Other odd findings – There are some problems with the software like if the phone is at sleep mode, the data readings will vanish and there is nothing one can do. Another limitation is that the live data are not saved in the BlueDriver sensor or even in the app itself. So the moment the engine is turned off the live data readings will get erased and you cannot restore them as they are not saved in the app or sensor which is a huge problem to consider as sometimes important details can be missed out.

I’m always excited when trying new OBD2 scanners. I don’t know about you, but the fact that a small and compact wireless device capable of ‘reading’ the CPU in my vehicle still blows my mind. I’m an old-school kind of guy, and I still love to tinker with carburetor-equipped muscle cars. But times have indeed changed. Back in the not so olden days, you need to rush to the dealership and pay hundreds of dollars to diagnose the check engine light in your dash.

Well, not anymore. We now live in the age of smartphones and practical wireless devices. I got my hands on the No products found., and I’m finding it hard to wipe the smile off my face. Why? It’s because there is something about this OBDII scan tool that makes it stand out from the rest of the scanners that I’ve tested so far: this little baby is backed by a lifetime warranty.

Think about that for a moment. I’m holding in my hand a compact and Bluetooth-powered OBD2 adapter that comes with a hassle-free return option. What made this moment a bit more exciting is the fact that I can try this nifty device in my cousin Walter’s 2007 Toyota Camry. His car has a bit of black smoke emanating from the exhaust. It also idles roughly even if the engine is hot. Of course, accompanying these symptoms is the annoying presence of a check engine light on the dash.

In order to make things more interesting, Walter convinced me to test the Ozzy Gear OBD II Bluetooth Scanner in my own car, which happens to be a beat-up Mitsubishi Evolution VI. But there’s a problem: my car is running fine. Sure, it’s not the hyped-up rally machine that it used to be, but there is no check engine light on my ride. So we did the next best thing. I deliberately loosened the two screws that hold the throttle position sensor (TPS) at the right angle, I turned the TPS downwards, and presto! We have a check engine light on the dash.

Now, we’re ready to explore the capabilities of the Ozzy Gear OBD II Bluetooth Scanner.

This nifty scan tool will work on Android smartphones, tablets, and Windows PC/laptops. All you need is to download a third party OBD2 app from the Google Play Store (we’re using Torque Pro), plug in the Ozzy Gear into the OBD2 diagnostics port, pair your device with the Ozzy Gear Scanner, and you’re good to go!

Compatible with all OBD2 Protocols

The Ozzy Gear OBD2 Scan Tool is compatible with all OBD2 protocols including CAN-BUS. This device is designed to work on all 1996 and newer vehicles sold in the USA. However, this OBD2 scanner will not work on hybrid or electric vehicles.

To be fair, almost all wireless OBD2 scanners have the same compatibility feature. This is not a problem if you’re going to use the scan tool on 1 or 2 cars in your household. However, the same can’t be said if you’re a mechanic who works with a variety of old and new cars. But since the Ozzy Gear OBD2 Scanner is compatible with all OBD2 protocols, even professional mechanics will have no problems using this scan tool.

Remember that even though all vehicles manufactured since 1996 are OBD-II compliant, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they use the same OBD2 protocol.

Clears Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Reads the Cause of the Check Engine Light

Now comes the fun part. I plugged the Ozzy Gear into the OBD2 port of Walter’s Camry, turned it on, and paired it with his Android phone. In less than 30 seconds, the Ozzy Gear was able to determine the cause of the check engine light on the dash. It was a faulty engine coolant temperature sensor. It displayed the trouble code P0115. Walter thought that his Camry needed an engine overhaul because there was thick, black smoke every time he steps on the gas. What a relief!

Visibly impressed, he insisted that we test the Ozzy Gear in my Mitsubishi. Remember that I deliberately tinkered with the TPS until the check engine light was lit on the dash. I plugged it in and the Ozzy Gear OBD2 scanner was able to detect the faulty TPS. The trouble code P0111 and P0112 were displayed in Walter’s phone. It only took 10 seconds.

