Car A/C Not Blowing Cold Air After Recharging the System

Hi my name is Matt.

The other day I found that the AC in my car not blowing cold air like it used to when I bought it. So, I figured I’d write a quick article to help any of you that may be dealing with a vehicle AC not blowing cold air after recharge.

It used to be that car air conditioning systems were standard equipment only in expensive luxury marquees. But nowadays, even the cheapest small cars are equipped with standard A/C from the factory. If the A/C in your vehicle is well-maintained and serviced regularly, you can expect it to continuously cool the cabin when you need it most. But there are times the air conditioner will not blow cold air even after recharging the system.

What could have gone wrong? To get right to the point and save you time if you are in a hurry, here is a list of the 6 most common reasons why your car’s A/C is not blowing cold air after a recharge:

Leakage

Improper Recharge

Faulty Compressor

Condenser Issues

Expansion Valve or Orifice Tube Issues

Electrical Issues

If you’d like to learn more details about the signs and symptoms of these issues, other, less common causes, and the cost to repair the problem, keep reading below!

In order to fully understand the possible cause of charged ac still warm, it is important to understand how an air conditioning system works.

The Basic Principles of Car Air Conditioning

The main goal of the vehicle A/C is to cool or lower the temperature of the surrounding air. It does this by reducing the moisture content of the air, which is lowering the relative humidity so to speak. Hot air is filled with moisture. Colder air is dryer. The air conditioning system will absorb the air inside the cabin, remove or lessen the humidity, and blow the cooler air via the air vents.

It all sounds simple, right? The main principles in a typical air conditioning system are evaporation, condensation, compression, and expansion. The main parts of an A/C are the following:

1. Refrigerant or Freon

If your car A/C not blowing cold air consistently, the first thing to check is the refrigerant level.

No products found.

The refrigerant is the fluid that passes around the entire A/C system. It can evaporate at lower temperatures and condense into liquid form when exposed to high pressure. The A/C in your vehicle is a sealed system. Any loss of refrigerant can be attributed to leaks in the system. Remember that Freon doesn’t fade – it leaks away. If the A/C is constantly low on refrigerant and is constantly blowing hot air, check for leaks.

Read more about Freon here.

Old Air Conditioner Compressor – courtesy of: Laprell – See more of their work on Flickr!

2. Compressor

If your car A/C stopped blowing cold air all of a sudden, it’s likely your compressor needs to be replaced.

The compressor is the engine that drives the entire A/C system. If the compressor is not working or is lacking in oil, it has a tendency to break down and cause the entire system to fail. This results in an inoperative A/C and a steaming hot cabin.

Replacing a vehicle A/C compressor will set you back about $500-$800 dollars including labor. Source.

3. Condenser

The condenser is utilized to convert the refrigerant from vapor to liquid. High amounts of pressure is required to condense the vapor. When this happens, large volumes of heat is produced. The condenser will remove the heat by utilizing the ambient air blowing in the front of the vehicle, or via the fan that also cools the radiator.

4. Receiver/dryer

After the refrigerant condenses, it is passed on to the receiver or dryer. It is a small canister located in the engine bay. The job of the dryer is to remove any moisture from the refrigerant. Excess moisture is harmful to the A/C and can cause a variety of problems such as blockages and damage to mechanical parts.

5. Expansion valve

The refrigerant will then flow to the expansion valve. The expansion valve will remove the pressure from the liquid refrigerant. This allows the Freon to expand and convert back to vapor as it is sprayed into the evaporator.

6. Evaporator

The refrigerant will now pass the evaporator. It is here that the low-pressure Freon will vaporize and absorb the heat from the passenger cabin. The blower fan will push air over the evaporator to recirculate the colder air. The compressor will draw out the refrigerant vapor and convert the low-pressure vapor into high-pressure liquid and the process will repeat continuously.

I know it’s a lot to absorb, but knowing the working components will make it easier to find out why the car AC is not blowing cold air sometimes.

Does your vehicle AC air feel hot like a desert?

Why is my vehicle A/C still blowing hot air?

For starters, if there was a problem with the system from the very beginning, you can’t expect the A/C to work just by simply recharging or adding Freon inside the system. This is a common misconception that needs to be addressed.

Of course, if your car AC stops blowing cold air after a while the first thing you should check is to make sure you’re not low on refrigerant. If you’ve made sure the vehicle AC system is fully charged, then these are the next common components that cause a hot A/C system even after recharging it with Freon:

Faulty compressor

If the compressor is not working, no amount of refrigerant will be able to restore the efficiency of the A/C. A faulty compressor can be caused by age and wear, but electrical problems can also cause an inoperative compressor. The main OBD2 error code for this issue is P0645, but codes P0531 and P0534 will also sometimes appear. If you turn on the A/C switch, the compressor should come to life immediately. If not, either the compressor is broken and would need to be replaced, or there are faulty wirings preventing the compressor from powering up.

Car AC compressors usually last 10 years (source). So if your car is older than 2013 and the compressor hasn’t been replaced, this is likely the reason your system is blowing hot air.

Want to replace the compressor yourself? Watch this video from Scotty

Broken cooling fan

A broken cooling fan will not only cause the A/C to blow hot air, but it will also lead to engine overheating. P0480 is the primary error code for a malfunctioning cooling fan. The condenser is bolted to the exact same location of the radiator. If the cooling fan is not working, the condenser will not be successful in getting rid of the excess heat in the Freon. The result? The air conditioning will not blow cold air to the cabin.

Refrigerant leaks

If the A/C works okay then gradually blows hot air after recharging, you might be dealing with refrigerant leaks. The safest and effective way to find leaks is to vacuum the system. Take your car to a qualified technician to have the system diagnosed. It is generally advised to purge and vacuum the system before recharging to detect leaks beforehand.

Dirty system

The evaporator is prone to accumulating large amounts of dirt and debris. This is the reason why the entire system should be flushed and cleaned every few years. Cleaning the A/C is not just a matter of spraying the air vents with pressurized air. You will need to take the vehicle to an expert garage for servicing. The process will usually involve pulling out the evaporator from under the dashboard and cleaning the serviceable parts. The cost for this service ranges from $150 – $300 for most vehicles. The technicians will also check the expansion valve, the level of oil and refrigerant in the system, and adjust the thermostat when needed.

These auto air conditioning troubleshooting tips should be enough to fix 80% of common A/C issues.

Conclusion

If the A/C is blowing hot air, recharging the system should do the trick. But if the car air conditioner is still blowing hot air after recharging, it is best to have a professional diagnose the problem.

