What are the causes of P0299 Trouble Code?

If the ECU detects a low boost or underboost condition, it will trigger the check engine light and the P0299 will display on your OBD2 scanner. It will also revert to limp mode to protect the engine from further damage. And as you likely know, limp mode is not good because this means a serious lack of engine performance.

The potential causes are many. Here’s the most common causes of this DTC:

In certain Ford vehicles, this trouble code stem from sticking VGT vanes, a faulty VGT actuator, EGR system fault, or a faulty injector control pressure (ICP) sensor.

Generally speaking, the P0299 code is most likely caused by a broken or failing turbocharger or supercharger. Other causes include a bad boost pressure sensor or a vacuum leak in the system. But I saw a crazy instance where this trouble code was triggered by low oil pressure, which can instantly be solved by filling the engine with the proper amount of oil!

What are the symptoms of P0299 DTC?

The first symptom is an illuminated check engine light. If the ECU is in limp mode, you will notice a lack of power and acceleration. If the problem is caused by a faulty or failing turbo or supercharger, you will hear faint and distinct mechanical noises emanating from the turbo.

This code should be taken seriously.

Neglecting the symptoms may damage the catalytic converter or engine, which will potentially cost a ton of money to fix.

How much does it cost to fix P0299 fault?

It really depends on the severity of the issue. Here’s a quick reference (Note: due to rising mechanic labor rates, we have just revised these cost estimates as of November 2023):

If you can fix this code yourself, you’ll save a ton of money. Watch that video above from Dre Dan and you might find fixing this fault is cheaper than expected!

If the problem is caused by air leaks or air restrictions in the intake system, replacing a couple of hoses won’t cost a lot of money.

However, the same can’t be said if the problem is caused by a broken turbo or supercharger. Replacing turbo parts will cost thousands in parts and labor, not to mention the associated cost of tuning the vehicle to ensure a reliable fix.

But if the problem is caused by trivial issues such as lack of oil pressure, simply adding a quart or two of high-quality motor oil will correct the fault. In some extreme cases, replacing the oil pump should also fix the problem, but this will cost more money than buying a can of oil.

Turbocharged vehicles are making a comeback in the quest to improve fuel economy and reduce emissions. However, force-fed motors require more maintenance and more expensive to diagnose and repair. Keep this in mind when dealing with a P0299 code in your turbocharged vehicle.

The technical definition of the P0008 OBD2 Generic Trouble Code is Engine Positions System Performance Bank 1.

Based on our experience, this code is mostly seen in GM, Cadillac, Buick, Suzuki, and Holden vehicles. This trouble code is specifically associated to a misalignment between both camshafts in bank 1 and the engine crankshaft.

The P0008 code is also related to other generic powertrain codes like P0009, P0017, and P0019. Once the ECM detects a misalignment in the idler sprocket in either bank or at the crankshaft, the check engine light (MIL) is triggered immediately.

P0008 is related to the Engine Position System Performance. It typically indicates an issue with the camshaft and crankshaft position sensors or the timing chain. The OBD-II system has detected that there is a malfunction in the system that controls the relationship between the camshaft and crankshaft. • P = Powertrain (Engine or Drive Train)

The first digit in the error code will signify if the code is generic or manufacturer specific:

• 0, 1, and 2 = Air/fuel mixture

The third number means specific codes for the engine

• 08 = Camshafts in bank 1 and the engine crankshaft

Since the P0008 OBD2 Trouble Code is related to the mechanical timing of the engine, the problem is mostly triggered by worn out timing components. This includes the timing chains, gears, and chain guides. It can also mean a bad or worn-out crankshaft reluctor wheel. The technical definition of P0038 code is: Oxygen Sensor Heater Control Circuit High in Bank 1 Sensor 2

With that being said, the code refers to a fault or problem in the heating control circuits of the O2 sensor (HO2S). This code is closely related to P0037 which is an error caused by a low circuit. On the other hand, P0038 is a circuit high input code. Take note that most problems associated with high input codes are related to excessive voltages in the system or faulty alternators.

This is the reason why this DTC (Diagnostic Trouble Code) should be handled by a professional mechanic. In most cases, the check engine light is triggered by the O2 sensor due to short circuits in the vehicle charging system.

Most of the time, the problem has nothing to do with broken or faulty heated oxygen sensors. The P0038 code is most likely caused by faulty or burnt wiring, which has nothing to do with the sensor per se. Since the O2 sensor and related wiring are located close to the exhaust, it is not uncommon for the wiring to burn or wear out, most especially on older vehicles.

Bad wiring and bad ground connections can cause a variety of short circuits in the system, which will also trigger the check engine light. And in some cases, blown fuses in the heater control circuit are the main causes of a P0038 trouble code.

What are the symptoms of P0038 code?

The symptoms will vary wildly. Some vehicles will have a rich running condition while some may constantly run lean. The P0038 code also means reduced engine power and rough idling. It is not uncommon to see black smoke in the tailpipe along with the presence of a check engine light.

Hard starting is also a common symptom of the DTC. But in the absence of engine and idling issues, the first thing you might notice is reduced fuel economy and a check engine light. If you notice problems with the exhaust system (such as unnecessary exhaust noise), it can also cause the P0038 OBD2 code to pop up after scanning the CPU.

How much does it cost to fix P0038 code?

It’s hard to say until a proper diagnosis is made. Since the P0038 OBD2 Trouble Code can be caused by many issues, the estimated cost to fix the problem will run anywhere from $70 to $200, but this all depends on the make and model of your vehicle AND whether or not you can do the repairs yourself.

Meaning of the P0022 OBD2 Code

The technical definition is: “A” Camshaft Position Timing Over-Retarded Bank 2.

