The simple pleasure of driving with a cool breeze from an air conditioner on a hot day can quickly be dampened when your vehicle’s air conditioning system begins to emit a high-pitched sound. This troubling noise could be indicative of a range of potential problems, each associated with different components of the air conditioning system. By understanding the varying types of weird noises (hissing, rattling, clicking, or squeaking) an air conditioner can make along with how to identify them, you can be more proactive about diagnosing the issue and effective at preventing lasting damage to your vehicle. It’s important to know how to decipher what the grinding, hissing, rattling or high-pitched sounds could mean regarding your vehicle’s health.

Identifying Air Conditioner Noise

Decoding The Sounds From Your Car’s Air Conditioner

The air conditioning system in a car is a technological masterpiece, communicating in its unique language. Just like the beep of a computer or the whir of a hard drive; your car’s air conditioner’s sounds convey crucial aspects about its current state. By learning to read the signs, we can drastically improve both the system’s performance and its lifespan.

A smoothly working air conditioning system typically makes a soft humming sound. This is the blend of the compressor, blower motor, and condenser fan at work. However, any deviation from this expected noise could indicate an issue needing attention.

Clicking or Ticking Sounds – Usually, a clicking or ticking sound signifies a potential issue with the AC unit’s compressor or the compressor clutch. It could imply that the compressor is struggling to engage due to an electrical problem or an internal problem.

Rattling or Banging Noises – If your AC is making rattling or banging noises, it’s possible you’re dealing with a loose or disconnected part. A rattling sound can also suggest that your compressor is aging and needs to be replaced.

Hissing or Bubbling – These sounds are reminiscent of a refrigerant leak. The noise often comes from the refrigerant escaping from tiny holes in the coils. Left untreated, low refrigerant levels can hamper the efficiency of your system and lead to further damage.

Humming or Buzzing – A humming noise that persists when the air conditioner is running could mean there’s an electrical issue at play. It can also suggest a failing motor or a problem with the condenser. If the noise turns significantly louder, the air conditioning unit might be dealing with more severe issues, such as a compressor failure.

Squealing or Screeching – These loud noises usually come from the belt that connects the engine to the AC compressor. When this belt becomes loose, worn-out, or misaligned, it generates a high-pitched squealing or screeching sound as the engine runs.

Engaging with technology is one thing, understanding its language and behavior is another. Remember, catching early symptoms of potential issues will help curtail larger issues down the road.

This form of proactive problem-solving through technology is what allows us to be more efficient. And as self-respecting nerds in the auto mechanic world, nothing engages us more than a car’s engine and components operating at its peak potential with a bit of careful listening and logical troubleshooting.

Remember, while understanding these sounds is helpful, it’s normally best to get a professional mechanic to confirm and fix these issues if you can’t figure it out on your own. Not just because they have the right tools, but because sometimes the problems can be a lot subtler and technical than our listening skills might suggest.

Steps for Diagnosing Air Conditioner Problems

Investigating High-Pitched Noise from Your Car Air Conditioner: Practical Steps

As car enthusiasts, we’re almost always intrigued by challenges. Whether it’s a software puzzle, a hardware hiccup, or something beyond our screens–like a car’s air conditioner making a high-pitched noise, for instance. Our rational and analytical nature drives us to explore, learn, and conquer. So, let’s cut straight to the chase and dive into how we can self-diagnose the weird noises emanating from a car’s air conditioner.

Step 1: Initial Observation

Silence everything within your surroundings or go to a quiet location. Turn the car engine and AC system on. Take note of the conditions under which the high-pitched noise occurs: Is it constant or intermittent? Does it appear only when the car is accelerating, or does it persist even when idle?

Step 2: Source Identification

Pinpoint the exact source of the noise. By opening your car’s hood while the engine is running and air conditioning is on, it can help provide a clearer indication of where the noise originates. Be cautious when doing this, noting that the car fan can pose a significant safety hazard.

Step 3: Blower Motor Assessment

The cause of a high-pitched noise could be a failing blower motor — a component responsible for pushing air through your A/C vents. To check, set your A/C to the highest setting and listen for changes in the pitch. If the high-pitched noise shifts with changes in the speed setting, it’s a clear sign the blower motor may be problematic.

Step 4: Check for External Blockage

Look for debris, such as leaves or small twigs that may have lodged in the vent and are impeding the fan, causing it to emit a high-pitched noise. Be mindful, turning the blower off before examining or removing any blockage.

Step 5: Inspect the Cabin Air Filter

A clogged cabin air filter can strain the blower motor, affecting its function and generating high-pitched noise. A visual examination of the air filter can reveal if it’s dirty and needs replacement.

Step 6: Analyze the AC Compressor

If it’s not the blower motor, the AC compressor might be the culprit. Listen for the high-pitched noise when the AC compressor cycles on and off. If the noise coincides with the compressor’s operation, it might be wearing out.

While these steps can help demystify a high-pitched noise, it’s crucial to not rule out the need for professional mechanics. They are equipped with the knowledge, tools, and experience to conduct a comprehensive diagnosis and deliver an optimal solution. Embracing tech does not necessarily mean forgoing expert help. When we operate within our limits, we make the most of automation and technology.

Solutions for Air Conditioner Noise in Your Car

Encountering a piercing or high-pitched noise from your car’s air conditioner can be a puzzling challenge, promising deep dives into technological depths that might initially appear daunting. However, with sound observation and analysis combined with a targeted, methodical approach, it proves manageable.

Step 1 – Initial Observation

Begin by identifying when the noise occurs. Is it only when the air conditioning is activated? Does it persist when the air conditioner is switched off? These observations can help pinpoint whether the non-conforming sound is specifically tied to the air conditioner.

Step 2 – Source Identification

The perceived point of origin for the noise can narrow down potential causes. If the sound seems concentrated near the dash, it is logical to consider internal components such as the blower motor or the air conditioning unit’s compressor. On the other hand, if it seems to emanate from underneath the hood, investigating the compressor, clutch, or belts may be in order.

Step 3 – How to Fix a Blower Motor Issue

A faulty blower motor can produce high-pitched whining or grinding sounds. Be sure to investigate this component thoroughly. Often, the problem can be resolved by lubricating the blower motor or replacing worn-out bearings that could be causing the noise.

Step 4 – How to Clear External Blockage

Excessive noise could be the outcome of external blockage hindering the air flow. Examine the exterior of the compressor and the condenser for any debris, leaves or remnants that might be causing the problem. Careful removal of these residues might be all the correction needed.

Step 5 – Do You Need to Replace the Cabin Air Filter?

The cabin air filter’s role is to keep pollutants like dust and debris from entering the vehicle’s interior through the air conditioning system. A clogged filter can pose significant strain on the system, leading to noises. At this juncture, it is imperative to assess the filter condition and replace it if necessary. This not a very expensive process. Most cabin air filters cost less than $20. You can compare prices here.

Step 6: Is it the AC Compressor? It Might be Time to Call a Mechanic (This Can Be Expensive!)