Wear and tear are inevitable occurrences that come with owning a car. As time passes and your car mileage increases, little signs of wear and tear start to pop up. While some wear and tear aren’t serious and are manageable, others may require immediate replacement. Here is where some car owners panic.
How do you purchase the ideal car part for your car without encountering problems? Obtaining the correct car parts can be a complex process that requires due diligence, planning, and proper research. Below, we covered 6 important car part-buying tips designed to help put your mind at ease when shopping for car parts for your vehicle.

1. Determine the Car Parts you Need

The first step to buying car parts involves determining the parts you need. Are your brake pads faulty? What about your headlights? Were they badly damaged during a minor head-on collision? Do you need to replace your clutch or water pump? Identifying the car parts you need makes the shopping process smooth and easy. It also helps to eliminate the hassle and embarrassment that comes with buying the wrong car part. In addition to identifying the parts you need, check your car manual for the specifications of the components required. Remember, cars differ, even cars of the same brands may require different parts. So, take your time to determine the car parts you need before heading to the auto parts store.

2. Research Prices from Various Retailers

After identifying the car parts you need, what next? Rather than stroll into an auto part retail store across the street and grab the required part, you must
take time to do price research. Compare prices between various auto part stores to get the best value for your money. Spread your research netwide, comparing prices between offline, and online stores and the local auto store down the street.

The goal? To find a store that sells quality parts at an affordable price, and not one that sells cheap inferior parts. So don’t just focus on the price while ignoring the quality of the components. Strike a balance between cost and quality so you don’t shoot yourself in the foot.

3. Research the Supplier

To avoid any inconvenience or issues that may arise post-purchase of a car part, research the supplier before visiting. Are they reliable and trustworthy? What is their online rating? What about their reviews and testimonials? What is their track record? Terrible or impressive? When you’re trying to purchase car parts, it’s always better to be safe than sorry. So, take time to research the supplier to avoid issues that may mar your buying experience. Visit reputable review platforms like Trustpilot and read through the store’s reviews. This is important for potential first-time customers looking to purchase car parts from an unfamiliar car part retailer.

4. Shop Online

If you don’t have the time to visit a car part retail store, there are numerous reputable auto parts online platforms at your disposal. These platforms—which boast different varieties of car parts— add ease to the shopping process, allowing car owners to shop from the comfort of their homes. Also, unlike physical stores, online stores provide car owners with an easy way to compare prices.

Here is the best part:
With online shopping, the parts are delivered to your door-step—just like that! As a rule of thumb, before you order auto parts online, ensure you read reviews and testimonials. This will help you determine the reliability, and trustworthiness of the company. Plus, it gives you a clear picture of how the platform treats its customers.

5. Seek Professional Advice

Aren’t sure if a car part is compatible with your car? Or do you have questions regarding the installation of a car part? Reach out to that friend, colleague, or neighbor who is a car expert. Or better still, contact a reliable mechanic for help. Contacting a professional for advice helps ensure that you make an informed decision. The professional has the experience to provide you with advice on the right part for your car, saving you from mistakes that may ruin your buying experience.

6. Check Warranty and Return Policies

Before buying a car part, check the warranty and return policies provided by the seller. Is the warranty period fair? What are the return policies? Do they make sense? A reliable retailer will offer a reasonable warranty period. If you find one that does, it shows they have unwavering trust in the quality of their product. Also, a reasonable return policy makes it easy to return the product if it fails to meet your expectations or if you encounter compatibility problems.

Wrapping It All Up

Auto repairs can sometimes come up unexpectedly and are usually very expensive. Whether it’s due to a freak accident that wasn’t your fault or simply just because your car has been sitting largely idle for too long, the need for repairs is undeniable. And, most of the time, if it’s not something you can fix on your own, these repairs are expensive or enough to put a big dent in your finances.

Not everyone is always prepared and willing to pay for such costs from their pocket money once they abruptly arise. Therefore, in this article, we will explore some of the many ways you can get funding for your vehicle repair.

So, let’s dig in!

Auto Repair Loans

Auto repair loans are personal loans that cater to the finances looked after in case of vehicle repairs. This loan is available to car owners who choose to apply when they have no other means to pay an unanticipated repair bill.

The loan can be borrowed from various lenders, including banks, credit unions, and online financial institutions. In this, interest rates and repayment terms will differ depending on your credit history and the lender’s policies. Shop for the best rates and read the fine print to understand all fees and penalties.

Also, consider the loan amount carefully; borrow only what is necessary to cover the repair costs to avoid overextending your finances.

Insurance Coverage

Having good insurance coverage could be pretty helpful at any time one wants to come up with repair cash for the car. It is especially true in cases when the accident was the cause of massive damage. If you have the right coverage, this means that most of the car repair costs will be covered by your insurance company. In simple words, you will not have to pay a hefty amount from your pocket. Instead, it will be covered in your yearly premium.

If the accident was not your fault, it is often better to hire an attorney. The reason? Because they know exactly how to deal with insurance companies. They ensure that you get paid the full amount that the situation warrants and not what the insurance company first offers. According to experts at Herrman & Herrman, the negotiations are tricky and need a thorough investigation and proper paperwork. Lawyers are trained to handle all paperwork, levels of negotiation, and legal complexities to ensure you get the right compensation for your losses. Remember, insurance may cover more than the damage done to your car. So, insurance and a knowledgeable attorney can greatly affect how smoothly and fairly you will have your related-to-accident expenses reimbursed.

Credit Cards

Another convenient method to handle those unexpected car repair costs is using a credit card. Keep in mind that this is almost a quick fix; you swipe your card, and voilà, the repairs that your vehicle has been needing get all done without you having to pay cash up front. It is especially useful if the bill is more than what you have in your bank at that time.

But remember, it is not free money. This is something you will need to pay back—usually with interest. Some credit cards give rewards or cashback, which can act as a nice little treat for using your credit card. Just be cautious of the interest rates. If you are capable of paying it back on time, then it is a perfect option. But if it takes longer, those interest costs can add up.

Emergency Savings

Emergency savings work like a parachute for those unforeseen moments in life, including the repair of one’s vehicle. It is the money you’ve saved particularly for this purpose, so when something such as a sudden breakdown of your car happens, you are prepared.

Using your emergency fund means paying for these repairs without stressing where the money will come from. You do not have to be concerned over interest rates like with loans or credit cards, considering it’s your own money.

Having this cushion of savings makes a difference. It stops you from falling into debt and helps you face life’s surprises with more equanimity. So, if your car suddenly requires repair, you can use this fund to pay the repair costs.

Wrapping It All Up!

So, there you have it: various ways to ease the financial burden of auto repairs. Whether it’s through a loan, tapping into insurance, or dipping into emergency savings, you’ve got options. Remember, each choice has pros and cons, so pick the one that best suits your situation. Being prepared and knowing your options can make all the difference in handling auto repair costs without unnecessary stress.

Stay informed and choose wisely!

