The other day I found that the AC in my car not blowing cold air like it used to when I bought it. So, I figured I’d write a quick article to help any of you that may be dealing with a vehicle AC not blowing cold air after recharge.

It used to be that car air conditioning systems were standard equipment only in expensive luxury marquees. But nowadays, even the cheapest small cars are equipped with standard A/C from the factory. If the A/C in your vehicle is well-maintained and serviced regularly, you can expect it to continuously cool the cabin when you need it most.  But there are times the air conditioner will not blow cold air even after recharging the system.

What could have gone wrong?  To get right to the point and save you time if you are in a hurry, here is a list of the 6 most common reasons why your car’s A/C is not blowing cold air after a recharge:

The Basic Principles of Car Air Conditioning

It all sounds simple, right? The main principles in a typical air conditioning system are evaporation, condensation, compression, and expansion. The main parts of an A/C are the following:

1. Refrigerant or Freon

The refrigerant is the fluid that passes around the entire A/C system. It can evaporate at lower temperatures and condense into liquid form when exposed to high pressure. 2. Compressor

3. Condenser

The condenser is utilized to convert the refrigerant from vapor to liquid. High amounts of pressure is required to condense the vapor. When this happens, large volumes of heat is produced. The condenser will remove the heat by utilizing the ambient air blowing in the front of the vehicle, or via the fan that also cools the radiator.

4. Receiver/dryer

After the refrigerant condenses, it is passed on to the receiver or dryer. It is a small canister located in the engine bay. The job of the dryer is to remove any moisture from the refrigerant. Excess moisture is harmful to the A/C and can cause a variety of problems such as blockages and damage to mechanical parts.

5. Expansion valve

The refrigerant will then flow to the expansion valve. The expansion valve will remove the pressure from the liquid refrigerant. This allows the Freon to expand and convert back to vapor as it is sprayed into the evaporator.

6. Evaporator

The refrigerant will now pass the evaporator. It is here that the low-pressure Freon will vaporize and absorb the heat from the passenger cabin. The blower fan will push air over the evaporator to recirculate the colder air. The compressor will draw out the refrigerant vapor and convert the low-pressure vapor into high-pressure liquid and the process will repeat continuously.

I know it’s a lot to absorb, but knowing the working components will make it easier to find out why the car AC is not blowing cold air sometimes.

Why is my vehicle A/C still blowing hot air?

For starters, if there was a problem with the system from the very beginning, you can’t expect the A/C to work just by simply recharging or adding Freon inside the system. This is a common misconception that needs to be addressed.

Of course, if your car AC stops blowing cold air after a while the first thing you should check is to make sure you’re not low on refrigerant. If you’ve made sure the vehicle AC system is fully charged, then these are the next common components that cause a hot A/C system even after recharging it with Freon:

Freon Leak Detector

Faulty compressor

If the compressor is not working, no amount of refrigerant will be able to restore the efficiency of the A/C. A faulty compressor can be caused by age and wear, but electrical problems can also cause an inoperative compressor. The main OBD2 error code for this issue is P0645, but codes P0531 and P0534 will also sometimes appear. If you turn on the A/C switch, the compressor should come to life immediately. If not, either the compressor is broken and would need to be replaced, or there are faulty wirings preventing the compressor from powering up.

Car AC compressors usually last 10 years (source). So if your car is older than 2013 and the compressor hasn’t been replaced, this is likely the reason your system is blowing hot air.

Broken cooling fan

A broken cooling fan will not only cause the A/C to blow hot air, but it will also lead to engine overheating. P0480 is the primary error code for a malfunctioning cooling fan. The condenser is bolted to the exact same location of the radiator. If the cooling fan is not working, the condenser will not be successful in getting rid of the excess heat in the Freon. The result? The air conditioning will not blow cold air to the cabin.

Refrigerant leaks

If the A/C works okay then gradually blows hot air after recharging, you might be dealing with refrigerant leaks. The safest and effective way to find leaks is to vacuum the system. Take your car to a qualified technician to have the system diagnosed. It is generally advised to purge and vacuum the system before recharging to detect leaks beforehand.