Finally, the air conditioner’s heart – the compressor – which can wear down over time or due to insufficient oil lubrication, leading to a high-pitched noise. Keep an eye for any signs of wear and tear, oil leakage, damage or weak seals.

Consequently, while resolving high-pitched air conditioner noises might test the limits of your adventurous technical spirit, it is essential to acknowledge the final checkpoint of the troubleshooting journey – the trained and equipped professional mechanic. Armed with the right tools, knowledge and experience, they can facilitate prompt and accurate diagnosis, providing a complete resolution rather than just treating specific symptoms.

Here’s the bad news: Depending on the make and model of your vehicle, replacing the A/C compressor can cost upwards of $1200 – $1500. This includes parts and labor.

Remember, while technology’s allure lies in its complexity and potential for problem-solving, a wise car enthusiast knows just when to call in expert reinforcements. Certain car repairs like this one are often best left in the hands of seasoned professionals.

The key to maintaining your car’s air conditioner and ensuring its longevity lies in your ability to identify common noises and understand the cause behind them. Determining the source of the noise, the inspection procedure of compressor, blower motor, cabin filter, and other related parts can make a significant difference. Implementing effective solutions such as immediate replacement of worn-out components or a possibly an A/C system recharge can help keep these disruptive noises at bay, thus sustaining your driving comfort and maintaining the overall health of your vehicle. Remember, a weird noise from your air conditioner is more than just a nuisance – it’s a call to action.

Few names in the automotive industry carry the reputation of the “Duramax” diesel engine. If you’re a Chevy or GMC truck enthusiast, then you’ve undoubtedly encountered this engine. The Duramax engine isn’t just another diesel powerplant; it’s a symbol representing relentless power.

Duramax engines have evolved to meet stricter emissions standards without sacrificing their impressive power. Of course, this power generates a lot of heat, so eventually, you’ll have to replace the thermostat. We’ll take a close look at the process involved in 2015 and 2016 Duramax thermostat replacement.

What Causes Thermostat Failure in the Duramax Engine?

A thermostat is a relatively simple mechanical component, but it can experience wear and tear over time. Understanding the common causes of thermostat failure will help you identify when it’s time to change out this crucial component. It also helps you identify situations when other engine problems might be causing damage to the thermostat.

Time

Not even your Duramax powered truck can outrun time. The constant exposure to temperature fluctuations causes the valve to open and close repeatedly. This repeated motion causes the thermostat to become less responsive when regulating engine temperature.

Stuck Closed

One of the most common problems with thermostats is when they get stuck in the closed position. This means that the thermostat valve doesn’t let water pass once the engine warms up. Common causes of the valve being stuck closed is the accumulation of debris.

Stuck Open

On the other end of the spectrum, thermostats also get stuck open. This means that the valve remains open, even while the engine is warming. While it might not lead to immediate overheating, it results in poor fuel efficiency and increased engine wear because the engine never reaches its optimal operating temperature.

Corrosion

Exposure to coolant causes corrosion in the thermostat housing. Corrosion affects the thermostat’s ability to open and close properly. The most common cause of corrosion is neglecting to change the coolant at recommended intervals.

Regular maintenance, including coolant changes and inspections, help prevent thermostat problems and ensure that your engine operates at the right temperature. If you suspect thermostat issues, it’s essential to address them promptly to prevent potential engine damage. If you are unsure, one way to nail down the actual issues going on in your engine is by using an OBD2 scanner.

…And, our recommendation of the best aftermarket replacement thermostat for the Duramax engine is:

Step 2: Locate the Thermostat Housing

The thermostat housing is usually located near the front of the engine. It’s connected to the upper radiator hose. On the 2015 and 2016 Duramax models, it’s usually on the driver’s side. You may need to remove the air intake duct or other components to access it.

Step 3: Drain the Coolant

Place a drain pan underneath the vehicle. Then find the radiator drain valve, usually located on the lower driver’s side of the radiator. Open the valve and allow the coolant to drain into the pan. Be sure to dispose of the used coolant properly.

Step 4: Remove the Thermostat Housing

Carefully remove the bolts holding the thermostat housing in place. Keep these bolts in a safe place, as you’ll need them for reinstallation. Once the housing is loose, use pliers to disconnect the upper radiator hose from the housing. Some hose clamp pliers can be handy for this step.

Step 5: Replace the Thermostat

Inside the housing, you’ll find the old thermostat. Carefully remove it. Pay close attention to its orientation. Replace it with the new thermostat, ensuring it’s installed in the same position as the old one. Make sure to use the new gasket as well.

Step 6: Reassemble and Refill

Reattach the upper radiator hose to the thermostat housing and secure it with the hose clamp. Then, reattach the thermostat housing using the bolts you removed earlier. Tighten the bolts securely, but don’t overtighten since that damages the housing. This is a tricky step so be extra careful.

Step 7: Refill Coolant

Refill the radiator with fresh coolant. Be sure to consult your owner’s manual for the correct type and mixture of coolant for your Duramax engine. Fill it until it’s at the proper level.

Step 8: Bleed the System

Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes with the radiator cap off. This removes air bubbles that form in the coolant. As the engine warms up, you’ll see the coolant level drop. Continue adding coolant until it stabilizes at the correct level.

Step 9: Check for Leaks

After turning off the engine, check for any coolant leaks around the thermostat housing and radiator connections. If you spot any leaks, address them before driving the vehicle.

Final Thoughts

2015 and 2016 thermostat replacement isn’t too difficult of a task. The tricky step is ensuring that you don’t overtighten the new thermostat. Also, keep in mind that proper maintenance gives your new thermostat a longer lifespan. If you find yourself replacing your thermostat too often, then there might be a problem with another part of the engine. In that scenario, you’ll need to take your truck into a licensed mechanic to track down the problem.

It’s the perfect answer for removing wiper blade scratches and other defects upon your car’s glass surfaces.

Many car owners don’t realize that you can actually polish defects from the glass fairly easily. However, before attempting to apply any product, you will want to ensure that the glass is cleaned to the best of your abilities beforehand.

Auto Glass Polish Comparison

Cleaners may not be able to remove the strongest of water spots, dirt or scratches. Therefore, the next step is to get a car window polish that removes these defects. Glass polishes have additional additives as opposed to a paint polish that provide superior glass cutting qualities.

The glass of your car is often neglected when compared to the bodywork, which opens up a huge opportunity to improve your detailing game. Auto glass that’s defect free can make a huge difference to the overall appearance of the car and it won’t go unnoticed.

Rubbing compound that contains cerium oxide

If you have surface damage in the form of a chip or crack, you will require a windshield repair kit. Once you have filled the gap with an advanced resin formula, it’s then ready for glass polish for a smoother finish to the repair.

To help you make an informed buying decision, we have produced the below buying guide regarding glass polish for your car.

Type of Scratch

The first thing that you need to focus on is to determine what type of scratch it is that you are dealing with. You can do this my simply running your finger over the scratch and you will be able to tell if it’s a simple surface scratch or a much deeper scratch.