We had a good argument deciding on the Bosch Icon vs the Rain-X 840014. The reason for debate is because Bosch has designed this blade to be a single unit, which is great for keeping out snow and ice. But Mike bought a pair for his wife’s Kia Optima and the driver’s side wiper blade just never fit the window very well, and really sucked at whisking away moisture and being silent. However, we chalk this instance up to be the outlier because the Bosch ICON is an exceptional blade. We’ve been putting them on cars since they were released to market in 2011 and only had the one bad set for the Kia.

bottom line: If you want to invest in a set of wipers that are great for sun, snow, and rain, grab yourself a set of Icons.

Bosch applies an expert design to offer you long-lasting blades. You’ll love that these blades can be used for a longer period than most wipers, even if it comes at an elevated price. If you take good care of them, they may still be an economical option, since you won’t have to replace them often. The blades are made to last in cold and hot conditions, so it will help you in any climate you live in. Let’s take a closer look.

Pros

Bosch sells these blades in many sizes

The wipers can be easily installed and the kit includes 2 hook adapters

The blade is excellent for use in snowy conditions, because Bosch adds a protective shield. This inhibits snow and ice from building up on the arms; this increases your safety on the road

Bosch makes sure you can use these wipers for a long time, even if your car gets a lot of sunlight. The wiper is made of FX-dual rubber. This lasts up to 40% longer, because its resistant to heat and ozone damage

The tension spring makes sure the wipers stay close to the window so as much moisture as possible can be removed with every swipe

Cons

The price is higher than most windshield wipers on the market

Some people find a problem with these blades, seeing streaks on the window. This could be because the wipers are beam styled, which doesn’t put as much pressure on the wipers as some other styles. To prevent frustration, you may need to ask professionals to help you install them, so they can make adjustments if necessary.

Summary

This blade is an excellent combination of features that will help keep you safe in any weather condition. Unfortunately, it’s more expensive than most blades, but price shouldn’t be an issue when you’re thinking about safety. Get the best, so you know you’re safe.

Rain-X has been manufacturing vehicle parts for 40 years. This means these wipers are made based on a lot of knowledge and experience. You will benefit by purchasing an item that has been perfected over time, through many experiments and user feedback.

Pros

The wiper’s spoiler is aerodynamically designed. This gives less wind resistance so there’s a lesser chance the wiper will lift off the window when driving in strong winds or at high speeds

The blade is curved so it can follow your window’s contours

These blades are easy to install so anyone can set them up

They fit most vehicles, but cars with unique designs may have to check with the manufacturer first, to prevent frustration

Rain-X products are reasonably priced

Cons

Some clients complain about the fact that they don’t fit all vehicles. The wiper comes with various adaptors, but the wiper doesn’t fit snugly to all of them

The adaptors don’t all fit well on wiper arms either. It may be smart to take your vehicle to your supplier to fit them before purchase, if possible

Summary

This is a well-designed wiper to try. If it fits your vehicle you’ll have a clean windshield for a long time.

If you’re working with OEM (original equipment manufacturer) parts, you know you’re working with quality. Though these wipers may not be exactly like the ones your new vehicle was supplied with, they can be quite close to them in quality and design. This is because car manufacturers know exactly what to design to complement their vehicles. Here’s what you’ll love about this AERO product.

Pros

You don’t have to switch blades when the seasons change. This high-quality product will offer exceptional service during hot, cold, wet and snowy weather

You won’t have to worry about drag or noise, because the wipers have an aerodynamic design

The wipers are manufactured from a special type of rubber. This rubber helps so that there is less streaking

A whole range of sizes is available, so they should fit most vehicles

Installation of these wipers are effortless. Three simple steps are followed:

Open the arm’s plastic cover

Insert the wiper arm

Close the plastic cover

Cons

These wipers only carry a 6-month warranty. This is more a neutral because blades should be replaced about every 1 year.

These aren’t the most affordable wipers on the market

Summary

It’s worth it to go with a brand that’s trusted by vehicle manufacturers as you’re sure to receive excellent quality. If the slightly elevated price doesn’t bother you, this could be the answer to your next wiper replacement.

Michelin is known for its excellent vehicle parts, and these wipers fall into the same degree of quality. Many tests show that these wipers perform better than similar products on the market. The manufacturers have added many features to help keep drivers safe. Here are a few worth mentioning.

Pros

Your window will be cleaned well thanks to evenly distributed pressure. This is attained by its Smart Hinge structure, which works better than beam-style wipers. An additional feature is that the ends are independently suspended so that they can grip your car’s window according to its exact contour. This structure even prevents snow from clogging the blade

You can easily exchange your current wipers with these, thanks to Michelin’s EZ-Lok connector system.

For the exceptional features, these blades are decently priced.

Cons

Some clients complain about streaking and wiper skipping. This problem is vehicle specific. You can ask professionals to help you install the wiper, or simply confirm whether these are appropriate for your vehicle before purchasing them.

Summary

Michelin manufactures quality products, but no item is perfect. If this item fits your wiper setup, you’ll love how effortless it helps you keep a clear view of the road, with no clogging, even in snowy climates.

Why do I need a good set of windshield wipers?

In a recent article from Napa, they suggest that windshield wiper blades should be replaced every six months to a year.

The upkeep of your vehicle is essential, no matter the car’s age or brand. Maintenance keeps your car in excellent condition so you can have hours of enjoyment. The more important reason for maintenance is that it keeps you safe.

Visibility is an important feature when it comes to safety. Abiding by rules, being vigilant and having the best headlights will allow you to see the road in front of you and drive safe. If, however, you can’t even see through your windshield, you’ll be left stranded or put yourself and others in danger if you attempt driving.

Recommended: https://scanneranswers.com/best-hobby-rc-cars-and-trucks-to-buy/

Your vehicle’s windshield wipers need to be in excellent condition at all times so you know there’s no chance of you causing an accident. Windshield wipers clear your windows so you can see where you’re going. Why is it necessary to purchase high-quality wipers? When do they need to be replaced? Let’s discuss these important matters. This review will show you some of the best windshield wipers on the market, so you know what to purchase next time it becomes necessary.

What does a windshield wiper blade do?

Windshield wipers are used to clear the driver’s area of vision by wiping the car window clean. As a driver, you have the responsibility to ensure optimum driving conditions as far as possible. The following can become bothersome if they block your view:

Rain—This can range from a few drops to pouring rain

Snow and Ice—This can quickly cause a frozen layer and needs to be wiped away quick

Live organisms—Bugs fly into windshields and can obstruct a driver’s view. Even though they’re small they can distract a driver’s attention

These factors can occur on any road, so no matter where you drive, windshield wipers are essential.