I’ve encountered OBD2 Bluetooth scanners that won’t work on turbocharged vehicles, but the Ozzy Gear worked like a charm.

3. OBDLink – This app is specially designed for Android only, and it offers real-time graphing, fuel economy and turbo boost pressure. You can also verify emissions and overall fuel consumption. The app itself is now more user friendly, and is consistently being updated to provide smoother operation and a more user-friendly dashboard.
4. OBD eZWAY – Designed exclusively for Android scanners, this app offers premium GPS tracking and air-fuel ratio monitoring. But what sets it apart is that eZWay will create your car’s personal home page so you can monitor family trip statistics, daily ratings of who’s driving the car and fuel cost control.

The verdict is basically the same:

all of those apps are great, and there are free apps that you can use. But if you need something that will not only monitor your fuel consumption or emissions, then you should get a paid version of your preferred OBD2 app. After all, they only cost a couple of dollars.

We should also mention that some OBD apps will work better if you use an app-specific OBD2 scan tool (like the Bluedriver), but a large majority of Android scan tools are designed to interact pretty well with any third-party app.

This OBD2 scanner has all the features you could want, but here’s a couple of my favorite:

• Switch off the engine and check the engine light which functions aren’t available in many conventional scan tools sold in the market today. Quite impressive functionality for this small-sized device.
•  Compatibility with many OBDII compliant vehicles. We haven’t found any vehicles that this scanner does not work on.

• The device is suitable to read diagnostic problems codes (or DTCs), simultaneously generic or manufacturer-specific, plus can present their meanings.

• Not recommended for Macintosh computer systems
• Support only Android smartphone.. No support for IOS and iPhones
• The product uses Bluetooth technology exclusively
• The included software is not the best and should be replaced with Torque

The BAFX products 34t5 Bluetooth OBDII scan tool is not able to perform some more advanced functions including turbo tuning or timing advance. Also, Apple iPhone users are out of luck because this scanner will not work with Apple devices. In spite of the small disadvantages, I was impressed by the BAFX products 34t5. If you have a check engine light on and want to make sure it’s nothing major, then this OBD2 scanner is a lifesaver. Being able to read codes, clear errors, and get diagnostics for your car will pay for the scanner over and over.

This thing also is very small, so it’s conveniant to just leave it plugged into the car!

 Things I did not like: 

One of the biggest drawbacks that we found was that this device is NOT compatible with Apple or iOS devices. This is not OBDLink’s fault thought, it’s because Apple doesn’t support Bluetooth sharing or connectivity with non-Apple devices. This is a minor annoyance, but the good news is that you can buy the OBDLink MX Wi-Fi which is designed to work with Apple or Mac computers.

One other thing that I’ve heard some friends mention is that sometimes the OBDLink doesn’t return all the SRS codes… I did not have that issue, but if you run into a similar issue where the scanner doesn’t provide a description for the code, just look it up here: https://actron.com/code-lookup

OBD Car Doctor offers a free OBD-2 app with limited features. But paying $3.99 for the OBD Car Doctor PRO app will unlock all the features such as a fuel economy statistic screen, real-time recording of engine parameters, GPS support, and much more.

OBD Car Doctor will scan, read, diagnose, and erase diagnostic trouble codes. However, if your vehicle is running multiple CPUs, the data reading may become unstable. We talked to PNN Soft about this problem, and they told us that this feature will upgraded soon.

The FREE version OBD Car Doctor is one of the most accurate we have ever tested. Other free versions of OBD2 scanning software have a tendency to lag every once in a while. This is not a major issue unless you are tuning the vehicle after installing aftermarket go-fast parts. Lags, delays, and inaccuracy can be annoying if you’re trying to get the most out of your mods!

Not sure if your Bluetooth OBD2 scanner is compatible with your vehicle? You should first download Torque Lite. However, like all free versions of Android apps, Torque Lite may or may not work on some Subaru, Chrysler, and Nissan vehicles.

But for a free app, Torque Lite can reset engine fault codes, export map and log files to Google Earth, and provide you with customizable dashboards.