Dirty system

The evaporator is prone to accumulating large amounts of dirt and debris. This is the reason why the entire system should be flushed and cleaned every few years. The process will usually involve pulling out the evaporator from under the dashboard and cleaning the serviceable parts. We had a good argument deciding on the Bosch Icon vs the Rain-X 840014. The reason for debate is because Bosch has designed this blade to be a single unit, which is great for keeping out snow and ice. • If the wiper doesn’t make a smooth swipe across the window, but rather makes streaks or hops across the space, you need to have them checked.

Several factors affect how much it costs to repair power windows. The process starts with a simple diagnostic that runs on average, from $50 to $200. The diagnostic involves opening the door panel and inspecting the window motor regulator assembly.

Rates do vary according to car model and year, along with your mechanic’s local rates. A vehicle’s cooling system involves two parts:

1. Engine assembly block
2. Radiator

Coolant/Antifreeze/Propylene Glycol flows between these two via special coolant hoses and helps keep the engine temperature low enough to avoid melted pistons.

The thermostat is the valve that controls coolant flow between those two systems, consisting of a rod set inside a cylinder filled with wax. As the engine heats the cylinder, the wax starts to melt and expand, pushing the rod up and opening the valve to allow coolant to flow. As the car cools back down, the valve closes again.

The thermostat reduces engine wear and emissions by blocking coolant while the car begins to heat up. The thermostat keeps the engine from overheating by releasing coolant when the car hits its optimal operating temperature. When this thermostat fails, your vehicle can’t regulate temperature, and the damage can be extensive.

How Long Does it Take to Replace a Car Thermostat?

Replacing a thermostat is a pretty straightforward job. If the engine hasn’t sustained damage and the maintenance doesn’t reveal other issues, you can have your thermostat replaced in about an hour – or even do it yourself.

Don’t worry, low compression isn’t a death sentence for your car. It involves a lot of hard work, time, and will probably result in you getting so frustrated that you’ll want to drive your “piece of $&!#” car straight into the junkyard. You wouldn’t do that though–you love your car too much.

You may be wondering how to fix low compression in one cylinder? Well, put on your seatbelt and get ready for the ride because I’m going to tell you how to get your car back on the road.

Possible Causes of Low Compression

Your car’s low compression can be triggered by a number of mechanical problems. Even if you’re wondering how to fix low compression in one cylinder for an outboard engine, you can trace the problem back to these causes as well. Luckily, they can all be repaired.

1. Head Gasket Problems

If your gasket isn’t aligned properly or is dilapidated, it can cause low compression in one cylinder. Gas from the inside of the cylinder will escape through the small hole or gap between the head and the cylinder. This prevents your engine from functioning the way it should.

Take a compression tester and measure the compression level in the cylinder. Make sure to check your gasket if your readings come out different.

2. Deteriorated Timing Belt

Your car’s timing belt connects the camshaft and crankshaft. A worn timing belt won’t allow the camshaft to turn.

When the camshaft can’t effectively open or close the exhaust valve or intake valve, combustion in the cylinders won’t occur and no gases will be emitted. As a result, low compression can occur.

3. Decrepit Pistons or Piston Rings

Your piston rings can get overheated, which makes the piston rings break. Carbon gases will then seep through the rings because they aren’t secured in the cylinder.

The pistons themselves can also get damaged. Usually, pistons are made of aluminum alloy strong enough to resist any damage from combustion.

But when there is too much heat in the engine, holes can form in the pistons. This causes gas to leak out of the holes and lowers compression.

To test if your pistons are worn out, you can pour oil into the spark plug hole. Then, test the compression. If it’s higher, then the cause of the compression issue is the piston or piston rings.

4. Cracks in Cylinder Wall

A cracked cylinder wall can definitely contribute to low compression. To find out of the wall is cracked, you can turn on the engine and keep the cap of the radiator open. Look to see if any air bubbles come out.

The bubbles you see are gases that are coming out of the cracks in the combustion chamber and escaping into the cooling system.

5. Valve Issues

On top of every cylinder are exhaust valves and intake valves. The valves are secured on the valve seat that is attached to the cylinder head. Both parts are comprised of a finely ground metal that forms the seal.

To power the combustion process, air and fuel enter the intake valve. The gases that form as a result exit out of the exhaust valve.

If the valves get overheated, the valve seal can get worn. This can make gas seep out and cause no compression in cylinder.