What you need in a high quality windshield wiper

When you’re out shopping for your vehicle’s maintenance, you may wonder about the wide range of wipers available. They are not all the same, and you’ll be wise to choose one which offers you the following features:

The correct size for your vehicle, because you need as much of your windshield cleaned with every swipe as possible

It needs to be smooth so it cleans efficiently

The wiper should grip the windshield, instead of pushing away from the window. This is done through the material used, the design of the wiper, and whether it’s flexible enough to follow the contours of the window

Windshield wipers that are high in quality last a long time without the substance deteriorating

Many of the factors mentioned above result in streak-free cleaning. Streaks can be just as obstructive as a bug or leaf clinging to the window

You don’t want to spend unnecessary money, so purchase wipers that you can replace yourself, instead of asking a professional for help. Many designs available these days make it easy for vehicle owners to take care of their cars effortlessly

If you can find an affordable wiper that offers all these features, you have found a winner!

When do you need to replace your windshield wipers?

The suggested time to replace replace wiper blades is 6-12 months. However, the guys at ScannerAnswers are cheap and we try to get as much life out of our wipers as possible! Vince one time got 3 years (!) from his blades, but we can usually get 2 years or two major winters worth out of a pair of blades. If you live in a cold climate like Minnesota or Canada, one of the best ways to get extended life from your blades in to extend them off the windshield whenever possible. This will prevent your wipers from freezing to the glass and extend life.

It’s time to replace your blades when you see the following:

The rubber parts should not be deteriorated. The wipers won’t clean well and they could break or crumble at any second

The wipers should grip the windshield. If the rubber has become too hard it will start lifting in places

If you hear sounds while the wipers are on, you should think of replacing them. A squeaking sound when the wiper moves across the window is a sign that the wiper no longer forms the correct angle. It can’t follow the window’s contours, so the changed pressure causes sounds

If the wiper doesn’t make a smooth swipe across the window, but rather makes streaks or hops across the space, you need to have them checked.

If any of these apply to your current wiper setup, you need to consider replacing your wipers with one of the options mentioned below.

Final verdict

We believe the best wipers would be the Rain-X B22 or the Bosch Icons. They are both great for rain, snow and harsh conditions. If you treat them right they should last at least 12 months.

I hope this guide to choosing the best windshield wiper blades has helped you choose the right one for your vehicle! If you have any questions, please contact us or leave a comment below.

Hey, I’m Matt, and today we’re talking about the best AGM batteries in 2023 (this post was originally written in 2019, but we have re-tested our favorites and the results have changed!) that you should consider if you’re upgrading your car battery. Keep in mind that AGMs are usually 2-3 times more expensive than a regular battery. Still, they also are smaller, last longer, and are spill-proof. Let’s get into more specifics about this unique battery pack!

Are you looking for a new Absorbed Glass Matt (AGM) Battery?

There are two general types of car batteries:

Flooded / Wet Cell – cheaper and quickly distinguished by the removable plastic caps on top of the battery

VRLA / valve-regulated lead-acid battery – sealed type of battery and is maintenance-free

But then again, there are two types of VRLA car battery: AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) and Gel Cell. Without a doubt, VRLA or maintenance-free is a better option than a flooded battery. But if you’re settling for VRLA, your money is best spent on the AGM variety, especially if you’re looking to replace the existing battery in your car, truck, or SUV.

What’s the difference between AGM and gel cell batteries?

AGM batteries are also called membrane batteries. Internally they contain a thin fiberglass mat that acts like a sponge to hold the electrolytes. On the other hand, gel cell batteries contain a gel-like silica-based electrolyte to offer higher power capacities.

However, gel cell batteries have a higher acid resistance and are not suitable for use in extreme hot or cold weather. AGM batteries are more suitable for automotive applications and offer a higher rate of power delivery in shorter bursts. Gel cell batteries are better suited for deep-cycle or marine applications.

It is hard to say AGM batteries are superior to gel cell, but the former can be manufactured to produce a lower internal resistance courtesy of the thin fiberglass membranes.

AGM batteries can produce higher outputs without increasing the actual size and weight.

Gel cell batteries are usually more costly than AGM, which explains why AGM batteries are still the preferred choice. But for any other marine or deep-cycle application, gel cell batteries are better than AGM.

Should I upgrade to an AGM Battery?

If you’re looking for the absolute top performance battery, then you should consider an AGM. Compared to conventional flooded style batteries, AGM batteries are going to pack a lot more “punch” due to the lead plates packed tightly into the glass mat separators.

You should consider this lead-acid battery type if you have a V8 engine or live in a cold climate. Make sure your car battery has enough amps!

Another trend that we’re seeing is newer vehicles outfitted with AGM batteries. With all the latest car technology like Teen Driver, Mobile Apps, Stolen Vehicle Recovery, etc. the electrical current draw is much higher. We see an even higher demand in the future for AGM batteries.

Optima AGM batteries are one of the best despite the higher price tag. The Redtop is ideal most automotive applications with a CCA rating of 720. The reserve capacity (RC) is 90 minutes.

But what makes Optima Batteries 8020 Redtop stand out is the unique SpiralCell Technology, which gives Optima batteries an unconventional shape. Instead of settling with traditional flat plate AGM batteries, the spiral wound cells inside each Optima battery offers up to 2x longer life and a stronger starting burst.

The spiral wound cells are also crafted from pure lead plates coated with lead oxide. The cells are encased in a spill-proof and shock-resistant casing that offers up to 15 times more vibration resistance. The Optima AGM battery may be expensive, but it remains one of the best AGM battery for the money.

Without a hint of doubt, Vmaxtanks is one of the experts in manufacturing the best quality AGM batteries. The Vmaxslr125 offers superior performance. The brand claims 8 to 10 years of life span in float mode, which is brilliant for an AGM battery. However, this particular AGM deep-cycle battery works best in solar panels or other renewable energy applications.

The Vmaxtanks Vmaxslr125 is a 12-volt AGM battery that delivers 125 amp hours of juice. Similar to other AGM batteries in this list, it also comes in a leak-proof and maintenance-free design. The casing is also rated to be shock and vibration resistant.

Conclusion

AGM batteries have a great life span and last a long time. Just make sure the battery is not discharged to lower than 60%.

If you’re planning to store your vehicle for the winter, make sure to purchase a battery charger or battery tender to maintain the capacity of the AGM battery in storage.
Indeed, an important aspect of choosing the best AGM battery in 2023 is not only the brand, but also how you care for the battery. Make sure to replace the battery if you notice cracks or signs of wear on the exterior casing.

Power windows are a great convenience. Press a button, and the window regulator moves the glass up or down. It’s fantastic when they’re are working, but what happens when one gets stuck? And just as important, what’s the power window repair cost?

