for price on Amazon).

4. The Hikeren mini

If your Japanese car has a 16-pin connector and is OBD2 compliant, then the Hikeren OBD2 Diagnostic Scanner is perfect for you. We fired up our test Altima, and we plugged-in the V1.5 to the diagnostic port. The device was able to detect the fault immediately, even though our smartphone was running out of power.
We juiced up our device and we gave it another go. This is not only a Bluetooth code reader, but like other wireless scanners, it can also display current sensor data. We were amazed that this scanner is actually cheaper than the pair we previously tested above, but it works quite as well. It seems we were having a good day.

The Hikeren is 10 bucks cheaper than the BAFX and FoSeal, but we ranked the Hikeren just below the BAFX and FoSeal just because the quality control for this unit is hit or miss. Vince picked one up last month that wouldn’t pair with his phone. Even though Hikeren was quick to replace the module with a working, it’s something to be aware of.

Robert and I were wondering why wired OBD2 scanners are more expensive than wireless or Bluetooth scanners. Is it the added material? Do wires really cost that much? We have no idea, and we’re not saying that the Autel 319 is outrageously expensive. In fact, this device is still relatively cheap, and we would gladly pay $30 for a good OBD2 scanner.

This is my guide to choosing the right OBD2 scanner for Ford vehicles. If you happen to have a Ford, and you want to get rid of that check engine light on your console, you need to have your own scanner so you can read, diagnose, and erase those Ford OBD2 trouble codes. If you’re looking for a tool to pull obd2 codes for Ford, then you’re in the right place!

We’ve said it many times before on ScannerAnswers: getting your own OBD2 scan tool is one of the most economical ways to fix your car. Of course, there is always the option of going to the dealership, but money is tight nowadays. Nobody wants to spend thousands of dollars on car repair!

My test subjects (Ford Flex and Explorer)

I’m a big fan of fast Fords. The Focus ST is still one of the best handling sporty compacts that money can buy, and the Ford F-150 is still the definitive pickup truck with car-like levels of refinement. Vince still hasn’t come around and loves Chevy’s, so he get’s to spend more time testing OBDII scanners while he’s fixing his truck 🙂

Sadly, I don’t yet own a Ford Focus ST for this review, but I made due with a 2014 Ford Flex SUV. This family car is equipped with a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 287 horsepower and around 254 pound-feet of torque. This baby purrs when the engine is healthy, but our test SUV had trouble accelerating, and the engine vibrates erratically when idling.

How I wish I had a Mustang to play with, but I had to make do with a 2011 Ford Explorer with the same 3.5-liter V6 engine as our Flex test unit. This SUV still looks good even after all these years, but there are times when the engine refuses to start, and there’s a check engine light on the dash.

Okay, I think it’s time to get down and dirty with our choice of the best OBD2 scanners for Ford.

The Veepeak Mini WiFi Code Reader is next on our list. We love wireless OBD2 scanners because they are easy on the pocket. This particular code reader is less than a tank of gas (find it on Amazon), but it can do a lot of troubleshooting for the price!

This device supports all five OBD2 protocols including CAN-BUS, although the company admits that it may not support hybrid or full-electric vehicles. It can also read real-time engine sensor data using only your iPhone, iPad, or Android smartphone.
Thankfully, our Explorer test unit is not a hybrid, and so is our Ford Flex. We hooked this baby up, fired up our iPad and opened the OBD Car Doctor app. True to form, the Veepeak Mini WiFi was able to read the mass air flow sensor error code. If you use this adapter with your Android smartphone or tablet you’ll want to use the Torque app. Try out the free app before investing in the paid one 🙂

We initially had some trouble when we tested this OBD2 scanner on our 2014 Ford Flex. We disconnected the device and hooked it up again. The Veepeak Mini WiFi was able to read both the cam sensor and the ignition circuit trouble codes.