As with all free versions, ads will be a major concern. Thankfully, the ads in Torque Lite are not as obnoxious compared to other free versions of OBD2 apps. However, if you have a diesel car, this app may not work depending on the make and model of the vehicle.

2. Torque Pro – Unlock the full potential of your wireless Android OBD scanner

For around $5 bucks you can download the more capable Torque Pro. This app is equipped with a dyno feature that gives you the ability to measure the horsepower and torque readings of your vehicle.

If you spend a lot of time tinkering under the hood, Torque Pro is the best OBD2 app for your Android device.

Depending on the make and model of your car, Torque Pro can also read transmission temperatures and measure your 0 to 60 mph run without using a separate device. Our favorite feature is the Track Recorder plug-in that functions like a black box for your car, truck, or SUV.

Not bad for an app that costs less than $5, right? Car guys and advanced users have nothing but praises for Torque Pro!

3. Dash – a free Android app for logging your trips and driving habits

The biggest drawback to Dash is that it occasionally crashes on some Samsung phones. Vince paired Dash with his Foseal scanner and used it on a 1999 Jeep Cherokee for two weeks. He found no such issues with the app.

The Best OBD2 Apps for Windows tablets and smartphones

Microsoft decided to get serious about mobile technology when they developed Windows 8 and 10. The Operating System was designed to be slimmed down and mobile friendly. While they are still not dominating the market as well as Apple and Android, they are making a splash with the Lumia smart phone. We’ve got a buddy with a Lumia phone, so last weekend we got together and tested out a few OBD2 scanner apps for Windows.

1. OBD Auto Doctor – a free Windows phone app

OBD Auto Doctor is a free OBD2 software for Windows that can scan, diagnose, and reset the trouble codes in your vehicle. It can display the readiness monitor of your vehicle prior to emissions testing, it can present real-time sensor data, and it can monitor fuel economy on both gasoline and diesel powered vehicles.

But in order to unlock the full capabilities of the app, you will need to download the paid version of OBD Auto Doctor. The Express plan is priced at $39.95 and is the perfect choice for people who want to get to know their car better. If you are a power user then you should opt for the Standard plan which is priced at $59.95. If you have a repair shop, then the Business plan at $199.95 is the best choice for you.

In our opinion, the free version of OBD Car Doctor is great for average users. But if you own or fix a lot of cars, the Express plan is ideal for most auto enthusiasts.

2. Car Scanner – OBD2 software for PC

Here’s something you need to know about Car Scanner: this app was inspired by OBD Car Doctor and Torque for Android. It is also is Beta version for now, but it still a fully-capable free OBD2 app that allows you to scan and read diagnostic trouble codes using your Windows phone, laptop, or PC.

With Car Scanner, you can customize a multiple page dashboard for live data and engine diagnostics. It also supports multiple OBD2 protocols including CAN-BUS, and it can also show you the meaning of the fault codes from the Car Scanner database. This is one of the best free OBD2 software designed to work with your PC.

Car Scanner is also available as a paid version that only costs $2.99. However, the free version is our preferred choice for average users (assuming you can deal with some popup ads every once in a while).

You can now use your Smartphone to Scan your Car

Smartphones today contain the power to be powerful tools for a ton of tasks including diagnosing your car for problems.

The steps to using Torque Pro are straight-forward. Setting up your PIDs and extensive diagnostics is where it gets tricky. I linked to a video below to help describe that in more detail. You can also read more in-depth directions from the official Torque Wiki.

To start, you need to: 

1. Locate your OBD2 port and plug in your OBD2 scan tool (we like the BAFX or Foseal). It’s usually found in a panel under the steering wheel on the driver’s side. If you don’t know, Google will help you find it.
2. Turn the key to ‘On’ or ‘Accessory.’ You don’t need to start the engine.
3. Pair your Phone with the App via bluetooth. Click the Bluetooth icon on your phone settings and ‘scan for devices.’ Select the adapter.

Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner Review

Hi, Vince here. Getting a check engine light is one of the most dreaded feelings in the world. Your car’s engine can cough, wheeze, and shake without deploying the check engine light. When that happens, your car will most likely need new fuel/air filters and the requisite tune up. But when the check engine light is illuminated, no amount of tuning can remove the cause of the problem. We learned this the hard way as were trying to fix our test car.