Driving with a window that won’t close or open is frustrating. It’s also uncomfortable in hot, cold, or rainy weather. When your vehicle’s window glass is seized, it’s going to be on the top of your priority list to get fixed.

How Much Does It Cost to Repair Power Windows?

Several factors affect how much it costs to repair power windows. The process starts with a simple diagnostic that runs on average, from $50 to $200. The diagnostic involves opening the door panel and inspecting the window motor regulator assembly.

Rates do vary according to car model and year, along with your mechanic’s local rates. A chain repair shop or independent garage are usually less expensive than a dealership to have your window regulator repaired or replaced. As of late 2023 going into 2024, we are seeing that mechanic labor rates have really gone up. You can now expect to pay anywhere from about $100/hr at a rural, independent mechanic shop all the way up to $225/hr at a dealership in a large urban area.

What goes into total repair costs?

Most window motors require removing the door panel to replace, so that’s where the labor time goes up.

The regulator can also wear out, and this part can range up to $300 and more, depending on the vehicle make and model.

New OEM parts will cost more than used parts. After-market parts can save you money.

The small electric window motor also need regular replacing, and the cost is similar to a regulator. However, labor will be higher since more work is involved. Most certified mechanics recommend replacing both parts even if only one is out. In the long run, it will save you time and money.

Labor costs are usually the expensive part of power window repairs.

How Long Does it Take to Fix a Power Window?

Even if you have a vehicle with four power windows out, it won’t take days or weeks to get your car or truck back. The time needed for a diagnostic and repair is, on average, a 1-to-2 hours for each window. This applies to having both the regulator and motor replaced.

So, if you have four that need repair, you can expect your vehicle back within four to eight hours. Your mechanic or the repair shop will give you an estimate on the amount of time it will take. If you only have one power window that needs to be replaced, you can be out on the road again in about an hour.

Parts Involved in a Power Window

There are only a few parts in a power window assembly. You have the glass, the regulator, the switch, and the motor. Each piece plays an essential role in how smoothly your power windows function.

The regulator – responsible for feeding the glass through the tracks. There are two tracks, one on either side of the glass. The power window regulator also comes with a drive function that keeps the glass level as it’s going up or down.

The motor – provides the power the glass needs when you want the windows opened or closed. When these window motors fail, your glass is stuck. Most (but not all) vehicle manufacturers use a brush DC motor. It boasts a simple design that’s easy to replace and is also inexpensive. It’s the same type of motor used in adjustable seats.

The switch – similar to a fuse and uses the motor’s power to open and close the vehicle windows. Each window has a switch, and some vehicles come with a master one that controls all of them from a single button on the driver’s side.

Conclusion

You can expect at least one power window to have problems sliding up or down at some point. The most common windows to have issues with are, ironically, the ones you use the least, typically the rear driver and rear passenger windows. However, hopefully, they won’t all fail at the same time. It’s not cheap replacing power window regulators and motors, though switches are less expensive.

When your power window needs repair, take a minute to think about where you’re taking the vehicle. Dealerships are the most expensive, and you can get the same excellent service at a chain or independent shop for a noticeably lower price. Use OEM, aftermarket parts, or used parts will significantly affect the cost and may not be an option at all repair shops.

At only two inches in diameter, a car’s thermostat is a small but mighty part of the whole. Without it, your vehicle’s cooling system can’t regulate temperature, and causes expensive damage like blown head gaskets.

On the other hand, the cost of replacing this device near the thermostat housing is relatively low. So how do you know when to fix it, and how much it will cost to replace or repair it?

In this article, we’ll compare car thermostat replacement costs in a few common vehicles and explain when you need to get that faulty thermostat replaced.

Fixing this part before you have coolant leaks or high operating temperature causing engine overheating will save you time and money!

So when should you get it replaced? Let’s dive deeper into the possible causes and signs of a bad thermostat.

What Does the Thermostat Do?

To understand why your thermostat might be malfunctioning, you first need to know how it works.

Car engines depend on temperature control. If the engine is too cool, the car won’t run efficiently, working harder to keep the engine running. Too hot, and the whole system can burn itself out.

A vehicle’s cooling system involves two parts:

Engine assembly block

Radiator

Coolant/Antifreeze/Propylene Glycol flows between these two via special coolant hoses and helps keep the engine temperature low enough to avoid melted pistons.

The thermostat is the valve that controls coolant flow between those two systems, consisting of a rod set inside a cylinder filled with wax. As the engine heats the cylinder, the wax starts to melt and expand, pushing the rod up and opening the valve to allow coolant to flow. As the car cools back down, the valve closes again.

The thermostat reduces engine wear and emissions by blocking coolant while the car begins to heat up. The thermostat keeps the engine from overheating by releasing coolant when the car hits its optimal operating temperature. When this thermostat fails, your vehicle can’t regulate temperature, and the damage can be extensive.

How Long Does it Take to Replace a Car Thermostat?

Replacing a thermostat is a pretty straightforward job. If the engine hasn’t sustained damage and the maintenance doesn’t reveal other issues, you can have your thermostat replaced in about an hour – or even do it yourself.

That said, it may be a good idea to bring your car in if you’re experiencing issues. If you drove your car for any length of time with a broken thermostat, your engine may have overheated and caused more severe damage. Repairs on a damaged engine can take hours or a few days.

Symptoms of a Bad Thermostat?

A fault thermostat can malfunction in two ways, getting stuck open or getting stuck closed. It keeps your engine’s temperature within normal operating temperature.

Here are a few signs your thermostat needs replacement:

1. Slow Engine Warm Up

If your car is taking too long to warm up, or the heat isn’t working, your thermostat may be stuck open, allowing coolant to flow before the engine is warm. While this isn’t a huge safety risk before the engine temperature wont overheat, your vehicle will have to use more power to heat up and lose fuel efficiency.

2. High Temps On Dash Cluster Gauge

If the temperature gauge on your dashboard edges toward “hot,” you need to act immediately. A hot gauge may mean the thermostat is stuck closed, blocking any coolant from reaching the engine. Without coolant, the engine will overheat, causing potentially irreversible engine damage or even causing the engine to seize up.

3. CEL Illuminated

If your car’s Check Engine light comes on, it may be a closed thermostat issue. Always get your vehicle checked when your Check Engine light alerts you.

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: chevron-right” icon_color=”#00e002″]Check the OBD2 codes and see if a P0128 dtc is showing.[/su_icon_text]

How Long Does a Thermostat Last?

Theoretically, a new thermostat can last the entire life of your vehicle. They typically don’t wear down over time but can be damaged by outside factors like corrosion or debris buildup. However, you should replace it whenever you do a coolant flush which is about every 30,000 miles / 5 years.

If you suspect trouble, keep a close eye on your temperature gauge. If it’s getting too high, that’s your first indicator that your car engine could be getting too hot.

