Summary
The Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels are one of the best when it comes to detailing jobs. The towels are also great for the garage and the kitchen. These are premium ultra-soft towels that made it easier to polish and wax my vehicles.
Mike here. Today I’m gonna tell you about my experience using the Chemical Guys Microfiber Towel review.
We usually spend our time discussing OBD2 adapters but lately we’ve been doing a lot of articles on exterior and interior vehicle care. When using dashboard cleaners and protectants, car wax, and just about anything else that has to do with auto detailing, you’ll quickly find that you need applicators.
Introducing…….. the MicroFiber towel!
Microfiber towels are the top choice you can use for applying most sprays and other compounds because they’re more durable than paper towels or “shop towels” and much better than using your wife’s dish towels!
Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towel Overview
One of the most popular and bestselling microfiber towels today is the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towel. These come in a pack of six towels and are very affordable.
In this review, we’ll find out if the Chemical Guys Microfiber Towels are a viable cleaning tool for washing, waxing, and polishing your vehicle. I have tried a lot of microfiber towels in the past, and I wanted to find out if buying a premium brand of towels will really make the difference in terms of cleaning power and durability.
Notice I mentioned the word ‘durability’? Of course!
I don’t know about you, but I consider the durability as a primary factor in choosing a quality set of microfiber towels to use on my car. I’m sure you have come across cheap microfiber towels in the past. I’m sure they worked fine. Hell, I’m certain they probably worked great, right? But for how long?
I have purchased a LOT of cheap microfiber towels. I’m not even sure if they’re the real deal since microfiber has a unique structure and texture compared to a conventional terry cloth towel. The cheap variety have something in common: the microfiber strands tend to break up and deteriorate after 3 or 4 washes. I also noticed a significant reduction in cleaning power. Making matters worse is the presence of lint all over the previously wiped surface.
Lint drives me crazy after I finish a good wash, wax and shine!
So, yeah. I was itching to find out if the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels are more durable than ordinary towels.
So who are the Chemical Guys?
The Chemical Guys are a company that I believe have been around since 2008, but recently have gained a global presence thanks to their expertise in manufacturing high quality products for all types of vehicles. Their product speciality is automotive detailing and they offer tons of products for interioir detailing and external paint care. If you do much DIY work on cars and trucks, more than likely you’ve ran across this brand.
I can honestly say I haven’t found one of their products that I dislike. They might be more expensive, but they make products that last and work!
Features of the Chemical Guys Automotive Detailing Towels
Earlier I mentioned that microfiber towels are different compared to other fabrics. When purchasing microfiber towels for the car and home, there are two things you need to consider:
- blend ratio
- density
Microfiber is constructed using a blend of polyester and polyamide. The ratio is based on the amount of each material that was utilized in the cloth. If the blend ratio is 70/30, the cloth was constructed using 70% polyester and 30% polyamide. A higher ratio of polyamide means a softer and plusher towel.
When it comes to density, the microfiber cloth with a higher density will be thicker and better suited for washing and tough cleaning.
The figure is expressed as GSM or grams per square meter. As an example, a microfiber towel with 800 GSM will be thicker and fluffier than 350 GSM.
The Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels have a blend ratio of 70/30. They feel ultra-soft to the touch and are ideal for cleaning, buffing, and waxing. I’m not sure about the density since the towel is equipped with two sides: a short pile on one side, and a high pile on the other. This basically means you can use one side of the towel to remove wax or cured paste from your car’s paint job. Turn it over and you can use the other side to buff the finish to a glorious shine.
This towel also came with silk-banded edges that further prevents scratching and scuffing on delicate surfaces. The silk banding also holds the edges of the towel together for a more durable construction.
Each towel measures 16” x 24”, which was bigger than what I expected. Let’s find out if the Chemical Guys microfiber towels are worth the hype.
Testing out the Chemical Guys Microfiber Towels with a Wash, Polish, and Wax
I wanted to find out if the Chemical Guys microfiber towels are ideal for washing a dirty car. I know that microfiber wash mitts are better suited for this type of job. But since the towels came in a pack of six, I went ahead and tried it out anyway. It’s spring time and you know what that means… spring vehicle detailing!