As it turns out, we have a brand new Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner that we can use today in troubleshooting this problematic Honda Civic that’s broken down in the back of John’s yard.

This Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner review couldn’t have come at a better time. This will be my first time to try the Kiwi 3 OBD2 scanner.

Now, I have tried a ton of OBD2 scanners in the past. If you’ve missed it, two of our favorite Android OBD2 tools are the:

Right out of the box, it is clear the Kiwi 3 is not your run-of-the-mill wireless OBD2 scanner. But can it hold up to our other scan tools?

Premium Features at a Premium Price

The Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner sports a premium look and feel. Is this enough to merit a high score? At first I had my doubts, but it certainly doesn’t feel like the plastic that you find in some of the cheap-o scanners.

If you’re in the market for a cheap OBD2 scanner, the Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner is not a stellar choice. (We’d suggest grabbing a BAFX or FOSEAL if you want a OBD2 adapter).

This adapter is on higher price spectrum compared to other wirless OBD2 adapters we’ve tested. The only other scanner that’s more expensive would be the Bluedriver which is a time-tested and battle hardened tool.

So why does it cost more than the cheaper adapters?

Like the Foseal OBD2 Scanner, the Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner is cross-platform compatible with Windows, Android, and iOS devices. But unlike the Foseal Scanner, the Kiwi 3 is an ultra-fast OBDII scanner that works 4x faster while consuming less energy in the process.

Bluetooth connection that works for iOS!

It uses a Bluetooth connection which is more reliable and works much better than WiFi-enabled adapters. This is a huge win for Apple fans that are tired of losing their WiFi connection when trying to troubleshoot their vehicle.

You like dead vehicle batteries? Yeah probably not. Unlike cheaper adapters, the Kiwi is designed to be plugged in and can be left in your vehicle permanently without draining your battery. This is pretty awesome if you’re lazy like me, or just don’t feel like dragging plugging and unplugging the adapter when you’re done with it.

But is the connection speed, cross platform usability, and low power dray enough to justify the premium price tag? That’s what we intend to find out.

Durable Build Quality and Supreme Compatibility (iOS and Android Support)

Whereas other cheap OBD2 scanners can feel flimsy to the hand, the Kiwi 3 Wireless OBDII Scanner is different. The device is constructed from automotive grade and impact-resistant ABS plastic. The OBD2 connector is also equipped with gold-plated terminals to further enhance the premium feel and wireless performance.

The scanner is also equipped with LED indicator lights and is designed to work on all known OBDII protocols including SAE J1850-PWM, SAE J1850-VPW, ISO-9141-2, ISO 14230-4 Slow/Fast, ISO 15765-4 CAN, SAE J2411-SWCAN, and SAE J1939 250/500kps.

All of this might sound like a mouthful, but what this really means is the Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner will work on all 1996 and newer vehicles that are built and/or sold in the United States. Click here for a full list of supported vehicles.

It will also work with any Android or iOS phone or tablet. That’s pretty sweet!

But what I really liked about this OBD2 scanner is the slim and lightweight design. It is nearly invisible when plugged into the OBD2 port in your vehicle and sits just 0.68-inches thin. I’m not really sure if this is the smallest and lightest wireless OBD2 scanner, but it is definitely one of the smallest and most compact OBD2 scanners we’ve tried so far.

The Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Scanner can read and reset engine trouble codes including both generic and manufacturer-specific codes. It can measure engine horsepower, 0 to 60 mph and ¼ mile lap times, stopping distances, and monitor fuel economy.

Getting our hands dirty – the Kiwi 3 Scanner Review

Still can’t get over the price tag of the Kiwi 3? Would it help if I told you the device won the Best New Mobile Electronics Award at SEMA? It also garnered the Editor’s Choice for wireless OBD2 scanners by Popular Mechanics and has won 7 SEMA Global Media Awards. Just as a side-note here, I couldn’t find the PM or SEMA links for proof, so if any of you are aware, please contact us.