Since there’s no specific lifespan on a car thermostat, regular coolant system flushes will ensure everything is clean and running correctly. As we’ve explained above, car thermostat replacement costs are reasonably low, so it’s a good idea to have your thermostat changed regularly.

We recommend replacing the thermostat any time you have cooling system repairs or regular scheduled maintenance.

A faulty thermostat can cause irreversible damage to the rest of your engine, a good rule of thumb is: “When in doubt, get it checked!”

If you have some basic hand tools and about 2 hours of time on your hands, it’s not too difficult to replace this part yourself. Check out this video walkthrough on a PT Cruiser.

What Causes a Thermostat to Go Bad?

While the thermostat doesn’t naturally wear down, other factors can cause problems over time.

A few possible causes:

Deposits of dirt and debris from the cooling system can build up and keep the valve from closing.

The rod at the center of the thermostat can shift from its center position or get stuck and fail to properly open or close.

If the cylinder overheats, the wax can expand too far and cause leaks or breaks. Any loss of the wax means the valve may not open far enough or at all.

Coolant Quality – The quality of the coolant is crucial for the proper functioning of the thermostat. Coolant with the wrong mix or one that is excessively old can impact the thermostat’s performance.

In vehicles with electric thermostats, electrical problems, such as a malfunctioning sensor or wiring issues, can cause thermostat failure.

The thermostat housing bolts were not torqued down enough.

Low antifreeze, possibly caused by a coolant reservoir tank leak

You can test your thermostat’s functionality by pouring boiling water into the cylinder and then trying the water temperature when the valve opens. The process is a little tricky to get just right, though. If you suspect your thermostat may be malfunctioning, it’s worth simply replacing it, or taking it to your favorite auto repair shop.

Conclusion

Car thermostat replacement costs are usually low and can save you thousands down the road in engine repairs or replacements. Because the thermostat is such a crucial part of your cooling system, it’s worth getting checked regularly. If you have to get it replaced, expect to spend somewhere around $150 – $200.

Use our guide to know when your thermostat needs replacing and what you should be paying for the replacement job. With a little TLC, your thermostat should last the life of your car and keep your engine running like new!

Maybe you’ve been hearing your engine misfire when you start it, or you’ve noticed that your car hasn’t been performing as well as it used to. Unfortunately, these are all low compression in one cylinder symptoms.

Don’t worry, low compression isn’t a death sentence for your car. It involves a lot of hard work, time, and will probably result in you getting so frustrated that you’ll want to drive your “piece of $&!#” car straight into the junkyard. You wouldn’t do that though–you love your car too much.

You may be wondering how to fix low compression in one cylinder? Well, put on your seatbelt and get ready for the ride because I’m going to tell you how to get your car back on the road.

Possible Causes of Low Compression

Your car’s low compression can be triggered by a number of mechanical problems. Even if you’re wondering how to fix low compression in one cylinder for an outboard engine, you can trace the problem back to these causes as well. Luckily, they can all be repaired.

1. Head Gasket Problems

If your gasket isn’t aligned properly or is dilapidated, it can cause low compression in one cylinder. Gas from the inside of the cylinder will escape through the small hole or gap between the head and the cylinder. This prevents your engine from functioning the way it should.

Take a compression tester and measure the compression level in the cylinder. Make sure to check your gasket if your readings come out different.

2. Deteriorated Timing Belt

Your car’s timing belt connects the camshaft and crankshaft. A worn timing belt won’t allow the camshaft to turn.

When the camshaft can’t effectively open or close the exhaust valve or intake valve, combustion in the cylinders won’t occur and no gases will be emitted. As a result, low compression can occur.

3. Decrepit Pistons or Piston Rings

Your piston rings can get overheated, which makes the piston rings break. Carbon gases will then seep through the rings because they aren’t secured in the cylinder.

The pistons themselves can also get damaged. Usually, pistons are made of aluminum alloy strong enough to resist any damage from combustion.

But when there is too much heat in the engine, holes can form in the pistons. This causes gas to leak out of the holes and lowers compression.

To test if your pistons are worn out, you can pour oil into the spark plug hole. Then, test the compression. If it’s higher, then the cause of the compression issue is the piston or piston rings.

4. Cracks in Cylinder Wall

A cracked cylinder wall can definitely contribute to low compression. To find out of the wall is cracked, you can turn on the engine and keep the cap of the radiator open. Look to see if any air bubbles come out.

The bubbles you see are gases that are coming out of the cracks in the combustion chamber and escaping into the cooling system.

5. Valve Issues

On top of every cylinder are exhaust valves and intake valves. The valves are secured on the valve seat that is attached to the cylinder head. Both parts are comprised of a finely ground metal that forms the seal.

To power the combustion process, air and fuel enter the intake valve. The gases that form as a result exit out of the exhaust valve.

If the valves get overheated, the valve seal can get worn. This can make gas seep out and cause no compression in cylinder.

To find out if you have leaky valves, run the engine and use a compression tester instead of a spark plug. Keep an eye on the inlet manifold or exhaust pipe to see if there’s a gas leak. Any sounds that indicate a leak will tell you if the valves are bad.

If you find that your valves are damaged, you need to remove the cylinder head and do a valve job.

6. Flattened Camshaft

Every valve has a camshaft lobe. Sometimes, the camshaft lobes can get worn out as well, which won’t allow the valve to open.

When the valve doesn’t open, the cylinder can’t get any air in or release any exhaust gasses. This results in compression issues.

Check out your valves by removing the valve cover and flipping the engine over. Watch the valve movement that occurs. If you notice a problem, you need to replace the camshaft.

Steps for How to Fix Low Compression

Before you go tinkering with your car, you need to make sure that low compression is really the problem. Take a compression tester to get a measurement. These tests usually take about 45 minutes.

If you find that there’s low compression, you need to check all possible areas where the problem came from including the gasket, valves, pistons, and cylinder. Any type of damage in these parts can contribute to your problem. Below you will find the steps that may be needed to fix the low compression issue:

Identify the Cause

Low compression can result from several factors, including:

Worn Piston Rings: This allows air to leak past the piston.

Faulty Valves: Leaking or not sealing properly.

Blown Head Gasket: Can cause compression loss between cylinders.

Cylinder Wall Damage: Scoring or other damage can affect compression.

Piston or Cylinder Head Issues: Such as damage or excessive wear.

Inspect and Replace the Spark Plugs (if needed)

Sometimes, low compression can be caused by fouled or worn-out spark plugs. Inspect and replace the spark plugs in the affected cylinder to rule out this possibility.

Perform a Leak-Down Test

A leak-down test can help pinpoint the source of the compression loss. It involves pressurizing the cylinder and measuring the amount of pressure that leaks out. This can provide more information about the condition of the valves, rings, and other components.

