For most us a scan tool with basic features is sufficient for our purposes. Checking and clearing trouble codes on our family cars is all we use them for. However, for the small repair shop or the home hobbyist mechanic, a more feature-rich machine can pay dividends by streamlining the actual process of troubleshooting Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) and repairing the root problem. For those that enjoy modifying and tuning their vehicles, the ability to log data in real time and store it for future reference is also useful. Closing Ideas

Most people love the Actron CP9690, and we give it a 4/5 star review. Some of our friends that have used this tool do have some criticisms with it. In our experience, these fall into two categories:

The Actron CP9690 does not always work to read and clear SRS or ABS codes. It must be noted that Actron does qualify the list of vehicles whose SRS and ABS codes can be read. So if you need to clear SRS and ABS codes, make sure your vehicle is included on Actron’s list!

Actron’s customer service sucks. One of the biggest complaints that we’ve heard of is their customer service being less that par…  I’ve heard of buddies not receiving a user manual with the scanner! (these are available online though).

The CodeConnect database makes up for any of the cons listed above. That feature saves so much time time in diagnosing the problem and letting you get to fixing your ride.

The Actron CP9690 is a premium scanner that is capable of reading both OBDII and some OBDI Vehicles. This makes it an excellent choice for a professional mechanic or an amateur enthusiast who carries out his mechanical repairs and who may own an older vehicle. It also benefits from its CodeConnect feature that allows for more rapid and accurate diagnosis of problems underlying a DTC saving both time and money by directing the person repairing the vehicle to the most common causes and even lists where components such as sensors may be found on the vehicle. It also allows realtime data logging, and allows data to be saved and sent to a computer. This is an advanced scanner that is well suited to someone who has some experience working with diagnostic devices. On the other hand, for someone who is a novice at maintaining and repairing vehicles, the Actron CP9690 can make diagnosis and repair of problems much less intimidating.

The vehicles computer uses monitors to inspect most electronically controlled components. These different monitors will run self-tests to let the computer know if there is an issue, and where it is located. If there is an issue with a system, the computer will set a code which will then turn on the check engine light. PROS:

We enjoyed the easy-to-read color screen, audible tones, and quick access to readiness monitors delightful. We’ve got a few mechanic buddies who use this scan tool in their shop for the quick access to diagnostic trouble codes, and readiness monitors. The quick access features are easier to use then some larger, more involved scan tools that can be found in repair facilities. The features are limited compared to the larger, more expensive scan tools, but for basic diagnostics the ease of access is a sure winner.

CONS:

We’ve heard of complaints with this OBD2 not updating. We never experienced this issue with our scanner, so we suspect that there are some defective models out there. If you do experience any issues with the Autel AutoLink AL319, just make sure you purchase it from Amazon and they will replace it or refund your purchase

PROS –

CONS –

• The “Repair Solutions” is setup on a per-vehicle basis. Meaning that you have to pay around $ for 1 vehicle. If you have multiple vehicles, this gets expensive
• If you want to access reports from your saved vehicle data, you must register an account on the Innova website. For some reason, Innova does not allow you to access them without using their website as a medium
• ABS does not work with every vehicle. We found that it doesn’t work with a 2002 Saturn, 2016 Ford, or Kia Soul

DISCUSSION –

Just like anything in life the Innova has some minor faults. The OBD link is short… this sucker is around 12 inches long… So don’t plan on slouching in the back seat and diagnosing your car faults 🙂

You might need to purchase a 5 foot expansion link with the goal that you can move around while you are taking a gander at the live information stream.

Another nitpick point is the shade of the illuminated LCD screen. The screen shading is a light dark rather than the somewhat blue hued that is shown. Just be aware that the screen might be a little difficult for some to read… It’s kind of like one of those old calculators you had to use back in math class.

CONCLUSION –

The Innova 3040c OBD2 Scan Tool contains expert level features, at a DIY mechanic’s price. As a scanner with a sticker price of under $100, it clearly pays off. If you don’t want to fuss with Bluetooth and Wireless connectivity that most OBD2 scanners now-days use, then the classic corded approach is very handy. Closing Thoughts

When looking for an entry-level scan tool the Innova 3100  is a very viable solution. There were a few things we did not like, such as the brightness on the screen is not the best. It can be difficult to read due to the low backlight. Also, this is a “code reader” which means that it’s good for giving you a direction to look into when the Check Engine Light kicks on but it will not save codes if the CEL is not on. If you need to see the engine temp, rpm, O2 sensor voltage, lean/rich fuel data, MAF sensor, etc, then you should look into higher end scanners.

However, if you are a DIY’er and just want to find out what the heck is causing your CEL to be on… Or you want to know if your car can pass an emissions test, then this might be the perfect scanner for you. This code reader doesn’t have a ton a bells and whistles, which makes it awesome for an entry level tool. No need to fool around with tons of menus when you just wanna get to fixing your car.