Anyway, as I mentioned earlier, we were trying to diagnose some performance issues with our friend’s car. Our vehicle is a gutsy 2013 Mitsubishi Mirage sedan equipped with a 3-cylinder engine and CVT automatic transmission. The engine purrs quietly on cold starts, but the idling will sputter once the engine heats up.

When the idling is erratic, it also comes with a host of acceleration problems. The car will bog down when the gas pedal is pressed hard, and the engine will suddenly spin to life erratically as you press the throttle.

But the engine never stalled, unless you turn on the A/C. After a week of erratic idling and weak performance, the check engine light came on, and then the engine refused to start after that.

Like I said earlier, this was the perfect timing for our Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Bluetooth Scanner Review. We do have a ton of OBD2 scanners at our disposal, but I was curious how the more expensive Kiwi 3 can outperform other cheap OBD2 wireless scanners.

The Kiwi 3 OBD2 scanner came in a sturdy white box. Even the packaging feels premium. We hooked up the device to the OBD2 port and fired up my Android tablet. We decided to use the Kiwi OBD App for Android in this procedure.

First thing I noticed is the lightning-fast connection. The Kiwi 3 OBD2 does not require a painful Bluetooth pairing process or Wi-Fi configurations. All I had to do was to plug it in and launch the app. The process was fast and seamless thanks to the “Insta Connect“. I was able to establish a secure connection in virtually seconds!

As it turns out, the Kiwi 3 OBD2 scanner was able to detect the generic trouble code DTC P0261, which is Cylinder 1 Injector Circuit Low. It was the only trouble code in the CPU.

We grabbed our case of tools and immediately pulled out the fuel rail to expose the injectors. We cranked the motor to find out if the injectors are misfiring. True to form, injector 1 was not working.

I decided to inspect the injector ground wiring, but everything was fine. The guys removed all of the injectors for pressure cleaning. Mind you, removing sensitive engine parts is not exactly a DIY job. Thankfully, we’re more than your typical DIY guys.

After cleaning the injectors, we tested each to determine the spray pattern. We bolted everything back into place, erased the trouble code, and proceeded to turn the key.

Still, the engine refused to start. We went back to work and pulled out the spark plugs. We also fired up the Kiwi OBD app to double check for any trouble codes. The spark plugs were still a bit wet from the fuel spray. We quickly found out spark plug 1 was producing a relatively weak spark. The plug also had traces of heavy carbon build-up.

This is a bit odd. The spark plugs were replaced a couple of months back, so they should be working fine. The car was fitted with expensive Iridium spark plugs, which are designed for a longer service life.

We replaced all the spark plugs with some Denso PK20TT’s, bolted everything back into place, and cranked the motor. After three or so attempts, the engine purred back to life!

Some more thoughts

What’s really impressive is the fast and reliable Bluetooth connection of the Kiwi 3 OBD2 Bluetooth Scanner. We’ve had trouble using the cheaper OBD2 adapters in the past where it takes multiple attempts to connect to the WiFi or Bluetooth. But the Kiwi3 is painless to connect! The device is manufactured using “InstaConnect Bluetooth technology” – we have no clue what the means, but it produces fast and reliable wireless connections.

Would I recommend the Kiwi 3 Bluetooth OBD2 scanner over cheaper scanners? If money is not a pressing matter, you want Android and iOS support, and you like the speed, sure! In fact, if all you want is a reliable and discreet OBD2 monitoring device that you can leave plugged in as you drive, the Kiwi 3 OBD2 Wireless Scanner is an excellent choice.

But if you’re working with a tight budget, it is better to look elsewhere. Like I said, you can find cheap wired or wireless OBD scanners for a lot less (hint: BAFX or FOSEAL!)

Conclusion

Alright so what are my thoughts after writing this Kiwi 3 OBD2 review? The scanner is pretty awesome! It has the look and feel of a professional-grade scan tool and it can sync faster with your Android, iOS, or Windows device.

My only caveat with this scan tool is the price. I found it hard to justify the high price tag.