These towels were able to lift off thick wads of dirt on the paint with the help of a soapy water mixture. However, the cloth was too big and too thick when folded in half. It was hard to manipulate the heavy, soaking towel as I was wiping the hood and the bumpers.
I used a separate towel to dry the car. In my opinion, they worked just as well as my old and trusted chamois cloth. But since the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels are larger than my chamois (and were to able more water in a single section), it took me less time to dry the car from start to finish.
On to the Polish…
So far, so good. The finish was smooth and scratch-free. I was working on a midnight-blue vehicle and I didn’t notice new scratches or swirls on the paint as I was drying the sedan. The paint had a couple of rough spots on the hood and roof so I proceeded to apply polish and wax to the vehicle.
I applied a thin layer of polish by hand using a clean applicator pad. I wiped off the excess using the high pile side of the Chemical Guys microfiber towels. I buffed the finish lightly using the short pile side of the towel and the results were awesome.
What’s more, the microfiber towel made it effortless to buff the paint to an incredible shine. By this time I was grinning from ear to ear since the microfiber towel was able to restore the surface of the paint with minimal effort. Of course, credit also goes to the Meguiar’s Mirror Glaze Ultra Finishing Polish that I utilized in this test.
Finishing with Wax…
Next, it was time to apply the wax. I personally like the Meguiar’s Gold Class Carnauba Paste Wax and have been using it for the longest time. I applied a thin layer of wax using a clean applicator pad and allowed the wax to dry to a haze. I grabbed a new Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towel from the pile and proceeded to remove the wax from the paint.
I utilized the high pile side of the towel to remove the dried haze. I turned the towel over to the short nap side and buffed the finish to a brilliant shine. It was that easy. If you’re not used to waxing or detailing your vehicle, let me tell you that it takes a lot of work to complete the job. But if you have the right products and the right tools, the job will be much easier. That’s how I felt as I was waxing and buffing the finish. The Chemical Guys Premium Microfiber Towels were in their best element as I was polishing and waxing the paint.
Thoughts on the Durability and Performance
But how about durability? I washed the towels in the washing machine for two full cycles and tested them again. After that, I washed them again and used them to wax my wife’s car. After 5 or 6 washing cycles, the Chemical Guys microfiber towels still felt as soft as the day I bought them. The silk banded edges were still soft and tight. The strands on the side with the high pile felt a bit looser after repeated washing and I also noticed a bit of lint on the surface after buffing the finish. However, the amount of lint was manageable and can be easily removed with a final wipe.
All in all, the performance and longevity of the Chemical Guys microfiber towels was commendable. Considering the low price, the towels offered superb value. This is one of the finest microfiber towels you can buy, especially if you’re a stickler when it comes to paint detailing. But as a washcloth for the car, it is best to stick with a proper set of microfiber wash mitts.
Things I did not like (Cons)
If you use it at home, you won’t be disappointed. My only caveat about the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels is the size of each towel. They are a bit too big. If you fold it in half, it is also a bit too thick. But I’m just nitpicking here, or maybe my hands are just too small.
I also wanted a set of microfiber towels with different colors so I can distinguish which cloth is for washing, waxing, polishing, etc. The Chemical Guys microfiber towels all came in the same bright yellow color to make it easy to highlight dust and dirt in the cloth. It would have been cool if the towels came in an assortment of colors so I can easily discern the right towel for the right job.
Conclusion
The Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels are one of the best when it comes to detailing jobs. The towels are also great for the garage and the kitchen. These are premium ultra-soft towels that made it easier to polish and wax my vehicles.
I did find the towels to be a bit too big and I complained about the generic yellow color of the towels, but that’s about it. Other than my meaningless complaints, I am proud to say the Chemical Guys Professional Grade Premium Microfiber Towels are definitely worth considering if you demand a durable and premium set of ultra-soft microfiber towels.
