The ONLU rooftop cargo carrier has a soft-shell design with water resistant zippers and Velcro covers to insulate your cargo. It’s a great size — small enough to easily fit on your roof, but big enough to fit all your cargo. At 20 cubic feet, you’ll be able to fit everything you need, even for the longest of road trips. I tested one out on a 2014 Kia Soul, and it did not drape over the sides or front of the car. If you have a very small car, such as a Ford Fiesta, Mitsubishi Mirage, or Mini Cooper, you may want to measure your roof to make sure this cargo carrier will fit. It will take up about 55″ x 38″ when fully packed.

One thing I noticed right out of the box was how sturdy the material of the cargo carrier seemed. I only used it for one trip, but it seems strong enough to last many hundreds or even thousands of miles. The zipper was a little tough to use, but that is probably just because of how heavy duty it is. The manufacturers say it is completely waterproof! Also included was an anti-slip mat to help keep the cargo carrier in place on your roof. This is a plus, and it might even help prevent your roof from getting scratched.

Installation

The instructions included with the cargo carrier are very easy to follow with pictures that are very illuminating. It only took me about 15 minutes to get everything out of the box and installed on top of my 2014 Kia Soul. I was able to do it without any help from others and without any tools.

Since this car doesn’t have cross bars, I used the car clips to attach the cargo carrier to my roof. The car clips work by attaching to the weather stripping on your doorframe. It might take a little fiddling with it to find where the clips lock into, but I once I hooked them in correctly, the clips latched on tight and did not move. I was easily able to shut my car door even with the clips attached, and I had no trouble with the clips coming loose when I opened my doors after getting everything installed.

On the Road

Once I had everything installed, I took my car for a spin. As the instructions suggested, I started driving at relatively low speeds, and I stopped after about five miles to make sure everything was still attached properly. I noticed that the cargo carrier shifted backward a little, but the straps were still all tight and everything seemed to be in place. With everything looking good, I headed for the freeway.

At about 70 miles per hour, the front of the cargo carrier did start to flap in the wind just a bit. The straps attach about a foot back from the very front of the carrier, so this part is not held down to the car on its own. Whether or not this will be a major issue for you depends on the cargo you’re loading it with. In my test, the cargo carrier was only about half full. It works best when it’s completely full, and especially when the heaviest items are at the front of the vehicle. That will prevent it from shifting at high speeds.

Another thing to note is that, because the straps go through your door, the rubber seals around your doors may not be able to completely close. This makes for a bit louder of a drive. Again, this is most noticeable at higher speeds, and it’s not a major issue — just something worth noting.

Storage

When you’re finished with your trip, the ONLU cargo carrier folds down for easy storage. Removing the straps from your car is even easier than putting them on, and the cargo carrier fits back in the bag it ships in, ready for your next adventure. Once you have all your cargo out, you should be able to get the whole thing put away in about ten minutes.

Price and Warranty

This cargo carrier is a great value at less than $70 at the time of this review. To put that in context, rooftop cargo carriers from some of the big brands can go for over $500! That alone makes the ONLU rooftop cargo carrier worth a close look. Fortunately, the high-quality materials mean this cargo carrier feels nearly as premium as the most expensive options out there. Plus, the manufacturers are offering a two-year warranty, so if anything happens down the road, they should be able to help you out.

The Constant Velocity Joints are actually just one component of the CV Axle Assembly but generally when someone refers to the CV Joint they’re talking about the whole assembly so we’ll break down the whole kit and kaboodle.

CV stands for Continuous Velocity meaning the input speed of the axle shaft will always be equal to the output speed of the wheel hub assembly no matter what angle the joint is at. This ensures that the drive wheels will always spin at a consistent speed whether they are pivoting left or right to steer or moving up and down with the suspension system.

The Anatomy of a Constant Velocity Joint:

A CV Axle Assembly is made up of 4 main parts

1. The Inner CV Joint – This is usually a Tripod style CV Joint
2. The Outer CV Joint – This is typically a Ball style CV Joint

The ball bearings move inside of machined channels cut into the inside wall of the joint housing and this is usually where you’ll find the most wear with these bearings.

Drivetrain differences

FWD

The CV Axles connect the transaxle to the wheels to drive the car. Most front wheel drive cars have a transverse mounted engine and use a mechanism called a transaxle (basically it’s a differential shoved inside of the transmission) to transfer power from the transmission to the rims via the CV.

RWD

Rear drive cars are a little different in that the motor is mounted longitudinally (inline with the car) along with the transmission. The power from the engine is then sent through the transmission and subsequently through the drive shaft and into the rear differential which then splits that power to the rear wheels via the CV Axles to propel the vehicle.