I worked on a lot of cars, and I really mean a LOT! I started tinkering with cars in high school. My experience allowed me to test drive and diagnosis a multitude of makes and models, including prestigious German cars.

I became particularly fond of the OBD2 system on modern cars. If your vehicle is 1996 or newer, you have an OBD2-compatible car. Without the OBD2 diagnostic system, it will be extremely hard to pinpoint the nuances in your car’s engine. When something goes wrong, it will all turn into a time-consuming guessing game.

The type of ELM327 software will all depend on the make and model of your vehicle. The ELM327 microchip is primarily designed to work with modern vehicles that utilize the CAN OBD2 protocol (ISO 15765-4). However, the chip is also compatible with the following OBD2 protocols:

• SAE J1850 PWM (41.6 kbit/s) and VPW (10.4 kbit/s)
• ISO 9141-2
• ISO 14230-4 KWP
• ISO 15765-4 CAN
• SAE J1939 (250 kbit/s and 500kbit/s)

If you have an older car, you will need to verify the OBD2 protocol of your vehicle. This will ensure that your scanner and ELM327 software is compatible with your vehicle.

How to Get Rid of the Check Engine Light

If you previously bought an OBD2 ELM327 scan tool, they you are probably dealing with a check engine light on the console.

But in order for the scan tool to work, you also need to download a paid or free version of ELM327 software for car diagnostics. Depending on the scan tool, the ELM327 or OBD2 software will basically communicate with the scan tool to show you the specific vehicle parameters, i.e. reading and showing the meaning of the check engine light on the dash.

So, if you are using a Windows laptop or PC, you need an ELM327 software designed for Windows. But if you are using a wireless Wi-Fi OBD2 scan tool such as the Foseal or the Bluedriver, you need to download a compatible ELM327 software. Since both of the aforementioned scanners are also designed to work wirelessly with Android devices, all you have to do is download a compatible app on Google Play and you’re ready to work.

After you’ve paired the app with your scan tool, you can begin car diagnostics!

Running the Car Diagnostics with the ELM327 software

When everything is complete, here are the things you need to do:

• Download the ELM327 software and install in your device. Do not launch the program/software. Wait until step 3.
• Hook up the ELM327 OBD2 scanner or Bluetooth interface in the OBD2 port of your vehicle. All car models after 1997 are required to have the OBD2 port. If you are using a USB scanner, simply connect the USB interface to your laptop.
• Turn on the car ignition but don’t start the engine! At this point, you can launch the ELM327 software. It will automatically detect the OBD2 reader and the vehicle ECU.

That’s it! You can go ahead and play with the features and settings of the ELM327 software.

Of course, if the primary reason is to diagnose the source of the check engine light, you can proceed to do that as well.

Allow me to issue a stern reminder: if your vehicle has a check engine light and you erase the trouble code using your OBD2 scanner, the code will resurface and the check engine light will illuminate once more if the trouble was not fixed. This may mean cleaning or replacing engine sensors and certain vehicle components like fuel filters or catalytic converters.

While the Car Scanner ELM ODB2 is still in Beta version as I speak, it managed to work very well in our Windows laptop and smartphone. We were able to diagnose the OBD2 fault codes and read the sensor data in our fleet of test vehicles without encountering unusual errors.

But since Car Scanner ELM OBD2 is still in Beta, you can expect a couple of bugs upon first use. If you are downloading this software on a Windows mobile device, make sure the default install location is set to phone memory. The latest Windows Mobile 10 Update has a bug that makes it tricky to download and install the software on the SD card of your device but it should be fixed soon.

2. OBD Auto Doctor

You can download FREE version of OBD Auto Doctor at the Microsoft Store here. In my opinion, the free download version is good enough for average users. But if you demand more features such as monitoring real-time fuel economy, clearing trouble codes, or reading sensor data, you will need the paid version.

However, there’s a minor caveat. If you are using a Windows laptop or PC, the paid version of the software is a bit costly. OBD Auto Doctor is offering the Express plan for $39.95 and the Standard plan for $59.95. If you fix cars for a living, you need the Business plan which will cost you $199.95.