If it’s a simple surface scratch, it will feel smooth when you touch it and this is the type of scratch can be removed with ease. You will be able to remove these types of scratches with a basic glass polish.

For deeper scratches, your finger will go into the scratch and this requires a more specialized windshield scratch repair. This involves various fine sand paper and an abrasive glass polishing compound. Depending upon how severe the scratch is to the glass may result in a new windshield or side window.

How To Remove Scratches From Windshield

Removing scratches from your windshield is very similar to using a car scratch remover product. You may be lucky enough to remove minor scratches with a glass polishing compound but if not, you will require a complete glass polish kit. This kit will contain all of the items that you will need to accomplish your scratch removal process.

In order to remove scratches from your windshield, follow the below steps.

Clean The Windshield

Wash the windshield as thoroughly as you can before doing anything else. You will want to use an auto glass cleaner to thoroughly clean the glass. You don’t want to put the glass polishing compound on the windshield with dirt on it.

Once you have used the cleaner, make sure to rinse any residue left on the glass. You want to be sure that once you add the compound to the windshield, you don’t have any dirt trapped underneath it.

Adding The Glass Polishing Compound

Once the windshield is clean and dry, you can then add the compound to it. The compound should look like toothpaste and be easy to rub into the scratch. After applying the compound, you will need to spray it with water and rub the it gently with a soft cloth. Try not to apply too much pressure as you do this, otherwise, you may push the compound back out of the scratch in the glass.

After you have successfully applied the compound to your windshield and the scratch, you will then need to let it dry. Make sure to follow the instructions on the package to help you understand just how long you need to let it dry.

Once, it has completely dried, you will then need to wash the windshield and dry it with a car drying towel.

Assessing The Result

Once you have completed this process, you should have a scratch-free windshield. If the scratches remain, you can attempt to reapply the glass polishing compound but it may be that the scratch is too deep to repair.

Level of Abrasive Qualities

When researching through the different types of glass polish products, you will want to check the strength of the formula. Some may only be suitable for water spots and light scratches, which won’t be ideal for those tackling deep scratches to their windshield.

Conclusion

Depending upon the age of your vehicle, windshield scratches are something that’s fairly common. Whether they are caused by your wiper blades or even the use of windshield covers, most can be easily removed using a glass polish.

All of our recommendations cover basic glass polishing compound products to complete windshield scratch repair kits. Depending upon the severity of the scratch, you may or may not be able to remove it. Therefore, it’s important that you asses any damage before purchasing any polishes.

3M is a global brand that have a great reputation for automotive bodywork and detailing products. Their double-sided adhesive tape follows their great reputation and it’s an alternative to a glue and also has the added benefit of being easily removable without causing any damage.

According to the brand, their tape uses the same technology that’s used upon airplanes and skyscrapers. Therefore securing plastic trim and other car parts is relatively easy for the tape. To apply it, all that’s needed is for you to cut it to the specified length, remove the liner to expose the adhesive and finally hold it firmly in place.

Other features the 3M Double Sided Tape include:

Easy to apply with no special tools

Forms a strong bond instantly

Can be cut to length to reduce wastage

Leaves no residue once removed

Available in a range of sizes

If you require a glue that can be removed at a later date, we highly recommend the 3M Double Sided Tape. It’s ideal for sticking car trim, spoilers, license plates and so much more. For larger car parts such as bumpers or anything that needs permanent bonding, we’d recommend choosing the Tiger Seal alternative above.

Plastic Car Glue Buying Guide

From broken clips to buttons, having glue for car plastics readily available can save the day. Domestic glues aren’t up to the job of withstanding the punishment and environmental factors that a car will go through on the road. Therefore, there are plenty of specialized adhesives on the market that provide a strong bond that’s designed for automotive use.

To help you make an informed buying decision, we have put together the below buying guide regarding automotive adhesives.

Types of Glue for Plastics

Cyanoacrylate (Super Glue): Works well for bonding rigid plastics.

Epoxy: Effective for bonding various types of plastics, including ABS and PVC.

Plastic cement: Specifically designed for bonding plastic surfaces. It creates a strong bond with certain types of plastics.

Polyurethane adhesive: Suitable for bonding a wide range of plastics.

Application of Car Glue

Glue for plastic car trims can come in a range of types that are designed for specific jobs. For example, glue for car headliners is normally in the form of an aerosol whereas spoilers require a stronger adhesive from a tube.

Therefore, ensuring that the glue you choose is up to the job of sticking plastic trim to your car is very important. The wrong glue can become a nightmare to apply correctly or remove when you need to take the part off.

After you’ve applied the glue, it’s important that you allow it to settle before taking your car out on the road. We strongly recommend using tape to hold the car part in place (as shown below) to ensure that it sticks correctly.

Permanent or Semi-Permanent

When it comes to repairing items such as car bumpers or trims, you will more than likely require a permanent car glue such as the Tiger Seal. However, if you were installing a spoiler that at a later date you may want to remove, it wouldn’t be advised to use a permanent glue. Trying to remove glue such as the Tiger Seal won’t only require a serious amount of effort but may also cause damage to the vehicle.

There are many semi-permanent automotive glues available and our favorite is the 3M double sided tape. Once applied, it forms a strong bond that will be able to withstand the outdoor elements and many years of use. However, it can also be removed when you wish without leaving too much glue residue.

Therefore, before purchasing any glue, you need to decide if it’s going to be permanent or not.

How To Remove Adhesive Residue

The result of removing car parts such as spoilers, plastic trims and body kits is that their may be some tough residue left behind. If this is the case, you need to avoid picking at the residue with or over washing the area because this will can cause damage to your paintwork.

Instead, we would highly recommend investing into a rubbing compound that will easily remove any residue. Most will require use of a car buffer to work in the product but this will be the safest method of removing the residue. If you are struggling to remove the residue, you may require light sanding of the area before polishing.

Conclusion

Gluing plastic car parts back in place is far easier than you would expect. There are now hundreds of automotive adhesives that will be able to withstand all weather conditions and other outdoor elements. All of our recommendations above are the best for specific tasks and are easy to apply without being too messy.

Tip: Always follow the instructions provided by the adhesive manufacturer for the best results. Additionally, it’s a good idea to test the adhesive on a small, inconspicuous area before applying it to the entire project to ensure compatibility and proper bonding.

⛽Are Acuras Expensive to Maintain??🤔

Owning a fantastic vehicle like an Acura comes with many advantages! Being a luxury vehicle division of Honda, Acuras are known for their high performance.

However, you might be wondering how much it costs to repair an Acura or purchase its parts.

In this article, we’ll answer an important question. Are Acuras expensive to maintain?

Different Acura Model Costs Compared

There’s no denying that Acura has released many impressive models to the market throughout the years. But the two most popular ones are the TLX and the MDX.

In the following section, we’ll provide a quick comparison between these two models. We’ll discuss their costs in addition to the costs of their maintenance and repair.