AWD

All wheel drive vehicles typically utilize a transaxle in the front to power the front wheels but also send an output shaft to the rear of the vehicle to a rear differential and CV Axles to power the rear simultaneously.

4WD

A 4WD vehicle will usually only have CV joints in the front, but a solid axle in the rear.

Most 1/2 ton and light duty pickup trucks these days utilize Independent Front Suspension systems rather than a solid front axle due to the more comfortable ride quality. Thus the need for CV Axles to power the front tires while in 4 wheel drive. They send power to the front through a transfer case (mounted behind the transmission) and subsequently to the front differential via the front drive shaft and then the CV’s.

Can a bad CV Joint Affect the Transmission?

It can! In some circumstances….

When a CV Joint wears out, a common symptom is vibration and even shaking felt through the steering wheel. If left unnoticed or simply neglected and ignored for long enough this shaking can cause the seal where the inner CV Joint meets the transaxle to fail and leak transmission fluid. And though a worn CV Joint may not seem like a critical repair to make right away, a transmission without fluid will fail and is a much costlier repair than the CV Joints.

So if you notice grease around the boots or near the axle-area, it might be worth jacking the car up and taking a closure look!

How to check if your CV Joints are worn out and need to be replaced

Vibration

The first and usually the most obvious symptoms that it’s time to replace your CV’s is when you feel a shaking or vibration upon acceleration, however this can be caused by other factors other than the CV Axles.

Clicking

Something else to listen for is if you hear a clicking noise coming from the front end. It may be hard to pinpoint during normal driving but an easy way to check is to drive in circles (preferably in an empty parking lot and not on the road) with the steering wheel at full lock. If your CV Joints are beginning to show excessive wear you will hear a consistent clicking noise as you drive. If the wear is excessive it could turn into a squeak or squeal.

Boot failure

A visual indicator that it’s time to replace your CV Joints will be a torn or missing rubber CV Joint boot. Once the boot is compromised the joint may collect dust or debris which will cause premature wear. Often when a boot gets torn it will fling grease into the wheel well so keep an eye out for that as well. A lack of grease means the joint may not be properly lubricated and will lead to failure.

IMPORTANT

As always, if you are not highly confident in your mechanical abilities, please do not attempt to repair your cv joint yourself (or hire Joe-Shmo down the road who said he’d do it for $40 and some beer). Performing these repairs incorrectly could cause serious damage to your vehicle and worse put yourself and others on the road at risk. The other day I took my family to the drive-in movie theater to watch the new Avatar: Way of Water. (yes there are still around 300 drive-in theaters in America!).

As we’re sitting waiting for the show to start, the kids were coming and going… you know, they had to get their popcorn, refill soda, use the restroom, etc… Every time someone opened the car door, it turned on the dome lights and our car shone like a lone Christmas tree in a forest. Very bright. It got me thinking, “I wonder if I can turn off my lights with the door still open.” I learn the answer will be very vehicle specific. However, here are nine tips:

1. Wait 2 minutes

Many vehicles have an auto-off feature to avoid draining the battery. So you could try shutting off your car, removing keys from ignition, turning off the exterior lights, and waiting a couple minutes to see if they automatically shut off. Be careful if the lights stay on a while ( 30 minutes+) as it could drain the battery.

2. Join a Forum

Chances are, others have had the same question as you. Since this question will vary between brands and models, check out forums dedicated to your ride. For example, check the Ford forums or Toyota forums and ask around.

You will probably have to join the forum to ask a question. Be sure to do a thorough search to check and see if anyone has already asked the question and it has been answered.

A member is also likely to offer an idea you may not have thought of and even a trick or two to make the process easier. Before you ask questions locate the forum menu.

There are lots of questions posted so be sure to read through them you could find a related problem or more than one way to fix the problem.

3. Google Search

That’s right. A classic Google query may be all you need. Do a search and see what you can locate about interior map/dome lights and how to turn them off when the door is open.

4. Unplug the battery or pull the fuse

A surefire way to turn the lights off when your doors are open is the pull the ‘light module’ fuse, or disconnect the battery. When disconnecting battery, remove BLACK/ground cables first, then RED/hot cables second.

Pulling a fuse is easy. Just make sure you find the one for your car. Some fuse boxes will have them all marked, otherwise you’ll need to Google it, or dig through the owner’s manual.