But for mobile devices, it’s compatible with Windows 10 Mobile, Windows Phone 8.1, and Windows Phone 8. You will need to download the free version of the app and upgrade to the Pro version for around $9.99 via an in-app purchase.

Don’t get me wrong about Torque Lite. The free version of Torque is good enough for basic applications but it had trouble reading the trouble codes on some Nissan and Subaru vehicles.

Torque Lite also contains a fair share of advertisements within the app which some users might find annoying. Torque Lite still remains one of the best free ELM327 software you can download today, but power users can download the more powerful Torque Pro for approximately $5.

The great thing about Torque Pro is the built-in dyno feature. This will allow you to measure the horsepower and torque ratings of your vehicle without paying huge money at the tuning shop. The app can also measure the 0 to 60 mph time of your vehicle if you’re interested in that kind of thing.

2. DashCommand

You can drive smarter with the DashCommand OBD ELM app for Android. This is a free OBD2 app that you can download on the Google Play Store. What I really like about DashCommand is the enriched user experience. Did you know you can still use the DashCommand OBD app in your Android smartphone or tablet even without a separate ELM327 code reader?

That’s right. You can still use DashCommand to view and monitor gas prices, engine light alert lookups, and vehicle maintenance procedures. But if you hook up an OBD2 scanner, you can diagnose and read engine fault codes and monitor the I/M readiness of your vehicle.

I did encounter some problems with DashCommand on my old Samsung phone. The app will sometimes freeze or crash after connecting via Bluetooth. But on newer Samsung devices with updated versions of Android, the operation was smooth and seamless.

1. CarScanner

New for 2022, the CarScanner is a great free ELM327 app for iOS devices even though it’s designed for the iPad. With around 14,000 ratings on the app store, we feel it deserves the #1 spot on our list.

As long as your car model is post 1997, you should have a working OBD2 port and this software should work on your phone. Just make sure to pair it with a quality obd2 interface like the Kiwi 3, Viecar, V-Gate, Carista, LELink, Veepeak, and you’ll be diagnosing error codes and monitoring vehicles with no trouble.

2. EOBD Facile for iOS

EOBD Facile is one of the few free ELM327 apps that you can get for your iPhone. It is developed and maintained by Klavkarr out in France. Currently it’s holding a 4.4 star rating on the Apple store, so users seem to love it. There’s not much documentation on the web, so you’ll have to download it spend some time learning the car diagnostic software before you start pulling error codes and viewing vehicle data.

Klavkarr sells their own ELM327 hardware interface here , but it’s over $100 bucks at the time I’m writing this. Personally I haven’t used this app, but I would imagine it would work with regular wifi interfaces like the Kiwi 3 or Veepeak.

3.Bluedriver for iOS

We’ve been reviewing OBD2 scan tools for about 5 years now, and the Bluedriver by Lemur Motors knocks the competition out of the park. If you want the gold standard of hardware + software, I gotta recommend this one. Now I know you might ask me why I put this at #3 if I think it’s so good? Well, the interface is not cheap. You’ll spend north of a hundred bucks to buy their OBD2 interface. So the app itself is free, but the hardware is more than some of the cheaper units on the market.

Of course this OBD2 software reads live sensor data as well as freeze frame data.

Still, if you want the best mobile ELM327 car diagnostic software and OBD2 interface, it’s hard to beat the Bluedriver for pulling accurate data.

If you have an Apple or iOS device, you can’t go wrong with OBD Auto Doctor. Pair this app with your scan tool and it’s one of the smoothest and most accurate free ELM327 software for Apple tablets and smartphones.

This OBD2 gauge app from PalmerPerformance is finally available for Apple devices running iOS 9.0 or later and can be found in the app store. Unfortunately it’s not a free app, but for about $10 bucks, it’s not a bad deal.

DashCommand for iOS gives you crucial insights to the functioning of your engine and current performance. If you have any error codes or DTCs, they can be easily pulled for troubleshooting. After fixing the problem, use this ELM327 software to reset that pesky Check Engine Light.