TLX

A fascinating sedan, the first generation of TLX invaded the markets in 2014. With its excellent performance and impeccable design, its easy to see how this sporty and affordable vehicle steals the spotlight.

But how much does it cost and how expensive is this Acura to fix? We’re about to find out.

Purchasing Cost (New and Used)

If you’ve decided to buy a new 2023 TLX Acura, then you should know its price starts at $36,000. This price doesn’t include taxes, license, or destination and handling charge.

As for the destination and handling charge for sedans and SUVs, the cost is $1,025.

When it comes to the accessory, labor, and installation costs, they vary according to your dealer. So, before you buy a new TLX Acura, it’s a good idea to consult your car dealer.

Now, if you think it’s a better option to buy a used TLX, a 2019 model would cost you from $24,000 to $30,000. The prices might vary depending on the mileage.

Maintenance Costs

We’ve taken the liberty to estimate the maintenance costs for the TLX throughout a period of 5 years.

We figured that by the fifth year of an estimated 15,000 miles driven per year, you’d have spent about $4,000 on maintenance.

Common Repair Costs

As for the estimated repair costs, then they’ll be about $800 in five years.

MDX

Another fantastic model is the Acura MDX. This vehicle is a mid-size, three-row luxury crossover, and was released to the market in 2000.

According to Honda, the MDX is the best-selling three-row luxury of all time. With its spacious interior, Hi-Tech performance, and sophisticated design, it has earned this spot.

Purchasing Cost (New and Used)

If you’ve been swept away by the MDX’s performance, then you might be thinking about its price. The 2023 MDX starts at about $48,500.

This price is excluding taxes, accessory, and more details you should discuss with your selected dealer.

However, if this price is too much for you, you might consider purchasing a used 2019 MDX. The cost may range from $32,000 to $36,000 depending on the mileage and the overall condition of the vehicle.

Maintenance Costs

Just like the TLX, we’ll break down the maintenance costs throughout a 5-year duration.

After an estimated driving of 15,000 miles per year, you’d have spent around $4,325 on maintenance.

Common Repair Costs

For the same duration and mileage, your common repair costs would be around $900.

Are Acuras Reliable?

To answer this question, we’ll break down reliability ratings. These ratings compare Acura models to other car brands.

According to some safety tests run on 7 Acura vehicles, 6 had an average score of 9.8 out of 10.

Not only were we impressed by the safety tests, but we also found overall reliability tests to be promising. For instance, the Acura TLX scored 7.8 out of 10 based on 45 pieces of research.

On the other hand, the Acura MDX scored 8.5 out of 10 based on 46 pieces of research. Other models had great results, too, ranging from 7.8 to 8.9 points out of 10.

This should answer your question as yes, Acuras are reliable cars.

Most Common Problems and Repairs With Acuras

To better evaluate your decision to buy an Acura, here are some of the common problems that came with it.

Although it has a high-Reliability Rating, several issues have been reported over the years.

Excessive Oil Consumption

The latest generation of Acura vehicles come equipped with V6 engines. These engines tend to burn through large amounts of oil.

These vehicles have shown signs of needing more oil between Acura’s recommended oil change intervals.

Even though some blame it on the driver’s excessive, there were many complaints about this issue that no one should ignore.

TLX Transmission Slips

In 2015, owners of the Acura TLX had transmission issues. The car would jerk between gears, overhear, and have problems when shifting into park.

TL Cracked Dashboard

Another common problem associated with the Acura TL model is that some owners faced cracks in their dashboards.

This issue had no link to the weather condition or the place in which the car was parked. But it only appeared in the 2004-2008 models.

Having a cracked dashboard can be dangerous when you’re driving. It can break under pressure and render the airbags useless. That’s why many customers have issued complaints.

HandsFreeLink Drains Battery

This Bluetooth feature that allows your Acura to connect to your phone comes with a catch.

No matter how useful this feature could be, some users found that it can still be on even after you’ve exited the car. This means that it can drain your car battery without you knowing.

Conclusion

Acuras have claimed their position as reliable vehicles. They come with improved technology, impressive design, and other awesome features. That’s why you might be tempted to get one.

Whether you choose to buy a new or a used Acura, you should calculate how much they might cost you to fix. This allows you to make the right decision.

In addition to that, it gives you an insight into what to expect through years of driving an Acura.

After you think everything through, it’s your call whether or not to enjoy the luxurious experience of an Acura.

What is KDSS?

KDSS is Toyota’s so-called “Adaptive Suspension” system and stands for Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System. It’s not an entirely different suspension system but rather an additional system to boost performance.

KDSS is essentially a hydraulic system of two pistons attached to the front and rear sway bars respectively. It is a passive system that allows for more wheel articulation offroad but still maintains good traction, stability and body roll mitigation when driving on the street. You basically get the best of both worlds (for the most part).

What does the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System do?

In order to understand what the KDSS does you first need to understand what Sway Bars do.

Sway bars

A sway bar, also known as a stabilizer bar or anti-roll bar, is a component of a vehicle’s suspension system that helps to reduce the amount of body roll or sway that occurs when a vehicle turns or goes over uneven terrain. The sway bar is a metal bar that is connected to the suspension on both sides of the vehicle. There are typically both front and rear sway bars.

When one side of the vehicle’s suspension compresses, the sway bar transfers some of that motion to the opposite side, helping to keep the vehicle level and stable. This improves handling and stability, especially on-road at higher speeds.

The downside to this extra stability is that the suspension cannot articulate or “flex” nearly as much as when it is not connected to the sway bar. This can cause one or even two wheels to come off the ground when driving over extremely uneven terrain. If the vehicle has “open” differentials this will lead to the wheel that is up in the air to spin freely and the one on the ground to not transfer any power to the ground.

KDSS to the off-road rescue!

KDSS helps solve this problem by adding hydraulic cylinders to the front and rear stabilizer bars. These hydraulic pistons send hydraulic fluid back and forth to add or decrease stiffness in the front and rear sway bars. This is an electronically controlled system and is activated automatically whether you’re driving on-road or off-road.

Here’s what body roll in a car looks like. A sway bar/anti-roll bar helps prevent this.
image source Richard Taylor on Flickr

When off-roading, the pistons in the cylinders move freely, sending fluid between front and rear, effectively “unlocking” the stabilizer bars. When one cylinder is compressed, the other one expands, and vice versa allowing the suspension to move with ease and with greater range of motion to maintain tire contact over uneven terrain.

Meanwhile, when driving on-road, both cylinders become fixed, “locking” the stabilizer bars so they simply twist like normal, providing resistance that helps reduce body roll and keeps the vehicle more stable at higher speeds.

Conveniently, KDSS is a totally passive system. This means the driver does not have to manually connect or disconnect the sway bars or even turn the KDSS on or off. It’s electronically controlled and reacts to whatever driving conditions it is experiencing in real-time.

KDSS vs XREAS

So how does the KDSS compare to the XREAS system?

Understanding XREAS

XREAS stands for “Cross Linked Relative Absorber System” and consists of two additional hydraulic dampers located between the left and right rear shocks.