If you don’t wanna fuss around with fuses, disconnecting the negative battery cable will shut off all lights in the car. Some downsides to this would be that it could reset your stereo settings, and you’ll have to reconnect the wires when it’s time to leave.

What causes the lights to remain on after the automobile has been switched off?

If it takes so long for the headlights to switch off, it is quite probable that there is a problem with the body control module. This is a typical failure mode for this particular kind of car a Ford 2010, 2011, or 2013.

It could be that the mechanism used was the same for all models. This is why the interior lights can’t be turned off while the doors are open and must be done manually.

What is a body control module?

The car’s Body Control Module to connects with the various (ECUs) Electronic Control Units in the vehicle.

If a dome light would not turn off, it is likely that the switch has been stuck in the “On” position. Often times the interior light, door, the hatch is open and hasn’t had the latch put on this will keep the car lights on when the doors are open.

To prevent this issue, you could shut the door, push it to make sure you hear the latch sound.

If this does not work for you try looking at the computer systems menu and see if you need to download an app or possibly find the location of a bad wire, fuse, and make sure the battery is not being drained.

If the interior lights stay on check the fuse, battery, hatch is closed, door is shut, give the door a pull and push to make sure it is close, you can also check the bulbs and fuses to make sure they have not blown.

Check the menu to make sure all the interior light bulb switches are in the correct position. If they are not the lights need to be checked manually.

Shut off Interior Lights

When you want to turn the lights off use the switch, make sure all doors are closed. If you want the lights to stay off when the door is open you can remove the fuse, bulbs, make sure the ear light are turned off again all great ways to keep your battery charging.

How to locate off equipment?

The location of the mechanism can sometimes seem like a trick to locate. Most times when you open the car door the interior lights come on without a key in the ignition. Look around the steering wheel or dash. Below is a photo from an old Dodge Ram pickup truck. See how it’s a simple “OFF” dial?

How to Turn off lights in most cars

This article will give you tips on turn off the outside lights in your car, especially without draining your car battery. If necessary you may need to take your vehicle to a mechanic if you can’t shut them off yourself.

Not only is it inconvenient, but it may also be a severe safety hazard if your interior lights stop working.  However, while there is no one reason why the cabin lights might fail at any particular time, you could use the process of elimination to reveal the possible causes and limit the amount of guesswork you have to do on your end.

Turn off headlights when car is running

Look for a extended knob coming out of the steering wheel column on either the right or the left side. It should have a symbol that looks like a light with a line through it. Some will simply say ‘Off’ as you can see in the photo below on a Kia Optima.

Finding the Headlight Switch

Find the controls for the headlights. Although headlight switch are not found in the same position in every car, there are a few frequent locations. How To Turn Off Daytime Running Lights

Many automobiles now include daytime running lights (or DRL) that turn on automatically when the vehicle is turned on but the headlights are turned off. If your headlights appear to be turned off but there are lights glowing from the front of your car, they are most likely daytime running lights.

When you switch off your automobile, always ensure sure the headlights are turned off. Leaving the headlights on while the car is turned off can drain the battery, and if the battery is completely depleted, the car will not start. If you neglect and totally deplete the battery, you’ll have to jump-start your car to get it back on the road.

Change the symbol on the switch to the proper one. Rotate the control dial between your thumb and index finger until the desired setting is reached. The different settings are marked by different symbols, and when the dial travels through each position, you should feel it “click” into place.

How to turn Off Parking Lights

On most automobiles, the parking lights are the first setting. On the front of the car, these lights are orange, and on the back, they are red.

The next setting is commonly “low beam” or “dipped beam.” These headlights give forward and lateral illumination while reducing glare, thus they should be used on congested routes when other cars are fewer than 65 yards ahead of you.

This dial may also have the “fog lights” function, although other automobile manufacturers place the fog light control on a separate button adjacent to the conventional headlight settings. • Soft white/yellow: This is one of the yellowest of the lights and is similar to the lighting you would find on a nightstand or in a den. It’s rated near the 3k range.
• Colored: Some LED lights can be controlled with your app. With the swipe of a finger, you can change from white to red to green, and any other color on the spectrum.

Often, it’s a matter of preference. If you’re using the map lighting to do a lot of reading, whether it’s a magazine or a map, choose the light that is comfortable for your eyes. Yellow will give you the iridescent traditional halogen light look, and are often dimmer. Colored lights also are dimmer, so you’d want to find a higher wattage than usual. The 5k is a great color for brightness and clarity. This is a “pure white” that makes it easy to see in the dark.

You may even want to have a few bulb colors in your glove compartment. Based on what you will use the light for, you can choose the appropriate color.
