Knowledge is the key to success. This is especially true when it comes to repairs that are needed on a vehicle. All vehicles sold in today’s market are equipped with electronics that require specific tools to access information. The electronics on any vehicle uses sensors, solenoids, and other devices to monitor how the vehicle is operating. Yeah, your car (or truck) is pretty much a computer on wheels!

How can the OxGord OBD2 Scanner help?

When there is a problem with a vehicle, there will be some sort of indication from the computer that is doing the monitoring of the system. Sometimes your car might spit and sputter and not start… But other times, it’s not that obvious! Most of the times your car’s computer will prompt an alert that there is an issue. A check engine light illuminated on the dashboard of the vehicle is one of the indicators that will show when there is an issue with the vehicle. OBD2 is what gives you (or your mechanic) access to the “On-Board-Diagnostics” of your car. Read more about OBD2 here: http://www.obdii.com/

The process of diagnosing a check engine light concern can be difficult, and confusing. Without a device that can communicate with the computer there can be no way of knowing what kind of fault is occurring. By using a computer scan tool like the OxGord Can OBD II Scanner, the trouble codes stored in the computer that caused the light can be retrieved. These codes will give a path of where to go in the diagnostic procedure.

Want to save money? The OxGord scanner can help!

After you run a quick scan using the OxGord scanner, you will have a code that will give you a general idea of what’s wrong with your car. Most DTC codes will be in this format: P0300. All that you have to do is run a quick Google (or http://www.trouble-codes.com/ is helpful) search for that code and you’ll taking your first step to saving money and fixing your car! Keep in mind, having the DTC code does not diagnose the vehicle. Having the code will allow you to have some basic knowledge of what kind of fault is occurring. For example, the P0300 is a misfire code. This means that you could have a vacuum leak (cracked or broken hoses) and is usually seen with a lean fuel mixture code (PP030x). This information can allow you to have an idea of what to expect before your car makes it to the repair shop.

Retrieve Diagnostic Trouble Codes and Their Descriptions

Scan tools like the OxGord CAN OBD II scanner allow for the retrieval of diagnostic trouble codes when the check engine light is illuminated. Having a diagnostic trouble code is very useful since it will give a direction of where to go in the diagnostic procedure. However, just having the code is not all of the information needed to start moving on the correct path towards diagnosing a vehicle. Having a description of what the code means is extremely important. There are many scan tools on the market. Some scan tools simply give the code with no other description. There are many different codes that can be set for an OBD II equipped vehicle. Even professionals will not know what every code means. Having a scan tool that will not only give the code, but also the description is very valuable. With out the description of the code it can be very difficult to know where the process of diagnosis starts. One code can be affected by multiple systems that are equipped on the vehicle. The code given does not necessarily give the consumer the root cause of the issue. Without the description of the code there is no way to know what course of action needs to be taken in the diagnostic procedure. Snag the best deal on this scanner here

Clear Diagnostic Trouble Codes

There is one very important step that needs to be taken after any repair for a check engine light is performed. Clearing the diagnostic trouble code needs to be done to ensure that the vehicle is repaired correctly. If the code is not cleared then the check engine light will continue to be illuminated even though the repair was made. This can also be useful when attempting to diagnose a vehicle. In some situations there will be multiple codes stored in a vehicles computer system. When there are multiple codes it can be difficult to determine the root cause of all the codes. Some codes may even have been set because of a different code that is also stored. When this occurs it could be beneficial to start fresh. Vehicle computers use monitors to determine if there is an issue with a vehicle. These monitors run tests while the vehicle is running. When clearing diagnostic trouble codes these monitors are also reset. If there are multiple codes stored in the vehicles computer the next diagnostic step may be to clear the trouble codes, perform a road test with the vehicle, and see which codes return. This will show which codes are current, and constant failures. The OxGord Can OBD II scanner will give access to the vehicles computer so these trouble codes can be cleared, and the system can start fresh.

How to use the Oxgord CAN OBD II Scanner Tool

OBD2 cable for the OxgordThis OBD2 code reader is one of the easiest to use tools I’ve tested. All you have to do is find your OBD2 port (usually found on the driver’s side about 18 inches from your pedals). Then, plug in the cord and turn on your car! No need to turn on the Oxgord because it’s powered by your car. Just hit “Enter” and it will show you the codes on your car. The two button operation makes it pretty hard to mess up 🙂 I’ve included a video that should help you if you get stuck though.

Specs

Choosing the correct scan tool can be difficult. There are many options on the market. Using specifications of each scan tool can be very useful when picking a tool that meets the consumers needs. The OxGord Can OBD II tool is both small in size, and weight which allows it to fit perfect in small spaces for storage.

  • Model is OxGord (You might also get a brand named Autel)
  • 8 ounces of weight
  • 10 x 1.5 x 6 inches of length

The biggest CON that I found was the the lack of features. But again, that depends on the needs of you, the consumer.

The tool is light in weight which makes it easy to handle. The two button option takes away the complexity of use. It is not large in size which allows it to fit in any toolbox. With the limited features this scan tool will perform its job with ease. Retrieving diagnostic trouble codes, and clearing them is an easy operation. The information received from this scan tool can give the consumer some knowledge before going into the repair facility, or give a professional the needed first step to diagnosing a check engine light concern.

I enjoyed doing this Oxgord CAN OBD II review and hope you found it useful! If you have any questions, or suggestions for our next review, leave a comment!
