Nitro OBD2 Review

Matt here with ScannerAnswers with a Nitro OBD2 review. There’s been a lot of buzz around this chip because it claims to improve engine horsepower and increase fuel mileage by “automatically adjusting ECU settings.” I was skeptical of this tool, and we still aren’t convinced that it’s a great solution. We tested it on a 2005 Tundra and saw about a 1.5 mpg gain after running a full tank. The power seemed unaffected. We have talked with other friends who’ve used it and they also have mixed reports. Some people claim they feel a power increase AND mileage gain, others say the tool did nothing.

Automobile Performance Chips

Today, tuning up your vehicle no longer means taking it to the shop and getting the oil changed and replacing some core parts. It could just entail installing an Automobile Performance Chip to do the job instead. A large number of specialist companies can reprogram your Engine’s control unit to make it more efficient. This can give you increased performance, and can also give you better fuel economy and save you money over the long run. The whole thing can cost you several hundred dollars, but the question remains, is it worth it?

Do performance chips work?

Today, programs and software control the engine of a car. It’s no longer as simple as a hydraulic press. If you visit specialists, they can attach a laptop to your car and download some settings in to the diagnostics port to improve its performance. And many swear that the performance chips make a significant difference. The main argument is over fuel economy though. And one could argue that’s a fair argument to make since it saves you money over time. Some drivers also believe it’s a much cheaper way to get faster cars. And though, that may be an argument that favors style over substance, it is valid for the speed demons out there.

We believe that chips work much better on diesel vehicles (like or Powerstroke or Cummins) than they do on a naturally aspirated gasoline engine.

Vehicle manufacturers say that it’s an investment that ultimately isn’t worth it, since it alters the parameters of safe operation that are set by them. If they are exceeded for any reason, and repeatedly, the car will is bound to suffer from issues in the future. Let’s look at the pros and cons of performance chips.

 Pros

Performance seems to be the first thing that drivers point to when discussing performance chips. Some have sworn that it improves the speed of a car by 30% and that it gives you much more bang for your buck if you just spend a couple of hundred dollars more, improving your car.

Some people claim to see 1-2 MPG gain after installing their performance chips, but our results vary.

Mileage is also continuously brought up. The performance chip alters the fuel mixture of the car and thus gives you much more energy out of each drop of fuel that you buy.

 Cons

As automakers identify, the car can suffer heavy damage if its speed and mileage are altered due to performance chips. Over time, this damage may accumulate and irreversibly kill the car. As a result, the car may lose any of its resale value.

This biggest con is that the chip will likely do nothing at all. Worse than that, they could void your warranty our cause serious damage. Is that worth the risk?

The warranty could also be affected by the installation of a performance chip. Not only will the warranty be voided if the performance chip is installed, the insurance company will void most or all of its policies. This is because the owner of the car has altered the operating conditions of the car. Hence, the car company and the insurance company are no longer fully liable for any issues that may occur with the car Due to tinkering with the factory set limits.

Even if you do purchase a performance chip, there are several considerations to be made. You should look in to the manufacturer and go through multiple reviews over and over before you make a purchase. Cheaply made chips are a bargain, but they may end up doing more harm than good.

Final Thoughts

We think that Nitro makes a lot of outlandish claims of this tool. Boosting horsepower by 30% is usually only seen by adding a supercharger or turbo. If you have 10 bucks laying around and want to give it a try, you could see some decent improvements in fuel economy. Otherwise, you’d probably be better saving your cash and investing in some octane boost, or high performance spark plugs and wires.

Maybe what you need is an OBD2 tool like the Bluedriver to make sure your engine is running in peak performance.

Hope this Nitro performance chip review has helped you make an informed decision. If you’ve got any questions, please leave a comment 🙂
