Our Review of the Kaiweets KVB01 Battery Tester

The first thing that caught my attention is the compact size of the Kaiweets KVB01. It’s small enough to fit into your glove box or armrest, making it easy to hold on to. The free fabric carrying case adds an extra layer of protection, ensuring your tester stays in top-notch condition. Also in the box are some easy-to-follow instructions, but you won’t need them after the first use; this tester is easy to use!

This battery tester’s digital screen makes it really easy to understand the condition of your battery. I ran the cold cranking amps (CCA) test, and it showed a bunch of useful info, including how charged it was (54%), the health of the battery (63%), the volts, the cold cranking amps, and the resistance. This info was really easy to follow along with, thanks in part to the clear display. I also ran a load test, and the screen helpfully walked me through how to rev the engine to run the test properly.

Speaking of the load test, I was worried that I might need to call up a friend to read the tester while I revved the engine. I was pleasantly surprised by how generous the cord length was! I could easily use the tester even while I sat in the driver’s seat. This is a huge time saver, and it makes it way easier to test your car battery.

Is it accurate?

Great question. We’re happy to report a resounding yes! The 2014 Kia Soul, the car I used with this tester, has had battery problems for years. Sure enough, it looks like my battery is at 63% health, which is normal but getting a little low. Probably time to start shopping for a new one soon.

Within this article, we have mentioned a list of rust prevention sprays and paints. This is because they both provide different benefits. For example, using a rust prevention paint will provide a more durable protective layer and its generally more heavy duty. However, using a rust prevention spray allows you to spray into places where a paint brush will not reach and spray a larger area far quicker.

When performing auto rust proofing on cars, we recommend that you use a paint on the worst effected areas and then spray the whole area afterwards for all round protection. We discuss this is more detail below.

Application of Rustproofing

When you have purchased your anti rust paint or spray, you are now ready to begin rustproofing your car. However, before you begin applying any paint or spray, you should clear the surface beforehand. We recommend that you use a pressure washer to remove tough dirt on the underbody. You can then use a wire brush attachment to clear any dirt left over and remove any corrosion that is present. Although some paints say you are able to paint over rust, it is worthwhile removing it for the best possible result.

Regularly repeating this process of auto rustproofing over the years will ensure your car does not suffer bad corrosion that will effect its resale value. It is a messy process but worth doing because rust that is not treated will take its toll on your vehicle.

Durability

Durability of the auto rustproofing that you use is crucial to the effectiveness. If it is not weatherproof, chip and scratch resistant, it will not be very durable considering that its applied on the underbody of the car.

Using a rust preventive paint instead of a spray is usually a more durable method. However, it can be more time consuming to apply in large work areas and you will not be able to get into all the small gaps. Therefore, apply paint in the areas that are mostly effected by corrosion and then use spray for everywhere else.

How to Avoid Corrosion?

Road salt is one of the main reasons for car rust and its mostly during the winter season. For those with only one vehicle to drive, driving in the winter season with salt spread across the road is inevitable.

For those winter months, its vital that you thoroughly wash your car and paying special attention to the underbody and washing all four arches excessively. With the build up of salty and dirty roads, be sure to check that the drain holes are all clear and water can run through.

Stone chips and damage from driving is also hard to avoid in everyday driving. Using the correct protective car wax for your paintwork will provide an excellent source for prevent stone chips and repelling road dirt from your cars bodywork.

The Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) is best described as the “ticking time bomb” in most modern diesels. Similar to EGR problems, the DPF can become clogged up from city driving where the car does not get up to temperature.

The whole reason the Diesel Particulate Filter came along was to clean up the diesel car image (Euro 5 Emissions, 2009). Emissions from diesel cars are a big concern worldwide and thanks to the DPF technology, diesel cars are much cleaner.

DPF’s are great for the environment and so forth, however they are a right pain when they go wrong. DPF regeneration, repairs and new replacements are seriously expensive and can lead to some vehicles becoming scrapped.

How does a DPF Work in Diesel Cars?

The Diesel Particulate Filter traps the harmful diesel gases that gets cleaned regularly by a process called DPF regeneration. The collected diesel soot particles are burnt off at high temperatures, which results in an “ash-like” after product. After the regenerating of the DPF, it can now restart the cycle of collecting harmful exhaust gases again.

There are 3 different types of DPF regeneration, which are active, passive and forced.

