The directional arrows which can be slow to react should you or the radar source moves, which means the 5-0 could, in fact, be behind you while the 360 is still pointing to the left. In case you won’t want to bother with that, choose the less expensive Escort Passport Max 2, which features basically identical DSP chip as the Max 360 plus provides almost all of its features and entire responsiveness. However, the 360 is still the fastest, most precise, and most feature-packed radar detector I’ve ever owned.

The Escort Passport Max 2 is truly one of the greatest radar detectors you will find available. It’s very similar to the Max 360, except it doesn’t have the directional arrows showing right where the radar is. It is much cheaper than its big brother, and has the same awesome chip, with all the features.

The Passport Max II is used by more than a million drivers worldwide. Everyone I’ve spoken with loves this detector and warmly recommends it.

One of my favorite things on the Escort passport max 2 is the speed limit alert. It means that it is going to alert you whenever you drive faster than the lawful speed. It really is a useful feature that many radar detectors do not have. It also has three different modes: highway, auto and auto no x.

The Valentine One radar detector is maybe one of the oldest radar detectors in the industry and most likely the most recognized one. We have a few friends in blue on the (Police) force and we asked which detectors they would suggest the average Joe use. They all chose the Valentine One. Why? Because it’s one of the oldest detectors out there, has maximum coverage, no “frills” like *cough* Escort *cough*, and it simply gets the job done.

The Valentine One includes two sensor antennae located in the front and rear front and to detect both radar and laser signals. This device will be a boon to DIY enthusiasts and comes with a full load of features. Radar detection features all 4 bands, plus POP protection, and protection for non-U.S. bands such as the Ku-band. Moreover, it registers all 820-950 nano-meter traffic lasers.

Bottom Line: Grab this detector if you need reliable, 360 degree coverage and don’t want to break the bank with unnecessary features!

You can easily customize what bands you want the Valentine to detect for increased accuracy in your area and reduced false detects. The display screen is kind of limited (it shows the number of assailants, band, and the direction of the threat and strength of the detected signal). But with an additional accessory you can hook it up to an iPhone or any Android device. This enables you to view the information in a larger screen. I never used that feature on the test device we got, but it sounds pretty sweet. ?

4. Whistler CR90

The Whistler CR90 is a lot more budget friendly radar detector than some of our other scanners listed here. But just because it’s affordable doesn’t mean it skimps on features! It discovers Laser Atlanta Stealth mode, LTI TruSpeed S and Laser Ally laser bands, but also comes with some traditional brand radar monitoring just in case.

This radar detector contains GPS and have the capacity to keep track of driver alertness and create warnings in case of drowsiness. Filter modes as well as traffic flow signal rejection, could also be helpful in reducing false positives when it comes to laser detection.

Needless to say that this detector is one of the best for the money. Buy it now, and you won’t regret it. If it saves you even a single speeding ticket, it’ll pay for itself!

The Top Undetectable Radar Detector: Escort Redline

Editor Update: This detector is still a decent choice, but in 2018 it is slightly outdated and I cannot find it anywhere online. I’d suggest looking into a different one 🙂The Escort Redline detector cares less about smartphone compatibility and internet control, and more about long-ranging detection and customization features.

If you live in a state where radar detectors are illegal or frowned upon, then check out the Escort Redline. It blocks RDD (“Radar Detector Detector” – I’m not kidding 😛 ) that cops use to see that you’re using a detector.

The Escort RedLine offers probably the most excellent range you can find. We think that this is one of the best radar detectors because it is very effective, has a great range and it is very easy to use. This detector has one essential disadvantage. It does not support GPS, so it is quite useless against red light cameras, speed traps or speed cameras.

On the other side, this radar detector does not have large amounts of false alerts. Then again, it is well known that some garage door may even trigger an alert. On top of that, this is one of more expensive radar detectors available on the market.

Police Radar Basics – What is RADAR and how’s it used?

If you’re reading this article, then you already know that the 5-0 has the ability to harness frequency bands to determine how fast your Nissan GTR is travelling. The most common frequency band are the KA-Band and the K-Band (more info here), and you might also hear of the X-band. The X-Band is being slowly phased out but still exists in areas like New Jersey.

So how does Johnny Law use their Radar gun to nail you with a speeding ticket? Well, there’s two ways:

1. Constant-On (or CO)
2. RF-HOLD.

Constant-ON RADAR does just what it sounds like; it’s always on. These are the easiest to detect and hopefully avoid.

RF-Hold is operated manually by the officer. Typically this setup will be used by a parked Law Enforcement officer hidden somewhere just barely in site. When you come smoking around that corner at 97mph in your 2016 Z06 Corvette, the officer simply presses the button and BANG! Congratulations! You’ve got a speeding ticket.

This is a tough question to answer but we’re here to provide you some guidance.

First, you need to take into account the price per measurement (gallon, quart, ML, etc). A company might develop a product that makes unicorns and brings extinct animals back, but if you cannot afford it, then it’s useless for you. It depends. As it turns out, each state has different rules regarding the use of police scanners. The single best way to determine the legality of police scanners is to read the laws in your locale. This includes the use of conventional police scanners and police scanner apps for your smartphone or tablet.