2. Innova 3100 Corded Scan Tool

The Innova 3100i is the only scan tool in this test that has a colored LCD screen. It is also the most expensive in this test, but we weren’t bothered at all. Just look at it! The brilliant screen and the professional-looking interface is worth the money alone. This device wouldn’t look out of place inside a plush garage or service center.

The Innova 3100i is designed to quickly and easily read and erase engine trouble codes for GM, Ford, Chrysler, and Toyota vehicles. In fact, this scan tool can also read ABS (anti-lock braking system) trouble codes, and it can also perform diagnostic tests on the battery and alternator to check the performance of these vital electrical parts.
After hooking this up to our Ford Explorer test car, the Innova 3100i took no time at all to read and diagnose the faulty mass air flow sensor. As an added bonus, the freeze-frame data feature of this OBD2 scan tool enabled us to determine the engine coolant temperature and the fuel trim of the motor when the error code popped up.

The Ford Flex was next. By this time, our test unit was really struggling. The engine was vibrating so hard, and the tailpipe was spewing unburnt fuel like a hardcore dragster. Thankfully, the Innova 3100i was able to read the P1364 error code, including the cam sensor error code.

Since the Innova 3100i has a battery/alternator test feature, we decided to test the battery and the alternator of our Ford Flex before wrapping up. The voltage of the battery was less than 12 volts, which meant that this SUV will also need a new battery pretty soon.

3. Big Banana Scanna

The Big Banana is one of our favorites simply because it works. Although it’s not the cheapest OBD2 scanner in the market, it is one of the easiest to use. The minimalist appearance of this Ford OBDII scan tool is a god-send for those who don’t know much about cars, let alone scanning Ford OBD2 trouble codes.

I grabbed my buddy Vince and we hooked this up to our ailing Ford Flex, and it took less than a minute to diagnose the trouble code. As it turns out, the Flex had an ignition coil primary circuit fault, represented by the code P1364. That was easy.

But that wasn’t the only thing wrong with the car. The Big Banana BB600 was able to detect a faulty cam sensor as well.

The Explorer was next. We hooked up the Big Banana BB600 so we can read the fault code. It turns out that there’s something terribly wrong with the mass air flow sensor. No wonder the engine refused to start!

Like we said, the Big Banana BB600 gets the job done with minimal fuss. This baby is compatible with all 1996 and newer vehicles, even those that utilize CAN protocol.

At ScannerAnswers, the guys and I love wireless OBDII scanners. Today I’m gonna show you the best obd2 scanner for chevy and choosing a GM obd2 scan tool. Chevrolet and GM are pretty much the same company, so you’ll see me use them interchangeably 🙂

These nifty scan tools may look like ordinary flash drives (albeit a bit bigger than usual), but they are powerful enough to scan, read, diagnose, and erase those pesky trouble codes! And the best part is that you can basically use your smartphone or tablet for the job. So anytime that MIL flashes, grab your OBDII scanner, roll up your sleeves, and start fixing your own vehicle.

How we acquired some test Chevy’s and GMs

Matt and I decided to review the best and most affordable wireless OBD2 scanners for GM vehicles. My neighbor just bought a used 2013 Chevrolet Sonic LTZ, but he was complaining about intermittent black smoke coming from the exhaust.

The Sonic also has an overheating problem, and there is a check engine light on the dash. Knowing that I work and cars and love reviewing OBD2 scan tools, my neighbor was kind enough to let me test our wireless OBDII scanners on his Chevy.

He said that if I can diagnose the problem, then I might save him a trip to the dealership, and save him a couple hundred dollars as well.

I contacted Matt and told him the story about the ailing Sonic. I asked if he had another GM vehicle that we can test, and he said that his cousin had a problematic 2014 GMC Acadia. The only trouble is that we would have to travel 60 miles to see the car.

The Verdict (a GMC Acadia and Chevy Sonic)

Everything is set. After a day of testing wireless OBDII adapters, we were quite happy with the results. We used 7 wireless scanners for each test, but here are the 3 that stood out in terms of performance and price.