Links the front driver shock absorber to the rear passenger shock absorber and conversely the front passenger shock with the rear driver shock respectively.

Wondering if you have KDSS on your rig? Look for a hydraulic line near the rear strut. – image source Ze26

How XREAS Works

Connected to a high-pressure accumulator filled with nitrogen gas.

System adjusts the resistance of the dampers, controlling body roll and sway during turns or uneven terrain.

Smooth roads lead to reduced resistance for a comfortable ride, while rough roads or aggressive driving result in increased resistance for improved handling and stability.

Comparing XREAS and KDSS

They have never existed on the same vehicle simultaneously.

XREAS focuses on shocks, while KDSS works with sway bars.

Both aim to improve suspension performance.

KDSS is generally preferred for its on-road and off-road benefits and reliability.*

Toyota continues producing KDSS but has stopped producing XREAS.

*This is not a scientifically tested opinion. I am simply parroting the opinions expressed by Toyota owners online.

Which Toyota vehicles have KDSS?

The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) is available on a variety of Toyota models, including:

Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-road (2010-Present)

Lexus GX (2004-Present)

Toyota Land Cruiser (2008-Present)

Toyota FJ Cruiser (2010-2014)

Toyota Prado (2010-current)

It’s worth noting that the KDSS system is optional on some of the above models and is available on certain trims or packages. Additionally, the availability of this system may vary depending on the country or region.

How do I know if I have KDSS?

There are a few ways to determine if your vehicle has the Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) :

Check the vehicle’s documentation: If your vehicle has the KDSS system, it should be listed in the owner’s manual or on the vehicle’s build sheet.

Visually inspect the suspension: The KDSS system uses hydraulic pistons to manipulate the front and rear sway bars. If you look underneath the driver side front end, in front of the wheel, and see the hydraulic ram connected to the top of the sway bar, you’ve got KDSS.

Consult a Toyota dealer: You can visit a Toyota dealer and ask them to check the VIN number of your vehicle. They will be able to tell you if the vehicle has the KDSS system or not.

If you’re still unsure, it’s always best to check with your local Toyota dealer or the Toyota customer service. They will be able to confirm if your vehicle is equipped with the KDSS system.

Should you buy a KDSS 4runner

The current generation of Toyota 4Runners are fantastic vehicles.

If you’re already planning on buying one it will likely serve you very well whether you opt for the KDSS option or not.

If you’re the type of person that likes to do a little more adventurous 4-wheeling and want a bit more performance from your suspension both on-road and off, the KDSS is a good option. Maybe you plan on using your 4Runner as a daily driver and an adventure vehicle to go off-roading every now and then, but have no intention of installing a lift kit or over-sized tires etc., the KDSS is a great factory addition.

However, if you’re a bit more hardcore and plan on adding a lift kit and other aftermarket suspension upgrades, you may want to do a bit of research on how they might affect the KDSS.

KDSS Long term reliability?

The Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System (KDSS) is a relatively new technology and its reliability over long periods of time is not well established yet. However, Toyota is known for producing reliable vehicles and the company’s reputation and history of quality in their products gives an indication that the KDSS system is likely to be reliable.

As with any complex mechanical system, regular maintenance is important to ensure the longevity and reliability of the KDSS system. It is important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended maintenance schedule, including regular inspections and fluid changes as needed.

It’s also important to note that some owners have reported issues with the KDSS system, such as leaks or malfunctioning, and the repair cost can be high. However, these issues don’t seem to be widespread and the majority of owners have reported no issues with the system.

In general, it’s hard to determine the long-term reliability of the KDSS system without more data, but it seems that it is a reliable system and it is expected to be reliable over long periods of time.

Is KDSS worth it?

The KDSS is a great option if you want improved performance but don’t want to modify your vehicle’s suspension system from stock.

Maybe you want to install some sort of lift kit or other aftermarket suspension parts? Let’s compare the costs in rough numbers.

KDSS has a one time upfront cost of about $1750 as an option. These systems can be costly to repair should something go wrong but they seem to be robust.

An aftermarket lift kit can cost anywhere from ~$500, for simply taller springs and shocks, to multiple thousands of dollars depending on just how much modification you want to do. Keep in mind that these off-road centric modifications will not improve the on-road handling of your vehicle (more likely the opposite).

Does KDSS cause a lean?

If the suspension system is left stock and unmolested the KDSS will not cause the car to lean. However, installing a lift kit can cause the vehicle to lean on the driver side (the side where the KDSS system lives) due to changing the suspension’s geometry and increasing the height that the hydraulic piston sits inside the cylinder. The KDSS is basically wanting to pull the driver side of the vehicle down to stock height.

Every driven a car or truck that doesnt have a sway bar? If you have not, imagine putting wheels on a boat and taking it for a spin around the block. Sure it might ‘float’ well, but the turning would be terrible, and on every turn, it would about roll over, right? In this article we’re talking all about sway bars (aka anti-roll bars, anti-sway bars, or stabilizer bars). This single part is responsible for giving you that snappy turn feeling and helping you make hard turns without rolling your ride.

What Is A Sway Bar

The sway bar (anti-roll bar) in a vehicle’s suspension- system keeps your turning snappy and prevents body roll. It is a u-shaped steel bar linked to the vehicle’s control arm or struts and it serves to keep the vehicle stable, especially during turns.

What Do Sway Bars Do?

This is box title

A sway bar counteracts the vehicle’s body lean that follows every time you turn into a corner. This prevents possible roll overs, and gives you supreme traction on the road.

It does this by delivering a level of force to the other side so as to balance things out and reduce body roll. In a way, one could say it evens out weight distribution while cornering.

The stabilizer bar is linked to either the front wheels or the rear wheels although some performance vehicles have a front sway bar and a rear sway bar. When one wheel becomes higher than the opposite wheel during cornering, the sway bar then swoops in to keep things balanced. In some sense, the sway bar is really just a torsion spring because it exists to counter a twisting movement from any side of the vehicle.

Here’s what body roll in a car looks like. A sway bar/anti-roll bar helps prevent this.
image source Richard Taylor on Flickr

Let’s bring it somewhat closer to home-

Imagine you are driving your car and while turning into a corner, you feel your car lean towards one side. Now, that would get you really scared as there is a possibility of the car flipping outright. What the sway bar does in that situation is to deploy some force at the other end and keep things level i.e reduce body roll.

Summarily, a sway bar serves to ensure that your car remains stable even when you are cornering. It also makes for excellent handling and maintains your vehicle’s grip on the road. Given their functions, an anti-sway bar seems like a more fitting name for it than sway bar, don’t you think?

What Are The Types Of Sway Bars?

We mentioned earlier that while most cars have solid u-shaped bars, there are other types of sway bars. Below are four of the most popular sway bars found in many vehicles today:

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

1. Solid Sway Bars

Moog solid sway bar kit – more here

Solid sway bars are the most common type of sway bars. They are u-shaped steel bars that connect the wheel assemblies on the left and right sides of the axle. Much like torsion springs, these anti sway bars twist as you drive around the corners, in a bid to dissipate the extra tension. Solid bars are typically heavy and they can last as long or even longer than the car itself.