Check the Valve Seating

If the issue is related to valves, inspect the valve seating for damage or wear. Valve clearance adjustments or valve replacements may be necessary.

Inspect the Piston Rings

Worn or damaged piston rings can contribute to low compression. If the rings are at fault, unfortunately, an engine rebuild or replacement may be needed.

Address Head Gasket Issues

If a blown head gasket is suspected, inspect for coolant in the oil or vice versa. Head gasket replacement is a complex task and may require professional assistance.

Cylinder Bore Inspection

If cylinder wall damage is suspected, the engine may need to be disassembled to inspect the cylinder bore. Depending on the severity of the damage, this could require cylinder honing or even engine block replacement.

The good news is that, once you find the issue, all you have to do is replace the damaged parts.

The bad news? You’ll likely have to take out entire engine.

Look on the bright side. Maybe you can use the opportunity to do a very thorough cleaning of the entire engine bay?

Other Compression Issues

You may find that there is no compression in your cylinders at all, low pressure in all cylinders, or no compression in one cylinder. These issues have some of the same causes that low compression in one cylinder has.

No compression in all cylinders is also caused by a broken timing belt or a broken camshaft, while low compression in all cylinders can be traced to damaged piston rings.

If you find that there’s absolutely no compression in one cylinder, then there’s a variety of other causes. A dropped valve seat, damaged valve spring, a damaged valve, and a dropped valve can all lead to no compression in one cylinder.

Get Your Car Up and Running

Don’t get discouraged by the amount of work that’s required to fix low compression. With the right tools and the knowledge of how to fix low compression in one cylinder, you can get your car performing great again.

Most common worn tie rod symptoms:

Vibrating, shaking, loose or clunking steering wheel

Uneven tire wear

Clunking or clicking noise

Poor handling

Vehicle not in alignment

Car not tracking in a straight line

Have you ever been driving and just felt some shaking in your steering wheel? Maybe you were taking a slow turn and heard some weird clunking noises coming from your car? If you have that is usually an indicator that you have a worn tie rod.

When a tie rod goes bad it can also cause uneven tire wear. If one side of your tire is worn down to the bead and the other side can pass the penny test you may have a tie rod that is loose and needs repair.

Having a tie rod that is worn or damaged can cause a misalignment in the front end which can typically result in a pulling to the left or right feeling in the steering wheel. The first thing it does is make your steering sloppy. It is your direct link from your steering to the wheel itself and when that gets worn, the wheel can steer slightly left and right of where you are aiming it. It causes your tire to wear out a lot fast and unfortunately, a lot of people don’t find out about their tie rods until they go for an estimate on tires.

Inner vs Outer Tie Rod

inner vs outer tie rod – save from Chris Fix: video

The inner tie rod is connected to a steering rack or steering gear box assembly and the outer tie rod ends are connected to each front wheel spindle. The tie rod’s job is essentially moving the wheels on the vehicle.

The ‘outer tie rods’ connect to the steering arms while the ‘inner’ connects to the steering rack.

Can bad tie rods cause shake, wobble and clunking?

The tie rods are connected to the front wheels of the vehicle, and YES a damaged tie rod can absolutely cause wobble and shaking mainly felt in the steering wheel. Along with the ball joint, these are the some of the most important parts in your steering and suspension system.

Typically, the faster you accelerate the more potent the shaking or wobbling will become which could result in losing control of the vehicle worst case scenario. Typically, when braking, it can cause vibration meaning you need to get your vehicle examined as soon as possible.

Bad ball joints, loose tie rods, loose shocks, bad calipers, bad bearings, bad rotors etc, can cause vibration when braking. The rule of thumb is to closely inspect every moving part to pinpoint the problem and fix/replace it.

Here is WHY and HOW a Bad Tie Rod Can Cause Wobbling and Vibration

Loose or Worn Tie Rod Ends

Tie rods have joints at both ends, known as tie rod ends. These joints can wear out over time due to regular use and exposure to road conditions. If the tie rod ends become loose or worn, they may allow excessive movement in the wheels, leading to a wobbling sensation, especially at higher speeds.

Uneven Tire Wear

Bad tie rods can cause uneven tire wear, which can result in an imbalanced and wobbly feeling while driving. If the tie rods are not maintaining proper alignment, the tires may wear unevenly, affecting the vehicle’s stability.

Steering Play

Worn tie rods can introduce play or looseness in the steering system. When you turn the steering wheel, there may be a delay or lack of responsiveness, leading to a wobbly feeling as the wheels may not respond as expected.

Vibration and Shaking

As tie rods wear out, they may not provide the necessary support and control for the wheels. This can lead to vibrations and shaking, especially when driving at higher speeds or encountering uneven road surfaces.

Can you tighten a loose tie rod?

Although it may seem like you can just tighten them up and all will be good, that’s not the case for tie rods. If a tie rod has been damaged or worn it is always best to have the damaged rod replaced.

With that I will say you don’t always have to change both the inner and outer ties. Sometimes you can just replace the bad inner tie rod if the outer checks out good.

Note: Tie rods are adjustable in order to maintain the alignment on the vehicle.

How long should tie rods last?

Tie rods can last as long as you own the vehicle. It all depends on where you take the vehicle and how your drive the vehicle. You may never have to change your tie rods; it all depends on the wear and tear you or another owner of the vehicle have induced on the vehicle. Most modern vehicles use a steering system called rack and pinion, which incorporates tie rods to help move the wheels. Tie rods are attached on both ends of the steering rack and as the pinion rolls over the slotted rack, they help push and pull the front tires as the steering wheel is turned. Tie rods offer an important function to a vehicle’s steering and therefore a car’s overall safety.

Changing worn tie rods on your vehicle can completely change the geometry of your vehicles steering system. So we suggest you get an alignment done after repairing a bad tie rod.

What causes tie rods to go bad?

The main cause of tie rod issues is usually the harsh road conditions. One main cause of tie rods going bad is lack of lubrication which plays hand in hand with harsh road conditions. A combination of things can result in your tie rod going bad, but it is usually user error by hitting a curb or a pothole too hard or causing some other trauma to your steering system. The rubber on the tie rod can end up dry rotting over time if not properly taken care of. Keep this in mind if you go to buy an older vehicle check the tie rods and make sure it is safe to drive or if you have to haul it.

Loss of grease or water intrusion into the joint also leads to accelerated wear.

Testing for bad tie rod ends

Try moving the wheel back and forth to test for a loose tie rod. Video snippet from FordTechMakuloco

Checking tie rods is simple. There are a few different ways:

1. Grab your jack…

lift the front tires up off the ground

grab the tire at 3 and 9 o’clock.