The BAFX 34t5 Bluetooth is designed to work on Android and Windows devices only. Not exactly a big deal, because Matt brought along his Android tablet for this test. He also installed and purchased the DASH COMMAND app because we always use his trusted tablet in testing wireless OBD2 scanners for Android.

We hooked up the BAFX to the Chevy Sonic’s OBD2 port. We initially had some problems syncing the scan tool to our tablet, but we removed the device from the port and decided to do it again.

In less than a minute, the BAFX 34t5 was able to read the engine coolant sensor trouble codes. Matt accidentally erased the trouble codes because he was fiddling with the app, and we still had to test a few more OBDII adapters on the Chevy.

Bottom Line: The Bafx is an affordable Chevy OBDII adapter that gets the job done!

We started the car, let the turbo engine warm up for a couple of seconds, and waited for the check engine light to reappear on the console. After 1 minute, the check engine light was back! Matt heaved a sigh of relief.

When we proceeded to test the 34t5 Bluetooth on our GMC Acadia test car, I reminded Matt NOT to erase the trouble code. So when the scan tool was able to diagnose the faulty MAP sensor on the Acadia, I grabbed the tablet from Matt so he won’t make the same mistake again.

For less than an oil change, we were quite impressed with the Veepeak Mini WiFi. This small wonder is compatible with all 55 OBDII protocols, so you can use it on your car, truck, or SUV, whether it’s domestic, European, or Japanese.

The best part is that this nifty device will work on both Android and Apple devices. We first tested the Chevy Sonic LTZ, which is one of our favorite subcompact cars because of the 1.4-liter turbocharged motor.

This particular Sonic looks fresh from the inside and the outside, but we did notice that the vehicle had some starting problems, and there was black smoke coming from the exhaust. Yes, there was a check engine light on the dash, and my neighbor had some doubts that the Veepeak Mini WiFi will be able to diagnose the problem.

Sure enough, it did. We hooked it up to the OBD2 port and fired up our iPhone with the OBD Car Doctor app. In less than 4 seconds, we found two trouble codes: P1111 and P1112. We found out that there was something wrong with the engine coolant temperature sensor.
My neighbor was ecstatic! He couldn’t believe that a device that cost only $(see price) was able to diagnose the fault. Now, he only needs a new engine coolant sensor and his turbo engine will be back in tiptop shape!

Bottom Line: The Veepeak is a great iPhone and Android OBDII adapter that pairs perfectly with your GM or Chevy vehicle and can save you hundreds or thousands from the “stealership”

We proceeded to test the 2014 GMC Acadia. This SUV is similar to the Chevrolet Traverse and the Buick Enclave. Our test unit is equipped with a 3.6-liter gasoline V6 engine with a 6-speed automatic transmission.

However, this Acadia has engine stalling problems, particularly after starting the car. The engine also has a tendency to drag or hesitate while idling. We hooked up the Veepeak Mini WiFi to diagnose the problem.

True to form, the device was able to read the P1107 trouble code, which means the MAP sensor needed replacement. We decided to check it again, and the same trouble code popped up. This means that Vince’s cousin doesn’t have to spend an entire week’s worth of wages to get his car back on the road.

The Foseal is one of the most popular scan tools around, and for good reason! It’s compatible with Android and iPhone because it uses the WiFi protocol (Apple blocks “untrusted” Bluetooth devices). We grabbed Matt’s dependable Android tablet for this test and fired up our favorite app, Torque

First up is my neighbor’s Sonic LTZ. We already knew that this small car had problems with the engine coolant temperature sensor, but we just needed to confirm the diagnosis using the Foseal adapter.

We weren’t disappointed at all. This wireless scan tool was able to accurately detect the Chevy trouble code P1111 and P1112, although the latter showed up during our second take.
When we tested the Foseal on our GMC Acadia, it was already getting dark. Vince’s cousin promised to take us out to dinner, and were hungry after a whole afternoon of testing wireless scan tools.

Conclusion