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

2. Hollow Sway Bars

BMR Suspension Hollow Adjustable Sway Bar Kit for Mustangs

Hollow Sway bars are also known as tubular sway bars and they are actually very similar to solid bars except for the fact they have hollow insides. To put it simply, hollow sway bars have hollow metal bars on the insides while their solid counterparts of course have solid metal bars.

Contrary to what you may have thought, the hollow sway bars are also very long-lasting and durable. In addition to that, they have as much torsional rigidity as solid sway bars despite having less weight.

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

3. Splined Sway Bars

Coleman “Torque Tough” splined sway bar. These are for hardcore racers!

While most anti sway bars are often u-shaped, splined sway bars are totally straight. A splined sway bar can either be hollow or solid and it actually works the same way a traditional sway bar works. The only difference is that splined sway bars spin directly into the connecting arms.

Many performance/drag racing cars sport splined sway bars because they can withstand loads of torque and are easily adjustable.

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

4. Active Anti-roll Bar System

You may have noticed that all the sway bar types we have mentioned so far are mostly mechanical. The active anti-roll bar system however is an electronic system that features an electronic control unit that helps control it. The system deploys sophisticated sensors and actuators to alter your car’s suspension system and reduce body rolls when turning. It is a much lighter bar than the others and experts say it produces better performances than other types.

We should mention that you won’t find an active sway bar system on just any car as they are mostly used in top-of-the-line vehicles like the Aston Martin DBX, Porsche Cayenne Turbo, Bentley Bentayga, and Audi RS Q8.

Difference Between Sway Bars And Torsion Bars

This is box title

Sway Bars and torsion bars are often confused as the same. However, sway bars and torsion bars do different things. Mainly, the sway bar reduces body roll when you turn vs the torsion bar acts as a spring within the suspension system to absorb bumps in the road.

Sway Bars connect shock mount driver to shock mount passenger

There’s exceptions, but typically you’ll see the sway bar end links connecting near the shock mount base, or near the steering knuckle. It absorbs the tension that inevitably comes with cornering thereby preventing body lean and stopping the car from flipping. It does this through a twisting mechanism similar to that of torsion bars.

Torsion bars connect to the frame

A suspension component that works alone or with the springs to prevent roll. Unlike sway bars, they are welded or bolted to the frame, and run to the suspension arm/a-arm. They were more popular back in the 60s and arent seen very often. You may catch one on a lifted off-road truck. They look like Traction bars.

[su_icon_text icon=”icon: wrench” icon_color=”#00a9e0″]3 Symptoms Of A Bad Sway Bar[/su_icon_text]

We mentioned earlier that sway bars often last as long as the vehicles themselves. However, sway bars have links and bushings that can break, wear out or deteriorate. Anti-roll bar bushings can break bad due to water intrusion(leading to rust), lack of lubrication, and age. Here’s what you should watch out for

The rubber bushings on your sway bar is what usually goes bad.

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

1. Unusual Noises

One of the most common signs of a weak or worn sway bar bushing is rattling and clunking noises especially when the car is going over a bump. It could also be a squeaking noise and if the situation further deteriorates, you could start hearing these noises even when you are driving on flat, bumpless roads.

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

2. Bad Handling / Body Roll

When your sway bar goes bad, the car’s handling will likely take a turn. The handling will feel like a boat rather than the snappiness of a car. This could be a result of weak bar links or deteriorating bushings.

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

3. Obvious Wear

You can also notice a bad sway bar while making a visual inspection of your car parts. The sway bar links will look totally worn out and the rubber bushings on either end of the links will lose their solid, round shape.

While conducting the check, you can hold the links and if they feel loose and move easily, then they are broken. In some cases, the links can be completely disconnected or unfastened from the anti-roll bar.

[/su_panel]

What Happens If Your Sway Bar Breaks While Driving?

It should not pose an immediate or serious threat, especially if you are not doing any hard or fast cornering. The sway bar is most noticeable during hard corners or swerving to dodge an object in the road.

Can You Drive Without A Sway Bar?

Sway bars aren’t of as much importance to a car as brakes, tires, and other such parts. As a matter of fact, they used to be optional vehicle equipment a couple of decades back.

The absence of a sway bar also increases body roll and puts your car at risk(however little) of flipping. This is usually noticed during a sharp turn, like if you had to avoid a deer in the road.

If you do decide to drive without one, we advise that you do it as slowly until you’re comfortable with your vehicle turning more like a boat than a car.

Do Sway Bars Affect Off-roading Performance?

If you have a 4WD off-road vehicle, it may be useful to sometimes disengage the sway bar.

While driving in off-road conditions, the grounds are uneven so you’ll want the vehicle’s wheels to move independently for better traction. Disconnecting the sway bars can help with that because there will be much less pressure on the wheel axles.

For off-roading, we recommend adjustable sway bars, or quick disconnects.

Quick disconnects are awesome for offroad use

Camper Sway Bar

That’s right, even campers and RVs have sway bars. Given the weight of RVs and their susceptibility to wind, sway bars can help improve the suspension and reduce body roll.

Cost To Replace

Sway bars typically do not need replacements as they are very durable and can last the entire lifetime of the vehicle. However, as we have seen before, the sway bar links and bushings can get worn out which means they would need replacements.

For example, bushings on a 2010 Ford Ranger are about $25 bucks (autozone)

If you have a lifted Jeep and want to upgrade to Synergy links with a quick-disconnect, you’re looking at around $215 bucks. (Synergy end links)

If you dont know what you’re doing, leave it to the professionals because you dont want to screw up your suspension components. However, these parts are often easy to replace 🙂

Have you ever found yourself in a position where your car lights wont turn off? We are going to look at the different types of exterior and interior lights. Most common reasons they wont shut off are:

light sensor

faulty grounded wire

bad switches

switch that is stuck in the “on” position

blown fuse

bad relay

daytime headlight/lamps running module.

Let’s start by looking at your car’s exterior lights. Your vehicle has seven sets of exterior lights.

Headlights or Headlamps

The headlight and headlamp provide the same purpose. The ability for the driver to see the road and surrounding area while driving at night, the last thing you want to do is search for the lines on the road.

Your headlights/lamps consist of one system. The low beams and high beams are connected slightly brighter bulbs are used for the high beams.

If they won’t shut off it is typically because of a faulty relay which is a switch that is operated remotely.

If the headlight switch breaks or becomes stuck in the on position your headlights/headlamps will not shut off this can happen using the low beams or high beams.

A temporary fix

A quick solution for disabling the ruined switch is to unhook the battery (negative wire first, then positive wire) and this will turn the light off and prevent your battery from being drained.

If you find that the battery was not the cause of the problem then the wiring needs to be examined. Oftentimes little critters such as mice will move inside under the hoods of vehicles and wreak havoc with your wiring, and the light on the dashboard, doors, the dome light switch, and all the lights.