Active DPF Regeneration

Active reads the back pressure of the exhaust or soot load of the filter to determine when to begin the regeneration. Once initiated, the timing of the fuel injection will alter that will result in the exhaust temperature increasing to burn the soot particles.

During an active DPF regeneration, you may notice the following:

• Higher idle RPM/Speed
• Cooling fan working harder
• Poor fuel economy
• Smells from exhaust
• Engine note change

Passive DPF Regeneration

Passive will take place once the exhaust reaches optimum temperatures where the regeneration will automatically begin. The exhaust will reach these temperatures will occur mostly on prolonged highway driving. Manufacturers that use a passive form of regeneration typically install a oxidizing catalytic converter near the engine to increase the temperature.

Forced DPF Regeneration

Forced is where the Active regeneration could not occur that has resulted in the soot levels reaching 70% and above. The diesel car will enter limp mode and will require a car diagnostic tool to force the regeneration. Its important that this is done as soon as possible because once the car reaches 85% soot level, the DPF will need to be removed and cleaned.

What causes DPF failure?

Sadly DPF’s do fail and many diesel car owners do not realize how they are causing a blocked DPF. The main reason for DPF’s failing is due to car owners not doing enough miles and driving too frequently in city areas.

How long until a DPF will fail is hard to tell because some manufacturers have had to replace some in the first 3 years and some never. The most common reasons for DPF failures are:

• Short journeys where the engine doesn’t reach optimum operating temperature
• Clogged EGR Valve increasing diesel soot passed to the DPF
• Faulty fuel injectors sending too much fuel to the air/fuel mixture
• Incorrect engine oil upon servicing the car – (Low Ash + Low Sulphur required for DPF Cars)
• Turbo failing with oil dripping into the DPF
• High mileage car that will find regeneration harder

Symptoms of a Block DPF Filter

As the majority of DPF’s are installed on newer cars, you will more than likely have a trip computer. Error codes such as the DPF light or EML (Engine Management Light) will be the first symptoms of a failing DPF.

However, sometimes these warning lights can be false alarms and you should try clearing the fault using an OBD2 diagnostic tool. If the warning light continue to display, you will notice the following symptoms:

• Loss of power
• Reduced fuel economy
• Poor throttle response
• Harder or failure to start
• Limp mode (most likely)
• Bad smells

How to Clear a Blocked DPF and Keep it Clean

The cost of cleaning or replacing your DPF sounds scary but you can forget this following some simple driving habits. The main reason DPF’s get blocked is due to short trips and town driving. With that in mind, here are 5 ways to fix a blocked DPF:

1. Drive Faster. If you are driving slowly everywhere in your large diesel, the DPF will become blocked. Increase your speed and plant your foot to floor to when accelerating to increase exhaust temperature and clear soot levels.
2. Increase Your RPM. If the DPF light is on, your best bet is to drive at high RPM’s for a prolonged period until the warning lights turn off. This will increase the gases going through the DPF, thus clearing it and increasing the temperature.
3. Avoid City Centers. If possible, you should avoid slow traffic where possible, especially if you are nearing your DPF limit or have the light currently on.
4. Check EGR Valve. If  you have problems with your EGR valve, it will be even harder to clear the DPF. Fix the EGR issue and then try the other steps.
5. Use High Quality Fuel. Premium fuels or diesel fuel cleaners include fuel additives that help burn off harmful particles.

If you are currently in limp home mode, driving at high RPM (step 2) will be your best chance of getting out of limp mode. Once you have normal power, go for a long fast drive on high quality fuel. If the issue remains the next day, get your error codes read by a diagnostic tool.

For those that live in city areas or get stuck in traffic on a regular basis, it’s hard to keep the DPF clean. However, there are many highly rated DPF cleaners that can assist with keeping the filter clean. They are able to do this lowering the temperature required for regeneration, which helps to clear the clogged filter.

Remove the DPF from the Exhaust System

The DPF delete is an appealing aspect if  you are having issues with your DPF. It is true, without a DPF, you will have no issues and in fact, your performance will increase with a remap or tuning of the ECU.

However, the DPF removal may be illegal is your country and it will cause more environmental damage. Although the latter will not be your biggest concern.

Have You Bought The Wrong Car?