Push /pull on the tire to see if there is any movement in the joints or squeaking heard.

If the tie rods are worn you will feel the movement in the tire, the worse it is the easier it is to both see and feel.

2. Grab the tie rod and give it a good shake

Test the integrity by gripping, and shaking… feel for any movement.

If you notice any movement or play, odds are you have a worn outer rod and need to replace it.

3. Inspect the outer tie rod boot

If you see a gash in the boot there will usually be sand and dirt in there too. This is a good sign it’s time for repair.

Look for dirt and tears in the boot — photo from Ben Der on Flickr

If you have worn tie rod ends, we suggest you get ’em fixed as soon as possible or you’ll experience excessive tire wear. And no one wants to be forking over the cash for a new set of treads!

Conclusion

If you have a shaking or wobbling symptom with your vehicle it is always best to bring your vehicle to a mechanic and have them take a look at your situation. A catastrophic event like losing control of the vehicle because of tie rod failure can cause harm to you or other drivers on the road.

Have your front suspension checked, most people would say a wheel out of balance, but there is a real possibility the tie rod bushings are going bad which will cause a wobble, a bit like a shopping cart. Over the course of time due to impacts and normal wear, both the ball and the socket wear down. When that happens, the ball is able to move without full contact with the socket, basically flopping around inside. The ability to move around in the joint leads to positive wear feedback, once there is free movement the movement causes more wear which causes even more movement which creates even more wear.

Hi there my name is Vince, and today we’re talking about water in gas tank and how to remove the water if you get it in your vehicle’s fuel tank.

What’s so bad about a little water in the tank?

The internal combustion engine is designed to only suck in water and fuel. If water happens to be present in the gas tank, it can cause performance problems and premature engine failure. This is bad news for both new and older cars.

Small amounts of water in the tank is easy to address without removing the entire gas tank and emptying the contents. In most cases, simply filling the tank with high quality gasoline and driving the car normally is enough to eliminate the problem.

But what happens if there happens to be a lot of water inside the tank? What are the most common causes and symptoms of water contamination? You might think this is an impossible scenario, but this type of thing can happen without you even knowing it.

Fire and Water do not mix well!

Symptoms of Water in the Gas Tank

When water is present in the gas tank, you can expect the following symptoms when you drive the vehicle:

Sputtering, Misfiring, or idling problems. Water is not combustible. When water enters the combustion chamber, the engine will behave erratically. This is manifested by idling problems, sputtering, or poor performance. If your vehicle was running fine until you filled up the tank, sputtering or a sudden loss of performance afterwards can be blamed on contaminated fuel. Make sure you’re running good spark plugs and your vehicle is not showing a check engine light.

Surging or sudden increase/decrease in power. If you feel the engine losing power and suddenly surging forward as you drive, it might be caused by water mixed in the fuel. The engine will have a hard time compressing the water and will cause a noticeable loss in power. As cleaner fuel is injected, the engine regains power and will surge forward. In the absence of other sensor problems or engine faults, surging or significant loss of power might be caused by water in the gas tank, especially if the car was running fine before you filled the tank with fuel.

Rust doesn’t mix well with fuel tanks!

Rust in the gas tank. Of course, you will need to remove the entire fuel tank to determine if rust is present on the inside. Older vehicles are equipped with a steel gas tank, which will be prone to rusting if water is absorbed in the tank. If this is the case, replacing the fuel tank might be the best option to prevent contamination in the future. Check the fuel filler neck for damage. Check out preventing rust on the vehicle body.

Poor fuel economy. This symptom can also be blamed to a poorly tuned motor or a clogged fuel filter. Burning fuel, air, and water will drastically reduce the power output of the engine. The ECU will compensate and inject more fuel. This alone will negatively affect fuel economy.

The car refuses to start. In worst cases, the engine will refuse to start at all! If there is a pool of water on top of the piston as you crank the motor, there will be no combustion to rotate the pistons, leading to a no-start scenario.

What causes it?

What causes water to enter the gas tank?

Water can enter the gas tank in a variety of ways such as:

Broken or bad fuel cap. Even just a small crack in the fuel cap is enough for small droplets of moisture to enter the gas tank. If you go to a pressurized car wash or if the vehicle is exposed to hard rain and harsh weather, the chances of water entering the gas tank will only get higher. Don’t make it a habit to remove the fuel cap unless you’re filling up with fuel. If you open the fuel cap and you don’t hear a slight hissing sound (which is the sound of de-pressurizing the fuel tank), it is time to replace the fuel cap. This is not exactly a big issue wince a fuel cap will only cost $10 to $15.

Condensation. This is a common cause, especially in environments with large temperature variations. As the temperature changes, the air inside the tank can release moisture, leading to condensation. Over time, this moisture can accumulate and mix with the fuel.

Faulty seals or gaskets. Seals and gaskets in the fuel system can degrade over time, allowing water to seep into the gas tank.

Bad top fuel pump. In modern or newer cars, the fuel pump is located on top of the tank, which is located under the rear seats. If the seals on the fuel pump are worn out, it is susceptible in accumulating moisture inside the tank. The same holds true if the vehicle is exposed to deep floods. Read more about replacing a fuel pump.

Contaminated fuel. There are times when the fuel at the pumps will be contaminated with water. The fuel will be distilled in the refineries and will be pumped through miles upon miles of pipelines before making its way to the truck to deliver the fuel. The fuel will then be pumped to the storage tank at the gasoline station and stay there until the fuel is pumped to your car’s gas tank. Georgia drivers were recently getting bad fuel from Kroger fuel stations, so this is not uncommon!

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in the process. If ground water seeps into the storage tanks under the gas station, the fuel will be contaminated by water even before it reaches your gas tank. In order to prevent this problem, you need to choose where you fill up. It is preferable to sway away from old gas stations or those located in an area where flooding is imminent.

How to Remove Water from Gas Tank

If you suspect water contamination, it’s essential to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to the fuel system and the engine. Professional assistance may be required to drain and clean the gas tank, replace the fuel filter, and ensure that the entire fuel system is free from water.

The best way to remedy the problem is to consult a professional mechanic. As you know though, mechanics can get expensive! I always suggest people try using a fuel additive like Iso-Heet, or trying to fuel up the vehicle with high octane pump gas.

In mild cases of fuel contamination, simply filling up the tank with the highest-quality fuel is enough to solve the problem. The water will be saturated in the gasoline and will be burned off by the motor, hopefully without idling or performance issues.

Small amounts of water in the tank can also be eliminated by using a fuel additive such as Iso-HEET and Hydroburn G. Simply pour the fuel additive to a tankful of gasoline and let the product do the rest. But if there are larger amounts of water present inside the tank, additives will not be as effective as draining all the fuel and removing the gas tank.