Other Exterior Lights

There are dozens of lights on your car. Many you may not even realize are there because you have been looking at cars most of your life they are easy to overlook.

Fog Lights

When there is a problem with the fog lights it is usually a problem with the switch or wires. Mechanics suggest cleaning the switch first and if it still doesn’t work then bring it to your dealership for repair or replacement.

Brake Lights

Brake lights that don’t turn off will quickly drain your battery and if you’re driving it will appear that you are “stopping” constantly.

Believe it or not, there are several reasons for your brake lights to remain on. Let’s look at the list below and the cause and repair.

If you do not take care of it the damaged brake lights you run the risk of damaging your brakes and needing new ones which can be dangerous and costly.

Bad spring release in the pedal

Broken brake switch

Bad wiring

Blown bulb

Water in the plastic housing

Bad Spring Release in the Pedal

If the pedal gets stuck in place or there is debris wedged in between the pedal and the switch it will cause the spring release to become damaged and may not work and it is dangerous to drive with a damaged spring release.

Oftentimes you can remedy this problem yourself. Give it a good scrubbing with an old toothbrush to make those contact points shine like new. Then turn the car engine over and pump the pedal a few times. The pedal should return to its original position and the brake lights will turn off.

Broken Brake Switch

The quick and simple fix is to replace the switch. Make use you always disconnect the battery whenever you’re working on a car for obvious safety reasons.

If your car is an older model and you have any issues it’s best to take it to your garage and let the experts do their job so you don’t cause more damage.

Bad Wiring

Rodents enjoy nibbling at the wires in your vehicle if you find chew marks then this is likely the cause of the bad wiring.

You should take the car to the mechanic for repairs. This is more complex than changing a fuse or replacing a light.

Blown Bulb

If you can reach it is easy enough to go to the auto parts store and get a new one and switch it out yourself. if you cannot reach it or find it then you will need assistance from the mechanic. Fixing this problem is inexpensive.

Reverse Lights

These lights let other drivers or pedestrians know you’re going to back up. Usually, when they won’t turn off it is one of three things.

Blown fuse

Bulb

Fixing a Blown Fuse

Find your fuse box and replace the fuse if the lights shut off the problem is solved.

How Do I Fix a Dome Light When it Won’t Turn Off

To turn off the dome light, flip the dashboard light control knob to the lowest position. If, the dash light does not change despite the modification, the switch is likely defective.

Further troubleshooting

When your vehicle inside lights don’t turn off automatically when you close the doors then there is an issue that may be caused by one of the following things. You should check each individually to eliminate a possible problem one by one.

Is the knob adjusted for the lights dimming switch to the farthest position?

Did you close all the doors including a hatch so that they latch?

Check the door’s unlock switch to make sure it is off.

Missing interior light off button

Further troubleshooting

If the interior lights won’t turn off will it drain my battery?

If the interior lights are left on for an extended period it will drain your car’s battery. Luckily, a jump start will help your battery spring back to life quickly!

Aren’t the lights supposed to turn off automatically?

If your automated lights aren’t turning off, consider the methods listed above. Try disconnecting the battery and unplug the dome box circuit. It’s frequently under the dash, just next to the glove box, or on the engine compartment at times. The dome lights will be disconnected if the lights are removed.

Conclusion

If your car’s dome lights don’t turn off, it’s most likely due to one of the problems listed above. Most of the time, the issue arises when someone else utilizes the interior lights & leaves the buttons in a state you don’t typically leave it in, or there is a flaw that requires a thorough examination.

To address your problem, you’ll have to experiment with different button combinations depending on the model and electrical arrangement. The dimmer is our case’s button and rotating it in several directions but never force it if it doesn’t want to move.

At some time or another, you are bound to have an issue with your car’s light system. You can check some of our other blog posts for other auto-related issues.

Common Repairs & How Long They Take

Most companies will use specialized software that gives them an estimated labor repair time. This takes into consideration such things as:

Year, make, and model of vehicle

Mileage

Intricacy of the repair

Below are 10 of the most common repairs.

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

Replace ignition coil. This replacement can take between 30 minutes and 2 hours depending on what type of coil it is and whether a distributor has the coil in stock (particularly for an older car).

[/su_panel]

[su_panel background=”#ffff” shadow=”2px 2px 2px #eeeeee” radius=”4″]

Replace the oxygen sensor. This service should take between 1 and 3 hours. Get this repair done if your vehicles shuts down when idling or shows p0031 or P0037 codes.

Replace catalytic converter. The amount of time this will take is about 3 hours, However, it may take over a day in the shop because the elements get hot. This means that it will have to cool down in between tests.

A good muffler shop can replace these in 30 minutes!

How Repairs Can Compound and Take Longer

You may know that it only takes 2 hours to complete a repair. So, why is it that the auto shop is taking too long to give you your car back?

There are a few reasons.

Unforeseen repairs may have come up during the original repair.

Some parts will have to be ordered. Not all parts are easy to order – and the older your car, the longer it may take.

Your car may be one of many vehicles that are being serviced inside of the shop.

Your car is only worked on during operating hours.

The repair shop has limited equipment.

When additional repairs are needed, they require your signature.

Ways to Get Faster Car Repairs

No one likes to wait for the repair shop… To ease this pain, you may be able to ask for a rental or loaner.

Ask how long they estimate that the repair will take

Find out if they have all of the necessary parts in place

Look to see if the mechanic doing the work is an ASE-certified professional

Get a signed estimate of the work (complete with the estimated labor hours)

Check in every few days to find out how the repair is going

Get quotes from a few mechanics/dealerships before you agree to a repair at any particular place

Pro tip: Document every conversation that you have so that you have a paper trail of what’s going on.

Express Services

Most dealerships have “express” services that are performed. Most of these are preventative maintenance tasks that can keep your car in premium running condition.

Common express services:

Oil change

Brake pad replacement

Tire rotation and balancing

Transmission flush

Air filter replacement

Many places will allow you to make an appointment for the service. These services are aimed at preventative maintenance and shouldn’t take more than an hour.

Mechanics vs. Dealerships

How long can a mechanic keep my car? How long can a dealership hold my car? These are questions you might be asking yourself.

Insurance and warranty claims generally require your car to be fixed within 15 to 20 days.

What is the Lemon Law?

The Lemon Law is a way to protect consumers like you in the event that you purchase a defective vehicle.

Let’s say you buy a car. A few months later, there’s a problem with the transmission. You pay the repair costs and it works for a few more months. Then, there’s another problem with the transmission. It may not have anything to do with the mechanic or your dumb luck. Your car may actually be a lemon.

If there have been 30 days of cumulative repairs, you have the right to ask for your vehicle back. If the manufacturer (or a trained professional) cannot repair your vehicle within 30 days, it’s assumed that the defect is substantial.

This is when you’ll want to look into the lemon laws of your state. If your car is classified as a lemon, you may be eligible to get a vehicle replacement or even reimbursement/compensation for free. Contact your local DMV office or a lawyer.