The cost of cleaning or replacing your DPF can be expensive. For the majority of DPF’s, if you are in the region of 70 to 85% it will be eligible to be cleaned. Any higher than 85%, the DPF will need to be replaced with a new system.

Many people bought diesels as it was marketed as the “fuel for saving the planet”. However, they did not bet on having issues such as DPF failure on relatively new cars costing thousands.

It is not the Diesel Particulate Filters fault the majority of the time. Its your driving habits as the car owner and lack of knowledge with modern diesel cars.

If you are driving a few miles each day, your DPF will eventually give up and repair bills will start piling up. A gasoline engine is perfect for short journeys and equally as efficient on fuel.

While it’s not exactly difficult to replace a turbocharger, the process requires a moderate amount of patience, expertise, and a host of tools.

Also, the procedures in replacing a turbocharger will vary from one vehicle to the next. It also depends on the type of motor or if you’re dealing with a diesel car or truck.

What are the signs and symptoms of a faulty turbocharger?

Turbochargers are a forced-induction, turbine-driven device that pumps extra air inside the engine. Turbos are powered by turbines that spin via the motor’s exhaust gasses. When talking about internal combustion motors, more air means more power. Forcing the engine to ingest more compressed air (and fuel), the engine produces higher amounts of power and torque.

When something goes wrong with the turbo, performance issues may crop up including:

1. Slow acceleration.

Since the primary function of a turbocharger is to produce more power, a broken or failing turbo results in a lack of power and acceleration. If your car accelerates slower than it used to be, you might be dealing with a bad turbo.

2. Illuminated check engine light.

In most cases, a bad or failing turbocharger will illuminate the check engine light or engine warning light in the console. However, the check engine light can mean many things. Small cracks in the turbo housing may allow the oil to leak into the exhaust system. When this happens, the problem is manifested by thick exhaust plumes. It’s also a sign of a bad turbo.

What causes turbo failures?

When a turbo goes bad, the first thing you need to do is to locate the source of the problem. You see, turbos don’t go deteriorate without reason. In most cases, a turbocharger failure is caused by other factors than normal wear and tear.

• Oil starvation is the primary cause of turbocharger failures.
  The oil that protects engine parts is also responsible for protecting the internal components of a turbocharger. As the main shaft rotates to an average of 4,000 rotations per second, there’s a massive buildup of heat in the assembly. As such, it needs proper amounts of clean oil to reduce friction and heat buildup in the shaft assembly. If there’s no oil due to blockages in the oil feed pipe, the turbo is destined for early death.

• Dirty or contaminated oil can also be blamed for premature turbocharger damage.
  Dirty oil contains massive amounts of dirt, gunk, debris, and/or metallic contaminants – things that a turbocharger doesn’t like. Contaminants or metal filings suspended in dirty oil can scar or scratch the bearings on the main shaft. This affects the performance and service life of the turbo.

• Repeated ‘hot stops.’
  This especially holds true for high-performance turbocharged vehicles. Hot stops occur when you turn off the engine abruptly without allowing the turbocharger to cool. Since the turbocharger depends on a steady supply of clean oil for cooling, shutting off the engine will leave the turbo starving for oil. If the main shaft is still hot and is resting on a particular area, it can bend and cause an imbalance in the entire system.

5 things to remember when replacing a turbocharger

Dealing with a bad turbo? It’s not the end of the world. Here are some important tips to remember when replacing the turbo in your vehicle.

1. Purchase the correct part.

It doesn’t matter if you’re buying an OEM, replacement, or aftermarket part. The important thing is to buy the correct turbo for your vehicle. Installing the wrong part can lead to serious consequences. Remove the old turbo from your engine and check the nameplate. You should determine the turbo model, part number, and/or the vehicle parts number before buying a new turbo. If you don’t know what turbocharger your car uses, start here.

2. Replace the air filter, oil filter, fuel filter, and the engine oil before installing a new turbo.

Make sure to only use the specified oil grade for your vehicle. Using the wrong type of oil may also lead to engine and turbo damage later on. Your Owner’s Manual will tell you the correct grade to use.

3. Double-check the air cleaner housing and the air filter.

Make sure there are no foreign objects, contaminants, or debris.

5. Check and double-check the oil supply and drain hoses before installing a new turbocharger.

Remember that oil hoses should be clean and free from cracks or damage to ensure a steady supply of oil during operation.