To find out if you have leaky valves, run the engine and use a compression tester instead of a spark plug. Keep an eye on the inlet manifold or exhaust pipe to see if there’s a gas leak. Any sounds that indicate a leak will tell you if the valves are bad.

If you find that your valves are damaged, you need to remove the cylinder head and do a valve job.

6. Flattened Camshaft

Every valve has a camshaft lobe. Sometimes, the camshaft lobes can get worn out as well, which won’t allow the valve to open.

When the valve doesn’t open, the cylinder can’t get any air in or release any exhaust gasses. This results in compression issues.

Check out your valves by removing the valve cover and flipping the engine over. Watch the valve movement that occurs. If you notice a problem, you need to replace the camshaft.

Steps for How to Fix Low Compression

Before you go tinkering with your car, you need to make sure that low compression is really the problem. Take a compression tester to get a measurement. These tests usually take about 45 minutes.

If you find that there’s low compression, you need to check all possible areas where the problem came from including the gasket, valves, pistons, and cylinder. Any type of damage in these parts can contribute to your problem.  Below you will find the steps that may be needed to fix the low compression issue:

Identify the Cause

Low compression can result from several factors, including:

Worn Piston Rings: This allows air to leak past the piston.

Faulty Valves: Leaking or not sealing properly.

Blown Head Gasket: Can cause compression loss between cylinders.

Cylinder Wall Damage: Scoring or other damage can affect compression.

Piston or Cylinder Head Issues: Such as damage or excessive wear.

Inspect and Replace the Spark Plugs (if needed)

Sometimes, low compression can be caused by fouled or worn-out spark plugs. Inspect and replace the spark plugs in the affected cylinder to rule out this possibility.

Perform a Leak-Down Test

Can you tighten a loose tie rod?

Although it may seem like you can just tighten them up and all will be good, that’s not the case for tie rods. If a tie rod has been damaged or worn it is always best to have the damaged rod replaced.

With that I will say you don’t always have to change both the inner and outer ties. Sometimes you can just replace the bad inner tie rod if the outer checks out good.

How long should tie rods last?

Tie rods can last as long as you own the vehicle. It all depends on where you take the vehicle and how your drive the vehicle. You may never have to change your tie rods; it all depends on the wear and tear you or another owner of the vehicle have induced on the vehicle. Most modern vehicles use a steering system called rack and pinion, which incorporates tie rods to help move the wheels. Tie rods are attached on both ends of the steering rack and as the pinion rolls over the slotted rack, they help push and pull the front tires as the steering wheel is turned. Tie rods offer an important function to a vehicle’s steering and therefore a car’s overall safety.

What causes tie rods to go bad?

Testing for bad tie rod ends

Checking tie rods is simple. There are a few different ways:

1. Grab your jack…

• lift the front tires up off the ground
• grab the tire at 3 and 9 o’clock.
• Push /pull on the tire to see if there is any movement in the joints or squeaking heard.
• If the tie rods are worn you will feel the movement in the tire, the worse it is the easier it is to both see and feel.

2. Grab the tie rod and give it a good shake

If you notice any movement or play, odds are you have a worn outer rod and need to replace it.

3. Inspect the outer tie rod boot

If you see a gash in the boot there will usually be sand and dirt in there too. This is a good sign it’s time for repair.

If you have worn tie rod ends, we suggest you get ’em fixed as soon as possible or you’ll experience excessive tire wear. And no one wants to be forking over the cash for a new set of treads!

What’s so bad about a little water in the tank?

The internal combustion engine is designed to only suck in water and fuel. If water happens to be present in the gas tank, it can cause performance problems and premature engine failure. This is bad news for both new and older cars.

Small amounts of water in the tank is easy to address without removing the entire gas tank and emptying the contents. In most cases, simply filling the tank with high quality gasoline and driving the car normally is enough to eliminate the problem.

But what happens if there happens to be a lot of water inside the tank? What are the most common causes and symptoms of water contamination? You might think this is an impossible scenario, but this type of thing can happen without you even knowing it.