Simply put, this means the camshaft timing is constantly over-retarded.  This code is typically associated with variable valve timing (VVT) systems, which are commonly found in modern engines to optimize performance, fuel efficiency, and emissions.  This problem is most common in vehicles equipped with Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) or variable valve timing (VVT) and often seen in Fords (we saw it on a lot of F-150 with the 5.4), but many other car brands can have this issue.

In layman terms, P0022 is a generic engine code that refers to an issue in the camshaft.

It refers to the A camshaft in bank 2, with ‘A’ camshaft referring to front, left, or intake camshaft depending on engine configuration.

What are the causes of P0022 Fault Code?

When we break down this generic fault code we see that it’s got something to do with the Fuel/Air mixture that the ECM is detecting. In this case, the camshaft is where we’ll be focusing our attention.

 P0022 (Camshaft timing issues)  

The first letter of the fault code will indicate the family. The first digit in the error code will signify if the code is Generic or Manufacturer Specific. The second number means specific areas (Fuel/Air, Ignition, Auxiliary, Engine Idle, Transmission, etc). The third and fourth numbers pinpoint help pinpoint the problem:

This generic DTC can stem from a variety of causes. The most common cause is a stuck oil control valve in the VCT solenoid unit. The OCV or oil control valve can get stuck in the retarded position due to dirty engine oil. Since most VVT units use oil pressure to switch between cam profiles, excessive dirt or sludge in the engine oil can block the oil passages in the valvetrain.

Another cause of the P0022 generic OBD-II error is a damaged cam phaser. This is most commonly seen in older or abused vehicles. Anything that has to do with oil flow problems in the VCT and cam phaser will trigger the check engine light and P0022 DTC.

In some cases, the problem is also caused by incorrect camshaft timing and/or related wiring problems in the intake timing control valve solenoid. And as you might have guessed, this type of problem is best addressed by a competent mechanic.

In general, the 6 most common causes of a P0022 OBD-II code are:

But if the engine is running, you will notice hesitation as you step on the pedal. The motor will also consume excessive fuel resulting in lower fuel mileage. This is accompanied by excessive fumes in the exhaust along with a rough or inconsistent idling. In some cases, the engine will stall completely for no apparent reason.

However, the symptoms will vary depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

How much does it cost to fix P0022 Generic Code?

(Note: We have updated these costs for 2023) – If you’re lucky, the problem can be addressed with a basic oil change, which will cost anywhere from $40 to $60 including labor and materials. If your vehicle is equipped with VVT or variable valve timing, regular oil changes are critical to good engine health, especially in high-mileage applications. The same holds true if the issue stems from a wiring problem, which won’t cost a ton of money to resolve, usually around $100 – $150.

But if the DTC is caused by a broken or faulty timing valve control (VCT) solenoid, the cost of fixing the problem will cost hundreds of dollars especially if you have to take it to a mechanic. This repair can easily cost $500 or more, depending on the make and model of your vehicle.

The best first steps is to check the condition of the engine oil and replace if necessary. After that, check the VCT Solenoid, the wiring harness in the solenoid valve, and check for frayed or broken connections.

The technical definition of P0300 is: Random or Multiple Cylinder Misfire

Depending on how this fault is manifested via the check engine light, it could mean one of two things:

1. Engine RPM affected (increasing or decreasing) by 2% 
If the misfire changes the engine revolution by 2 percent, the check engine light illuminates along with the P0300 code.

2. Engine RPM affected (increasing or decreasing) by 10%
The check engine light will illuminate and blink repeatedly. Of course, this feature depends on the make and model of your vehicle. But if for some reason the check engine light blinks while you’re driving (instead of simply turning ON or Illuminating steadily, it is a sign of a serious misfire or engine problem.

Take note that P0300 is an indication of multiple and/or random misfires across multiple cylinders.

Unfortunately, the P0300 DTC can be triggered by many factors! Here’s the most common causes and what to start checking first:

1. Spark Plugs and Wires – grab your socket wrench and pull out the plugs and make sure there’s no corrosion or oil on the threads.

   

2. Vacuum Leaks – try testing for leaks with a cigar!
3. Fuel Pump or Fuel Filter – if the filter is clogged or dirty it can affect fuel flow and trigger this code. I like to replace the fuel filter first because it’s cheap.

How much does it cost to fix a P0300 fault?

Since the fault is triggered by many possible causes, the cost of fixing the problem will vary. By nature this fault is random which makes it harder to isolate.

A competent mechanic will scan the ECU to confirm the P0300 trouble. The freeze frame data should be obtained before erasing the trouble code prior to making a test drive.

If the P0300 code is back after the test drive, the first thing to check is the spark plugs and spark plug wires. A decent set of spark plugs will cost anywhere from $20 all the way to $120 per set. It is also a good idea to check the spark plug wires and replace when necessary.

If the problem is caused by faulty or leaking injectors, you can expect to spend $300 – $1,000 for a complete repair.

The most basic thing to check is the turbo boost pressure sensor A. If the sensor is clogged, dirty, or contaminated, it is enough to trigger this generic trouble code. It can also mean the turbo boost sensor is slow to react. If this is the case, replacing the boost sensor will usually correct the issue and clear the check engine light.

But if the sensor is operating within the predetermined values, this generic DTC can be blamed on a vacuum leak in the intake manifold. In some cases, the trouble code can be initiated by a clogged air filter or stuck wastegate valve.

It’s also associated with turbo issues, problems in the exhaust manifold, bad intercooler, turbocharger bearing failure, shorted sensor wiring, and oil leaks in the turbocharger. And since the symptoms will vary, it is always best to consult a competent mechanic to trace the source of the problem.