Only a few states have used car lemon laws while all 50 states have new car lemon laws.

Common questions and answer

It can be frustrating when your car is taking longer to get repaired than you had originally figured.

What is the average time for a car repair?

Car repairs, on average, take approximately 12 days. This means that the car is in the shop for that long, not that a mechanic is working on it cumulatively for this long. This estimate is also based on there being both body and mechanical damage.

What happens if a mechanic or dealership misquotes a repair time for cars?

Typically, the mechanic will call you to tell you why the repair is taking longer. At that point, there may be a revised repair list and estimate.

When is a car repair no longer worth it?

You will want to look at the value of your car and the total cost of the repairs. If the repairs are $4,000 and the car is only valued at $3,000, it may be time to cut your losses.

What is a mechanic’s lien?

A mechanic’s lien is a lien that is filed by your mechanic to seek the additional money owed on the repair. You will have likely signed a document to agree to certain costs. Once the vehicle is done, you owe that money.

If your car is vibrating when you drive, is tough to steer, or feels like it might roll over in turns, it may be time to check the sway bar end links, aka stabilizer links. These links serve as the sway bar’s connection to the rest of the suspension and are crucial for maintaining your car’s stability while driving. They unfortunately don’t last forever.

Close up sway bar end links on a 2013 Kia Optima

What are sway bar end links?

Sway bar end links enhance handling by minimizing body roll in your car. This gives a much smoother ride and extends the life of tires by reducing early wear. They connect to the sway bar.

The sway bar (aka Anti Roll Bar or Stabilizer Bar… they’re the same thing), which offers stability, is connected to the suspension on either side of the car by sway bar end links. This bar spans the front end slightly in front of the tires. End links connect the sway bar to the outer suspension at the wheel on each side.

Although the sway bars are made of steel, the end links have rubber bushings that can wear out over time. When driving in turns and curves, these bushings offer stable, smooth handling and prevent excessive body roll.

How long do they last?

The typical driver can expect to get at least 50,000 miles out of sway bar end links and bushings. Original parts from the manufacturer should last at least 50,000 miles, and quality replacements should last about the same amount of time.

Expect to replace these parts more frequently if the car is driven in challenging conditions, off-road, or in high-performance driving scenarios like track nights or races. Off-roading and high-performance driving may require these parts to be checked after every event and replaced several times a year.

3 Most Common Symptoms of Bad Sway Bar Links

1. Clunks or squeaks

Usually heard coming from the front suspension when driving, especially when turning. This is the first indications of damaged sway bar links. Sounds can be heard easier by someone outside the vehicle, but if the vehicle is driven with the window down slowly, it is possible to hear them while driving.

We recommend replacing them at this stage!

2. Over-steering or excessive leaning

As the links weaken, the next symptom would be felt during turns.

3. Extreme leaning in turns, body roll, and wallowing

If a sway bar link is completely broken, this is what you’ll notice. Complete failure could result in the vehicle rolling over in turns.

What causes them to go bad?

There are several causes for bad end links on sway bars.

Simple wear and tear is one frequent cause.

High miles

Poor road quality

General suspension wear

A lack of lubrication from failing bushings over time can eventually cause breakage.

Road debris damage.

Hitting a curb or a pothole. In

Winter driving conditions can also cause sway bar links to break faster, and salt and chemicals used to melt ice can cause rubber suspension bushings to break before they should.

Pro tip: Many after-market parts have a Zerk fitting that you can grease. Grease them up a couple times a year, or every other oil change with some high temp grease.

Can you drive with a broken sway bar link?

Driving with a broken end link is not recommended. If the link is broken or damaged, it can lead to a number of issues, including instability, vibration, uneven tire wear, and, in some cases, a rollover of the vehicle.

In emergency turns, a broken sway bar end linkage can allow the vehicle to roll over. While a car with a broken sway bar end linkage may be able to be driven carefully to the shop, it would be safer to have the vehicle towed into the shop.

Get your car’s sway bar end links inspected as soon as possible if they may be broken or damaged.

How to check sway bar links

Here’s a worn sway bar end link compared with new links – Image source, Dave_7

Sway bar links on your car can be checked in a few different ways.

One way is to simply crawl under the vehicle and inspect them visually and physically.

The links need to be replaced if you notice any damage, such as bends, cracks, or breaks. If the rubber bushings are damaged, the lubricant can leak out and no longer keep the sway bar end linkages from getting stuck. This damage is not an emergency, but it will cause the sway bar end linkages to wear faster and does require attention.

Inspecting with a jack or lift

To check the links another way, jack up the car and look at them with it in the air. With the car elevated, you’ll have a better chance of spotting any damage to the sway bar links. If you notice any bends, cracks, or breaks, the links are probably damaged and need to be replaced. You can also rotate the wheels while the car is in the air to check for excessive play in the sway bar links and bushings.

Viewing the tires while the vehicle is still in the air can help diagnose bad sway bar end linkages. The sway bar end linkages are responsible for the tire camber, or the inward and outward tilt of your tire. If the sway bar linkages are worn or failing, the tire may tilt in or out. Watching the wheel spin from the front of the vehicle while it is in the air can also show the camber of the tire.

Tire camber issues can cause inappropriate tire wear. Checking the wear on the inside and outside corners of the tire will also show if the tire camber is incorrect.

Be sure to check your other suspension components such as the control arm, look for bad cv joints, worn ball joints, old tie rods, etc

If your tire camber is slanted positive or negative, you should check your end links

Can a bad sway bar link cause vibration?

Yes, bad sway bar linkages can cause vibration and shudder in curves and turns.

The sway bar linkages are in charge of keeping the car stable and moving weight around corners. If they break, the whole car will shake or sag to one side when turning. Failure of the sway bar end linkage will result in a vibration of the car’s body rather than a vibration of the steering wheel. Steering wheel vibrations are usually caused by other factors in the suspension system.

Effects of over-tightening a sway bar link

If you over-tighten your car’s sway bar end links, it can cause a number of problems. The links can become damaged or broken. It is important to use a torque wrench and tighten it to your car’s specifications.

What happens if a sway bar link breaks?

There will be an immediate change in the handling of the vehicle. The steering will feel very soft and lean significantly around corners. Unlike other suspension failures, a sway bar linkage failure won’t cause anything to fall under the vehicle since the sway bars are supported by other parts of the suspension.

Are sway bar linkages a DIY project?

With access to a lift and a torque wrench, sway bar end linkages can easily be replaced by most DIY mechanics. They do require certain torque settings, but with the correct tools, they can be replaced in an afternoon.

How can I prolong the life of my sway bar end linkages?

There are several ways to prolong the life of sway bar end linkages. Using quality parts or OEM parts will make the sway bar end linkages last longer. Being aware of road hazards like potholes and curbs will prevent damage to the sway bar end linkages. When the vehicle is exposed to salt and de-icing chemicals, an underbody wash to remove these will also prolong the lifespan as well.