Symptoms of Water in the Gas Tank

When water is present in the gas tank, you can expect the following symptoms when you drive the vehicle:

1. Sputtering, Misfiring, or idling problems. Water is not combustible. When water enters the combustion chamber, the engine will behave erratically. This is manifested by idling problems, sputtering, or poor performance. If your vehicle was running fine until you filled up the tank, sputtering or a sudden loss of performance afterwards can be blamed on contaminated fuel. Make sure you’re running good spark plugs and your vehicle is not showing a check engine light.
2. Surging or sudden increase/decrease in power. If you feel the engine losing power and suddenly surging forward as you drive, it might be caused by water mixed in the fuel. The engine will have a hard time compressing the water and will cause a noticeable loss in power. As cleaner fuel is injected, the engine regains power and will surge forward. In the absence of other sensor problems or engine faults, surging or significant loss of power might be caused by water in the gas tank, especially if the car was running fine before you filled the tank with fuel.

   

3. Rust in the gas tank. Of course, you will need to remove the entire fuel tank to determine if rust is present on the inside. Older vehicles are equipped with a steel gas tank, which will be prone to rusting if water is absorbed in the tank. If this is the case, replacing the fuel tank might be the best option to prevent contamination in the future. Check the fuel filler neck for damage. Check out preventing rust on the vehicle body.
4. Poor fuel economy. This symptom can also be blamed to a poorly tuned motor or a clogged fuel filter. Burning fuel, air, and water will drastically reduce the power output of the engine. The ECU will compensate and inject more fuel. This alone will negatively affect fuel economy.
5. The car refuses to start. In worst cases, the engine will refuse to start at all! If there is a pool of water on top of the piston as you crank the motor, there will be no combustion to rotate the pistons, leading to a no-start scenario.

What causes water to enter the gas tank?

Water can enter the gas tank in a variety of ways such as:

1. Broken or bad fuel cap. Even just a small crack in the fuel cap is enough for small droplets of moisture to enter the gas tank. If you go to a pressurized car wash or if the vehicle is exposed to hard rain and harsh weather, the chances of water entering the gas tank will only get higher. Don’t make it a habit to remove the fuel cap unless you’re filling up with fuel. If you open the fuel cap and you don’t hear a slight hissing sound (which is the sound of de-pressurizing the fuel tank), it is time to replace the fuel cap. This is not exactly a big issue wince a fuel cap will only cost $10 to $15.
2. Condensation. This is a common cause, especially in environments with large temperature variations. As the temperature changes, the air inside the tank can release moisture, leading to condensation. Over time, this moisture can accumulate and mix with the fuel.
3. Faulty seals or gaskets. Seals and gaskets in the fuel system can degrade over time, allowing water to seep into the gas tank.
4. Bad top fuel pump. In modern or newer cars, the fuel pump is located on top of the tank, which is located under the rear seats. If the seals on the fuel pump are worn out, it is susceptible in accumulating moisture inside the tank. The same holds true if the vehicle is exposed to deep floods. 5. Contaminated fuel. There are times when the fuel at the pumps will be contaminated with water. The fuel will be distilled in the refineries and will be pumped through miles upon miles of pipelines before making its way to the truck to deliver the fuel. The fuel will then be pumped to the storage tank at the gasoline station and stay there until the fuel is pumped to your car’s gas tank. Georgia drivers were recently getting bad fuel from Kroger fuel stations, so this is not uncommon!

There are a lot of things that can go wrong in the process. If ground water seeps into the storage tanks under the gas station, the fuel will be contaminated by water even before it reaches your gas tank. In order to prevent this problem, you need to choose where you fill up. It is preferable to sway away from old gas stations or those located in an area where flooding is imminent.

How to Remove Water from Gas Tank

If you suspect water contamination, it’s essential to address the issue promptly to prevent further damage to the fuel system and the engine. Professional assistance may be required to drain and clean the gas tank, replace the fuel filter, and ensure that the entire fuel system is free from water.

The best way to remedy the problem is to consult a professional mechanic. As you know though, mechanics can get expensive! I always suggest people try using a fuel additive like Iso-Heet, or trying to fuel up the vehicle with high octane pump gas.

In mild cases of fuel contamination, simply filling up the tank with the highest-quality fuel is enough to solve the problem. The water will be saturated in the gasoline and will be burned off by the motor, hopefully without idling or performance issues.

Small amounts of water in the tank can also be eliminated by using a fuel additive such as Iso-HEET and Hydroburn G. Simply pour the fuel additive to a tankful of gasoline and let the product do the rest. But if there are larger amounts of water present inside the tank, additives will not be as effective as draining all the fuel and removing the gas tank.