Don’t fret. As it turns out, it is legal to purchase and own a police scanner. In fact, it is perfectly legal to listen to the local police, county sheriff, state police, fire department, and even the military.

But there’s a small catch. It might be illegal to listen to these frequencies if you take the police scanner out of your home, such as when you are driving in your car. This law not only covers conventional CB radios but even smartphones with police scanner apps as well.

There are states that have no laws regarding the use of police scanners, but others are not so lenient. Confused yet? Don’t be. The best way to determine the legality of mobile police scanners is to consult your local attorney.

How do I choose a police scanner?

Because there are many types of different scanners in the market, I can’t blame you if it is hard to choose which one to buy. The good thing is that scanners haven’t changed much in terms of functionality. They are still basically two-way radios that allow you to listen to various frequencies in your area.

When choosing a scanner, here are some factors that you need to consider:

1. Type of scanner. Do you need an analog, digital, trunked, or conventional scanner? You need to remember that you cannot convert an analog scanner into a digital scanner. If your state is currently utilizing digital systems, then it is only logical to purchase a digital police scanner. Digital and Analog are the most common radios these days.
2. Form factor. Police scanners can come in a variety of shapes and forms. There are two basic types of scanners: desktop scanners and portable scanners. The former is ideal for home use. The latter is the ideal scanner to use in the car.

Search for your town and take a look at the tone. If the tone is 88.5 PL for example, you would need an analog scanner becuase the squelch code PL is analog. NCS and DCS are digital tones and require a digital scanner to pick up.

What is the range of police scanners?

Again, the answer will depend on a lot of factors such as your location, terrain, and the transmitter power of the agency that you want to listen to. Handheld scanners will generally have a range of about 10 to 20 miles, but this range will either increase or decrease depending on where you are.

Can I use police scanners to listen to cellular phone calls?

Now that would be great, wouldn’t it? Unfortunately, NO. You cannot use a police scanner to tune into your neighbor’s cellular phone. In fact, federal law prohibits the monitoring of private phone conversations.

Digital police scanners utilize APCO-25 digital signals, while cellular phones use TDMA or CDMA digital signals.

Do I need accessories?

Absolutely. In order to improve the reception of your radio, you will need to purchase an outside antenna. If you are looking to buy a desktop scanner, you should look into purchasing a base station antenna. Mobile police scanners should be equipped with a mobile antenna to improve the reception as you drive along. The antenna is usually placed on the roof or trunk of your car.

This is a great vehicle that is cheap to maintain.

2. Mazda CX-3

This is not the biggest SUV crossover model but it does have some of the best handling. The CX-3 is affordable at $21,400 and only loses about $13,000 over the first five years while costing an additional $18,400 for maintenance and repairs. It works out to 42 cents per mile while offering a lot of good driving at a reasonable cost in return. Similar to it’s slightly larger sibling, the Mazda CX-5 it’s a roomy vehicle and a great option.

3. Hyundai Sana Fe

This is another choice for the least expensive SUV to maintain in 2020. It was redesigned in 2019 and now has auto-braking and is quite affordable. The Santa Fe sells for approximately $27,000 and the blue book value only depreciates $15,000 over five years of normal driving conditions. It costs about $20,400 to maintain over time and comes in at overall cost of 47 cents per mile.

4. Jeep Wrangler

Jeep always ranks high on these maintenance lists and the Wrangler is no different. It was redesigned in the last year but it continues to be iconic in its style. This is a great on-road and off-road vehicle. Its resale is solid and the vehicle only loses $11,799 of its value in five That is great considering the purchase price is almost $29,600. It has a per-mile cost of 48 cents with maintenance over the same time running around $24,350. A fun vehicle to own and easy to pay for.

It’s well-priced at $25,000 with only $20,700 is maintenance costs over five It costs 49 cents per mile which is great as far as ongoing costs go. A safe car that drives well for a reasonably low price.

7. Lexus UX

This is a luxury SUV/Crossover and well worth the money. If you want a vehicle that is a little higher-end, this is the way to go. While the costs are a little bit higher, they are in a reasonable range if you are looking at the luxury end of cars. It is sold at $33,175 and loses $20,260 over five Its price per mile is 57 cents but if you are looking at luxury, this is the low end when it comes to cost. Luxury vehicles will only go up in cost from this Lexus model.

8. Infiniti QX60

This SUV has lots of room and comfort along with being a quality vehicle. It is affordable at $44,995 and will only lose $26,300 of its value over five years. It will cost you about $25,000 in maintenance charges over this same time period which works out to 69 cents per mile. This cost is relatively good for the size and comfort of this vehicle. You’ll be hard-pressed to find something equal in size and quality for the low maintenance costs.

Final Thoughts

No matter what SUV you choose, you are always going to be hit with ongoing costs that go beyond the sticker price. If you do some research, though, you can find a great SUV with lower ongoing costs than many of the ones that are on the market. There are some high-quality vehicles out there that come with very reasonable longterm maintenance costs. There is no reason not to buy an SUV when the market is filled with so many models that can meet almost everyone’s needs and budget. That said, it is a smart move to buy an SUV with lower long term costs since gas costs are higher. You can offset the money you spend on gas with lower maintenance costs so you aren’t paying more than you should for a solid vehicle.

Design and Capacity

The ONLU rooftop cargo carrier has a soft-shell design with water resistant zippers and Velcro covers to insulate your cargo. It’s a great size — small enough to easily fit on your roof, but big enough to fit all your cargo. At 20 cubic feet, you’ll be able to fit everything you need, even for the longest of road trips. I tested one out on a 2014 Kia Soul, and it did not drape over the sides or front of the car. If you have a very small car, such as a Ford Fiesta, Mitsubishi Mirage, or Mini Cooper, you may want to measure your roof to make sure this cargo carrier will fit. It will take up about 55″ x 38″ when fully packed.

One thing I noticed right out of the box was how sturdy the material of the cargo carrier seemed. I only used it for one trip, but it seems strong enough to last many hundreds or even thousands of miles. The zipper was a little tough to use, but that is probably just because of how heavy duty it is. The manufacturers say it is completely waterproof! Also included was an anti-slip mat to help keep the cargo carrier in place on your roof. This is a plus, and it might even help prevent your roof from getting scratched.

Installation

The instructions included with the cargo carrier are very easy to follow with pictures that are very illuminating. It only took me about 15 minutes to get everything out of the box and installed on top of my 2014 Kia Soul. I was able to do it without any help from others and without any tools.

Since this car doesn’t have cross bars, I used the car clips to attach the cargo carrier to my roof. The car clips work by attaching to the weather stripping on your doorframe. It might take a little fiddling with it to find where the clips lock into, but I once I hooked them in correctly, the clips latched on tight and did not move. I was easily able to shut my car door even with the clips attached, and I had no trouble with the clips coming loose when I opened my doors after getting everything installed.

On the Road

Once I had everything installed, I took my car for a spin. As the instructions suggested, I started driving at relatively low speeds, and I stopped after about five miles to make sure everything was still attached properly. I noticed that the cargo carrier shifted backward a little, but the straps were still all tight and everything seemed to be in place. With everything looking good, I headed for the freeway.

At about 70 miles per hour, the front of the cargo carrier did start to flap in the wind just a bit. The straps attach about a foot back from the very front of the carrier, so this part is not held down to the car on its own. Whether or not this will be a major issue for you depends on the cargo you’re loading it with. In my test, the cargo carrier was only about half full. It works best when it’s completely full, and especially when the heaviest items are at the front of the vehicle. That will prevent it from shifting at high speeds.

Another thing to note is that, because the straps go through your door, the rubber seals around your doors may not be able to completely close. This makes for a bit louder of a drive. Again, this is most noticeable at higher speeds, and it’s not a major issue — just something worth noting.

Storage

When you’re finished with your trip, the ONLU cargo carrier folds down for easy storage. Removing the straps from your car is even easier than putting them on, and the cargo carrier fits back in the bag it ships in, ready for your next adventure. Once you have all your cargo out, you should be able to get the whole thing put away in about ten minutes.

Price and Warranty

This cargo carrier is a great value at less than $70 at the time of this review. To put that in context, rooftop cargo carriers from some of the big brands can go for over $500! That alone makes the ONLU rooftop cargo carrier worth a close look. Fortunately, the high-quality materials mean this cargo carrier feels nearly as premium as the most expensive options out there. Plus, the manufacturers are offering a two-year warranty, so if anything happens down the road, they should be able to help you out.

Our Review of the Kaiweets KVB01 Battery Tester

The first thing that caught my attention is the compact size of the Kaiweets KVB01. It’s small enough to fit into your glove box or armrest, making it easy to hold on to. The free fabric carrying case adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring your tester stays in top-notch condition. Also in the box are some easy-to-follow instructions, but you won’t need them after the first use; this tester is easy to use!

This battery tester’s digital screen makes it really easy to understand the condition of your battery. I ran the cold cranking amps (CCA) test, and it showed a bunch of useful info, including how charged it was (54%), the health of the battery (63%), the volts, the cold cranking amps, and the resistance. This info was really easy to follow along with, thanks in part to the clear display. I also ran a load test, and the screen helpfully walked me through how to rev the engine to run the test properly.

Speaking of the load test, I was worried that I might need to call up a friend to read the tester while I revved the engine. I was pleasantly surprised by how generous the cord length was! I could easily use the tester even while I sat in the driver’s seat. This is a huge time saver, and it makes it way easier to test your car battery.

Is it accurate?

Great question. We’re happy to report a resounding yes! The 2014 Kia Soul, the car I used with this tester, has had battery problems for years. Sure enough, it looks like my battery is at 63% health, which is normal but getting a little low. Probably time to start shopping for a new one soon.
